Review: A Nookie album on Metalheadz... Surely the D&B game is now complete? That's it. This is the moment we've been waiting for, right? It's certainly been worth the wait either way as the renowned and hugely respected artists flexes some of his most timeless and definitive material ever right here. From the sci-fi jazz of 'Future Forever' to the series of soulful reflective cuts written with Ruth Royall to the occasional house flavours like 'In Love' this is the sound of one of the most musical and soulful men in jungle drum & bass with nothing to prove but plenty to share. Unbelievably stunning and essential.
Review: What a treat we have here... Paul Terzulli's info-packed book about drum & bass roots Who Say Reload now enjoys a sonic representation as many of the seminal classics celebrated in the book have been compiled for this album. From 'Valley Of The Shadows' to 'Renegade Snares' to '6 Million Ways', Who Say Reload's historical exploration is captured perfectly with some of the most important, game-changing and influential tracks of the 90s. Joining the dots from the music's junglistic roots to its current position as one of the most vital and thriving global rave movements expect stone cold classics from the likes of Nookie, Optical, Jonny L, Wax Doctor, Zinc (as Dopeskillz) and Andy C's earliest incarnation as one half of Origin Unknown. Reload!
Review: You can tell the age of a horse by counting its teeth, the age of a tree by counting its rings, and the age of a dance music reviewer by counting how many 'Cafe Del Mar' comps are stored away in his/her/their memory banks! That sadly makes this writer about 250 years old, but thankfully the series has recently hit a serious run of form and this latest volume is a delight from start to finish, kicking off as it does in dubwise territory before veering briefly into lo-fi hip-hop and then bringing the classic-style Balearic vibes. With detours into fluffy pop, pointless ambience or self-indulgent neo-classicism conspicuous by their absence, it's everything that's good about the Ibiza sundown experience distilled into two hours of chilled listening pleasure.
Review: What a monsterous collection of creations we have here as we explore the full range of breakbeat influences, from slower, more clunky original creations, to garage inspired rollers and everything in-between. The sheer mass of this collection is one of it's immediate charms as we are gifted over 50 originals and remixes, each one bringing something unique to the table from a supporting cast including the likes of Origin8a & Propa, Benton, MKII, Deekline, Samurai Breaks and more. The constant changes of direction and expansionary sense of sonic inclusion are both big yesses from us, with our favourites including 9Trane's nostalgic bubbler 'Thuggish', next to the housey piano drives of Herve's 'Live Together' and the old school garage flavour of Matt Jam Lamont, Echelon & Tuff Culture, who join focus for 'Massive & Crew'. Tidy work indeed!
Review: From the vaults of Reinforced Records come 11 full-on party bangers from rave and hardcore original Manix. The Manix combination of uplifting piano anthems, hard hitting breakbeats and hardcore synths was a winning formula for Reinforced from 1991 to 1995, and influenced numerous producers to get in on that dangerous combination of high-life vocals and dangerous beats. This remix album is a collection of remixes by Manix for artists from the Reinforced roster including Nookie, Tek 9, One II One and Delirium. A huge release for fans of rave, breaks and drum & bass fans, it's a history lesson and a fresh take on the modern influx of retro sounds all at the same time. Sorted.
