Review: Maceo Plex's Ellum label has showcased some of underground house and techno's most respected names in recent years - and this compilation is no exception. Italian house legend Dino Lenny delivers a wonderfully evocative, bass-heavy cut on "Let Me In", while Fedele from Agents of Time flies solo for the twitchy, electronic groove of "Riot Disco" and Christian Nielsen follows a similar path for "Glitch Itch". Meanwhile, North Lake, who released on the label back in 2017, goes deeper for the dubbed out "Imperial Heights", and Borne Aloft delves into bleep-heavy space techno on the tracky but discordant sounding "Primal Urge".

Review: Michigan-based North lake, AKA producer Isaac Delongchamp, has previously impressed with 12" singles that effortlessly join the dots between woozy acid house, alien techno and murky, off-kilter deep house. Here he continues the trend with a pleasingly varied, electronic and analogue-sounding four-tracker for Permanent Vacation. There's much to admire, from the ambient period Aphex Twin melodies and hypnotic rhythms of "Isoteric", to the skittering 808 electro-meets-dub house wooziness of "Prism". Arguably best of all, though, is "Mobius Tapes", a shuffling fusion of tumbling melodies, bulging electronic sub bass and a fine, techno-influenced deep house groove.

Review: Isaac Delongchamp's last North Lake outing on Phonica five years was rather good, so hopes are naturally high for this belated follow-up. He begins in suitably subdued mode on the deep and dreamy "Hearing Voices", where twinkling music box style melodies relax over dusty drums and a chunky bassline reminiscent of the early Chicago house greats. Having shaken out his limbs, Delongchamp opts for more rubbery drums and elastic boogie bass on the similarly deep and picturesque "Vibing To Your Ride", before doffing a cap to the restless electronic hypnotism of German deep house on "Magic Ride". Perhaps best of all, though, is closing cut "Teenage Heartbreak", whose lilting, alien-sounding synth lines attractively wrap around a shuffling but energy-packed deep house rhythm.

Review: US producer Isaac Delongchamp returns to Berlin label Sweatshop with this excellent, unusual techno record. The title track is remixed here by Markus Suckut, who turns it into a dubby, bleepy groove, plated in steely, stinging percussion. It could have sounded like so many other records, but Suckut's deft touch ensures it has a real individuality. "Scorn" is a tough percussive banger, but Delongchamp uses a stepping rhythm to set it apart, while "Panopticon" is an eerie, stripped back affair, with cymbals crashing in over an insistent pulse. Finally, "Tell Em Deeon" features a distorted rhythm and horror-style rave samples, the final chapter in an unusual but exemplary release.

Review: In line with the ever present allure of coldwave synths and soundtrack sensibilities in house music, Phonica serve up this colourful trio of jams from emergent Michigan producer North Lake. Following on from appearances on Sweatshop and Resista, here Isaac Delongchamp gets to further demonstrate his gift for warm synths and intricate melodies over the simplest of grooves. "Marlborol Noir" is all fuzzy basslines and haunting leads, while "Suomi Kutsusu" is of a much sunnier disposition with its open-topped chords and nagging open hats. "Moonwalker" veers towards electro territory with its illustrious arpeggios and uptempo strut rounding off a rich and varied EP of up-to-the-minute synth house.
