Review: There was a time when Balearic meant "play what you want, as long as it makes people dance"; then, somewhere along the way, we fell into a bit of a rut and it came to mean "lots of achingly lovely soundscapes replete with fey, wispy female vocals, wave sounds and fluttering flamenco guitar". This collection from Rare Wiri, then - ranging as it does from Jerome La Souris' disco-fied take on MAW classic 'To Be In Love' to the proggy throb of Cuz Electric's 'Polly', and from the nu-boogie strut of Sauco's 'Get Off' to Rayko's 'Drive', which comes on like coldwave meets yacht rock - is a good chance to remind ourselves of what 'Balearic' was originally meant to be about!
Review: Hearty congratulations to Rayko, whose Rare Wiri label has just turned ten. To celebrate the label's decade in dance, the Spanish producer has put together this fittingly fine collection of archive cuts. It features no re-edits, just original tracks and associated remixes. There's plenty to set the pulse racing throughout, from the Clavinet-sporting crunchiness of Limpdisco's compilation-opening "Moving To '70s" and Spiritcatcher's D-Train style NYC boogie revision of Julian Sanza's "Can't Stop The Feeling", to the jazz funk-flecked deep house/disco fusion of Nowsense's "Smile" and Situation's wonderfully atmospheric electro-acid revision of James Rod's "Disco Rocket". Naturally, there are plenty of Rayko tracks and remixes dotted throughout, including a wonderfully spacey and bass-heavy take on Ilya Santana's "Electrik Mind".
Review: We live in chaotic times but mercifully this brand new Russian quartet are here to help us make sense of things. And they're doing it with a vibrant soulful house jam that wouldn't go amiss in the sets of everyone from Krivit to Kevorkian. Feel good, funking and full of summer vibes, it's heightened by a cosmic remix from James Rod and a heavily swung kick-loaded twist from fellow countryman and serial editor Valique. Time to "Smile".
