Review: Initially a party organisation from Belgium, De:tuned has become a record label for reanimating the sounds from electronic music's early days. Run by Ruben Boons and Bert Hermans, it continues with the cherry-picked selections for its 10th anniversary with volume 5 in the celebratory series. Terrace (aka Stefan Robbers) and Nu Era (aka Marc Mac, best known as a founding member of 4 Hero) channel the timeless spirit of Detroit styled hi-tech soul and Jupiter jazz with their stellar contributions. While electro is the order of the day elsewhere, courtesy of legend Carl Finlow on the dystopian electro bass of "Photo Array" and new school heroes London Modular Alliance going further into dystopian and sci-fi aesthetics on the powerful "D6".

Review: We are always excited to hear from the Four40 imprint as they continuously push creative new avenues of bass music. For this one they team up with Nu Era for a dark and dangerous expedition into dancehall alongside RTKAL. To start, Nu Era supplies the perfect backing, complete with dark, growling bass sounds, triplet drum patterns and rolling subs. From here RTKAL lays down some serious vocal heat, with his deep vocal presence piercing through the mix in the all the right places.

Review: It's been 14 years since Marc Clair aka Nu Era released new material, but as Geometricks shows, he hasn't lost his magic, Detroit-influenced touch. "Space Above Us" sets the tone with wonderful, warbling melodies, liquid acid bass and stirring strings all unravelling over a jerky, wiry rhythm. One simply doesn't hear this kind of uplifting, atmospheric techno these days. On "Lines Between Us", Clair delivers a warm bass and breezy synths, "Octahedron" revolves around a similarly lush combination - albeit with strings replacing then synths - while "Heartstrings" features crisp drums, soulful piano keys and soaring woodwind. It's the most musical piece on the release and proves that Clair is a true master of his craft.

Review: Most box-set releases tend to focus on reissues and re-releases, but on Brainbox De:tuned opts for a different approach. The compilation features artists who defined European techno and electronica's golden age during the 90s, but the Belgian label has commissioned new or unreleased material from these acts. Fans of that era will be thrilled by B12's moody electro, the raw, analogue warmth of John Beltran's "Nineteen Eighty Nine" and the resonating bass-y techno of In:Sync's "Crack in the World". While not every track impresses - Move D's contribution sounds tepid - there are enough jaw-dropping piece of music on this compilation, witness the autumnal majesty of as One's "Where Did He Go & Why" to make Brainbox an essential release.

Review: What will first contact with aliens be like? Will they welcome a sincere exchange of values and information? Will they enslave our souls? Will they turn out to be mankind's greatest allies in much darker intergalactic future? Longstanding Four40 doublet Nu Era don't have the answers... But they're happy to soundtrack our pontifications with gutter-chomping 4x4 bass-bitten house. And whether the dagger-edged low end of the title track woos the greys, the funkular groove of "Already Dead" sends them packing or the croaky, humanised robotica of "No God Here" foretells a bleak battle only sci-fi novelists and hippies could possibly imagine, the messages are clear: Aliens are inevitable and Nu Era make damn fine club music.

Review: Nu Era are a duo from the West Midlands intent on toppling Bristol's bas crown by championed in a 'new era' of bass music. So far they've been doing a good job about it, particularly with their jams on Four40. "Under My Skin" sees them reunited with the label, bring fire over the course of three new tracks. The title track opens the EP with some minimal 4 x 4 action, whilst "Rush" brings the ghetto bounce to the party and "Go" with its huge snare build ups and mercilessly low bottom end is a peak time monster if ever there was one.

Review: Northern darkstepper Kilner steps up to curate the second Four40 compendium, and he's looted the most exclusive of vaults to create a collection that's wholly unique to him. Tightly sprung in unreleased cuts and dubs, it's sharp-tailored document of where 130 bass music is at in the UK right now. From the lean groaning two-step shuffles of Hybrid Theory's "Tempering" via the warehouse-battering tubular bass and twisted vocal flexes of Adjected Deleted & Scullious's "Enemy" via the murderous grumblings and bounce-bass badness of Fogg & The Bumpy Fool, Kilner's so on point right now he sleeps on a bed of nails. Sharp.

Review: Birmingham's Four40 have done it again. This time however, it's a compilation affair, featuring their most interesting artists. As per usual, the sounds are sparse and varied, held together only by their potent low-ends which really burst through on proper systems. Juno favourites Cloaka and Killjoy make an appearance, but there's plenty of quality from all corners of the throng. Suck Fake's "Dumbell" is particularly gnarly but the whole lot is bound to cause quite the stir in the old dancehall. It's a UK ting...

Review: With their influences ranging from chart-baiting house music to skippy garage and deeper moods, Nu Era stride forth on their debut single for Four40 as representatives of the West Midlands scene. "Give It All" screams crossover appeal with its canny mix of vocals, strings and chords precision placed for maximum ear-worming, while the "Bass Mix" brings a much ruder underground twist on the track. "Came Into My Life" rides a more electro influenced beat but keeps the cheerful melodic elements and chipmunk vocal slices present and correct, leaving it to "Source" to bring a techno edge to proceedings with its nasty synth line and strict 4/4 jack.

Review: We don't know much about Nu Era but their beats and low-end for Four40 sure do sound bumping - "Just As Long" is a sweeter-than-sweet garage number that's reminiscent of Joy Orbison's housier work. "With Me" is denser and more broken up, with an artillery of dicing percussion and a poignant swell of robust basslines emanating from all angles, whereas "Carelessness" drops another hefty garage package with a fine rotation of female vocals on the loop. Class.
