Review: Octave One is one of techno's longest-running projects, with the Burden brothers releasing peerless records for over 30 years. Following on from their recent revival of the soulful Never on Sunday side project, the Burdens now turn their attention to what they are best known for - crafting lean, percussive rhythms. "The Blue Drift" marks the tougher end of their sound, with a bruising bass and tough kicks underpinning a series of outer space bleeps. On "It Just Is", the sound isn't as visceral, but the rolling rhythm, coupled with spaced out synths, shows that the Detroit act remain a force to be reckoned with.

Review: The third instalment in the Locus Of Control series sees the Burden brothers do what they exceled at for the past 30 years - namely crafting lean and hypnotic dance floor techno. "Shameless" is a driving track that centres on tight percussion and a moody bass. Coupled with mysterious synths, it sees Octave One veer into the realms of Drexciyan mysticism. The legacy of the Burdens' hometown is also writ large on "School Of Seven Bells": powered by a dense, layered bass and featuring acrid 303s, it exudes the kind of understated menace that only Suburban Knight's nocturnal techno is capable of conjuring up.

Review: The Burden brothers' Never On Sunday side project yielded two fine Eps during the early 90s and now 30 years on, the 430 West owners revive it with "The Bearer". In keeping with Never On Sunday's previous output, it doesn't have the lean, linear dynamism of Octave One work but it does create an intense sound of its own thanks to its moody, cinematic textures and mid-tempo drums. The Burdens themselves elevate the dance floor element and Karina Mia's vocals on the Octave One version, while P41's remix resounds to rich chords. Meanwhile, Skream drops a peak time take, led by booming kicks and grinding riffs.

Review: As the title suggests, this expansive EP from the Burden Brothers' Octave One project delivers new remixes of two tracks from 2015 album Burn It Down. We're treated to a trio of reworks of stab-happy, retro-futurist house cut 'Believer', featuring the trademark vocals of long-time collaborator Ann Saunderson. There's an edit and extended version, both of which cannily combine their usual ear-pleasing Motor City electronics with Inner City style, warehouse-ready grooves, and an almost entirely instrumental dub mix that's arguably even more loved-up and glassy-eyed. There's a similarly old school feel to the outfit's 'ReWork' of 'Whatever She Wants' - think deliciously positive chords, chunky drums and smooth bass-while the accompanying 'ReDub' adds a little more bottom-end weight while retaining the track's undeniably saucer-eyed vibe.

Review: Originally released back in 1995, this is the first time that Richie Hawtin's selection for Mixmag has been available as separate digital tracks. None of the featured tracks have aged a day, with the Plus 8 boss navigating a path through underground house and techno. There's tripped out acid from Lausen and his own Plastikman and FUSE material sitting side by side with pioneering minimalism from DBX and G-Man and the hypnotic pulses of Teste's eternal "The Wipe". Mixmag Live! also reveals a deeper side to Hawtin's oeuvre, and the trio of dubbed out tracks that the mix ends on - from Paul Hannah, Sensorama and Roman Flugel's Roman IV project - is nothing short of stunning.

Review: The first instalment in this series saw Octave One explore a euphoric sound, and now the follow-up edition sees the Burden brothers venture down a darker path. "Afrotech" resounds to a throbbing, pulsating low-end that underpins a rolling, percussive rhythm. It makes for a menacing sound that is redolent of paranoid 430 West classics like The Existence of Echelon. "Detune" is much more dramatic and sees Octave One raise the tempo with a pulsating, menacing groove that veers into a visceral sound. While it will be more immediate for the festival crowds that they perform to, it still has their underground aesthetic at its heart.

Review: Motor City legends the Burden Brothers aka Octave One return on their esteemed 430 West label with more of their idiosyncratic blend of hi-tech soul on Locus Of Control Vol 1. Features the uplifting and emotive groove of "Lies In Truth" with its soaring melody, this is followed by the hard hitting dancefloor drama of "Injection" with its powerful string arrangements and driving bass supported by strict rhythms. Naturally, this is followed by a 'string free' version which lets that hypnotic melody take the centre stage allowing its magic to cast its spell on you.

Review: Over the years, Random Noise Generation was always Octave One's more electronic sounding project and on their latest release, this still proves to be the case. "N2 The Enfinate" sees the Burden brothers lay down a repetitive electronic riff over a snaking, pulsating rhythm. It's pared back and linear, but still contains enough of the Detroit act's soulful sensibility to set it apart. On "Rock My Soul (Reborn Mix)", they take a a look back to the early 90s, with soulful but slightly melancholic vocals supported by a stab-heavy house groove. Both tracks bode well for the Detroit act's forthcoming artist album, Endustry.

Review: Like us, you are probably excited yet confused at the same time upon seeing this - Random Noise Generation are Lenny and Lawrence Burden (with their brothers Lorne, Lynell and Lance as revolving members) who are indeed - Octave One! As far as we're concerned, the more of the Burden Brothers the better - these Motor City legends can do no wrong. Be assured that on "N2 The EnFinate" it is tough rolling acid techno that's emotive as much as it is full of dancefloor attitude. For something more funky and with direct impact on the dancers, "Rock My Soul" (Reborn mix) is a groove oriented DJ tool with some seriously syncopated rhythm action reaching near tribal moments.

Review: Made in Glasgow is a new label set up to support and promote artists from the Scottish city. Given Glasgow's long asso-ciation with Detroit through Rubadub, Soma and Club 69, it's not a surprise the label has succeeded in attracting Octave One as remixers of "Lounge Act". The Burden brothers have a long tradition of working with vocalists, which can be traced back through "Blackwater" right to their debut release, "I Believe". On this remake, the act's unmistakable, roll-ing rhythms are audible and support McLeod's esoteric, nasal vocals. The Burdens also add in some hazy, tranced out synths to complete this Glasgow-Detroit collaboration in style.

Review: In recent years, the Burden brothers seem to have devoted much of their time to live performance. Singles have been few and far between, and their most recent album - in collaboration with their other family project, Random Noise Generation - dropped way back in 2006. Burn It Down, then, could be considered something of an "event" album. Happily, they've lost none of their ability to combine rich, futurist melodies and evocative chords with rolling Motor City rhythms. At its best, such as on the classic Detroit brilliance of "Whatever She Wants" and the acid-tweaked funk of "The Forgotten", it's a stunning set. While not all the album lives up to these dizzy heights, there's still enough to suggest that it should be an essential purchase.

Review: Having first appeared on the monumental Techno 2: The Next Generation compilation in 1990, Octave One swiftly set out their sound to become the Detroit techno icons they currently are with the Octivation EP for 430 West. The rest they say is history. Given the reissue clamour of anything related to the birth of Detroit techno, it's quite strange that the record hasn't been licensed for an official new edition in the ensuing two decades or so, until now that is! Presented here in it's promo edition, you get a chance to here "Sonic Fusion", a track that never officially came out and was replaced by "There and Beyond". Any self respecting Detroit techno fan will know "Nicolette" and "Paradise" and anyone interested in increasing their knowledge of the genre should consider a must have!

Review: Originally released in 2000, Octave One's Black Water has now received the remaster treatment, taking the highly sought after first pressing of this bona fide Detroit techno anthem and giving it a boost for modern spinners to get busy with. "Black Water" and "Black Waters" are tough-edged bangers with that irrepressible Octave One energy, keeping the beats big and brutal and the melodies stabbing on the former, and stripping down to a raw drum track for the latter. However it's the "Untold" version that will get the crowds flipping out with its perfect string hook, rousing drums and Motor City romanticism.

Review: Sandwell District and Aril Brikha are among the most respected producers in their respective fields of techno, but it's not hard to believe that they felt some sense of trepidation when they were asked to remix Octave One, or that they approached the task at hand with caution. The adage 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it', probably flickered through their minds on occasion and if it did, it was with good reason. Octave One aka brothers Lenny and Lawrence Burden were among the first Detroit techno acts to make their name outside their hometown, and it is the act's breakout track, "I Believe", from 1990, which Sandwell District are tasked with reworking. Sandwell's version is respectful; anchored in tight, shuffling beats, they add layer upon layer of atmospheric soundscapes making the vocal sound muffled, almost ghostly, but without detracting from the original's sense of wonder. "Daystar Rising" is taken from perhaps the pinnacle of Octave One's career and was originally released as a split EP with Rolando and Mad Mike. Once again, the treatment is respectful and understated. Departing from his trademark deep techno sound, Brikha simply adds a tougher, acidic bass to the brothers' rolling rhythms and makes the chords sound slightly more eerie. It's a skilful edit with enough subtle changes to make a difference.
