Oliver Rosemann

Oliver Rosemann

Oliver Rosemann is a DJ and producer from Leipzig - Germany, active since the 90s. During this time, he gathered his experiences of timeless techno in the exact time it was created, which can be recognized later in his productions.

In the Leipzig scene he played numerous live sets in the early 2000s, including at the 1040, one of the legendary clubs of the time, or at the Sonne Mond Sterne festival. Increasingly, he began to show himself in public not only as a pure live act but also as a track producer. He oriented himself out of the Leipzig scene and tried to place his music directly internationally. With the collaboration with MasCon called "dualit" he had first big releases on labels like Earwiggle, CLR or Fith Wall Records and also international gigs e.g. in Antwerp.

But after that his solo project should be in the foreground again. Oliver got his own EP on Sunil Sharpe's label Earwiggle. The "Pointing from the Moon EP" was released, which was the starting signal for numerous following releases. To date, there are close to 180 tracks and remixes, including 3 LPs, released on labels such as MindTrip, MORD Records, Warm Up Recordings, Pole Group, Stockholm LTD and many more.

Another promising collaboration was to follow. Pfirter and Oliver started producing together in 2019 and could present their first joint EP in 2020. The Alpha EP came out that year on MindTrip and was a huge success. To date, the collaboration of the two includes several releases and there will probably be a few more.

Oliver is also present on stage. Whether as a live act or as a DJ, he knows how to create a dark, driving, ecstatic atmosphere on dance floors. He has already proven this in clubs like Distillery, Institut für Zukunft, About Blanc and other clubs also in other countries in Europe. Numerous podcasts recorded by him or live cuts from clubs, which were released over the years by renowned crews such as "Reclaim Your City" or "Staub", show this.

In 2021 he founded his own record label "Recorded Things", which he now runs together with Sebastian Rothermel. Also, here, his sound, which he produces or DJs, is formative and reflects what kind of techno he stands for.

Review: As is the case with previous EPs, the latest collaboration between Pfirter and Oliver Rosemann is named after a letter in the Greek alphabet. "Epsilon 1" is a dense track, with looped tones and relentless percussion unfolding over a jacking rhythm. The second "Epsilon" is more intense, as ominous waves build and build over resonating kicks. The release also features two stellar remixes. Lakej's take on "Epsilon 1" resounds to high-pitched percussive slivers and a hammering metallic rhythm. Meanwhile, seminal producer Sleeparchive turns "Epsilon 2" into a relentless Millsian workout, led by nickel plated kicks and foreboding, filtered drops.

Review: Oliver Rosemann takes a break from his Recorded Things label to deliver this killer EP for MORD. With a focus on hard-hitting sounds, Spells and Wonders is a no-nonsense techno release. "The Disappearing Act" gets the release off to a bruising start, with robust drums supporting relentless hi hats. This approach is mirrored on the steely, slamming "The Pledge and The Turn". Meanwhile, Rosemann adds a sense of drama to the release on "The Grand Illusion", where eerie string stabs cut through the piledriving rhythm. The tempo and intensity levels move up a few notches on "The Human Cannonball", while "Smoke and Mirror" rounds off the release with a menacing, bass-heavy coda.

Oliver Rosemann - "Qubits" - (5:20) 137 BPM
THER3MIN & Eissel - "Thuzero" - (5:03) 142 BPM
Review: Like its predecessor, the second volume of Exhibit shines a light on tough, hypnotic techno. Diego Oroquieta's "Friccion" captures the more atmospheric end of this dance floor-focused sound, as wave upon wave of tones build over a rolling groove. A similar approach is audible on Paula Koski's "Fever Coat". Led by doubled-up claps and a steely rhythm, Koski weaves in hypnotic bleeps - the end result is not radically dissimilar to vintage Function. The compilation also showcases a more percussive style. Audible on Michel Lauriola's drum-heavy "Intuition", it finds its fullest expression on the hard-edged loops of Klint's peak-time banger, "The Encounter".

Review: In what is fast developing into a state of the techno nation compilation, Illegal Alien delivers the second volume of Between Lands & Oceans. The Advent's "Tall Whites" is a lean, pacy techno track that takes the listener back to the act's mid to late 90s sound, while on "Aztek", Vinicius Honorio drops a similar, albeit more abrasive club track and Fixon's "Small Doses" is a rough take on Chicago ghetto techno. In contrast, N?rbak's "Rule Of Rescue" is a more nuanced, stepping track, while Abstract Division's "Encoder" and Merino's "Entering Colundi Galaxy" both focus on a subtle, tonal take on techno, inspired by Sahko and Sleeparchive.

Whatever Can Happen, Will Happen - (6:28) 131 BPM
Review: Oliver Rosemann, who has released on MindTrip and Konsequent, now debuts on Bas Mooy's label with a hard-hitting EP. The title track melds dense tribal loops with visceral percussion as Rosemann lays down a hammering rhythm. Meanwhile, "Rabid Dog" is a lean, linear rhythm in the Rob Hood mould, with repetitive, screeching riffs upping intensity levels. "Haunted Houses" sees Rosemann opts for a deeper approach, with eerie atmospherics set to a dubbed out, hypnotic groove. However, this esoteric approach is only a temporary divergence - in stark contrast, "Kernel Panic" hits hard with a splintered rhythm and distorted drums, while "Hazard Pay" is a raw, analogue jam.

Review: Gamma is the latest in a series of collaborations between Pfirter and Oliver Rosemann, and follows on from their recent joint EP on Stockholm LTD. Fans of pared back, hypnotic techno will find much to love here: "Gamma 01" pits Purposemaker funk against Ben Sims' loopy grooves to create a killer DJ tool, while on "Gamma 02", the pair serve up a more industrial sound, as steely riffs are fused with a driving rhythm. The third instalment sees Pfirter and Rosemann up the pace to drop a frenetic tribal workout, powered by razor shape hats, while "Gamma 04" is a deeper but still impactful slice of loopy techno.

Review: Next up on SRIE is a split release that shines a light on techno's more tripped out spectrum. Evod's "Wax" is a dark, pulsating stepper, its drones and blips dank and acrid. A more accessible take on this sound is audible on Giri's steely rhythm-led "Rejecto" where the tonal frequencies sound inspired by the bleep techno of LFO. However, the compilation's direction is brought back to the darker recesses by the mysterious sound scapes and ramshackle hi hats of CHIM?R's "Book Of Sand" the eerie, Sleeparchive-style tonal repetition of Moon Phase's "La Luna" and David Reina exploring Millsian mystery on the driving but alien-like "Sine Wave Dreams".

Review: This year is going to see MindTrip boss Pfirter focus on collaborations, and Alpha is the first in a series of co-productions. It's a peak time EP and starts with the grainy kicks and noisy percussion of "Alpha 01", which calls to mind Jeff Mills at his most visceral. On "Alpha 02", Pfirter and Rosemann deploy insistent metallic stabs over pounding kick drums, while the third "Alpha" is more high-paced, with the pair spraying steely riffs and rolling snares over a pounding rhythm. Maintaining high intensity levels right till the end, "Alpha 04" is a multi-layered metallic banger that sounds like Joey Beltram on steroids.

Review: Clearly influenced by late 90s techno, Leipzig based DJ/producer (and one half of the techno duo Dualit) Oliver Rosemann shares his debut four track EP on Argentinian label MindTrip. Intermediate World introduces us to Rosemann's world: the mentalist title track is sure to work for those heads down moments on the dancefloor, referencing both legends Mike Parker and Sterac, this is followed by the hypnotic and cyclical tool "Tengo", the austere and pounding warehouse mayhem of "Sines & Squares" and the early morning tunnel vision of "Kansas City Shuffle" which is pure psychedelia of the most twisted kind. Killer release!

Review: The third volume of Mutable Minds boasts established names lining out alongside emerging producers. One of those newer artists is Astronomical Telegram, whose "Pride" is a multi-layered dub techno affair. Another newcomer, James Bong, opts for a harder route with the acid-led "13", while Craig Mcwhinney aka Vohkinne drops the tough kicks and rave stabs of "Dead Orchard". Not to be outdone, the veterans also impress; both Pfirter's "Falling Bridges" and Patrick Carrera's "Valamar Conflict" are pounding tracks that unravel to the sound of pummelling kicks and grainy industrial riffs, while on "Intruder", Dimi Angelis delivers a blistering analogue techno banger that centres on firing percussion and grainy tones.

Review: Since the 90s, Par Grindvik's label has been following an unpredictable path and this is audible on its latest split compilation. Patch Two starts with Z.I.P.P.O's dreamy "Fabula", which features the wispy vocals of Gabriella Vergilov. By contrast, Laval's "Spitshine" sees the release veer towards the dance floor, resulting in a thundering tribal affair that revolves around heavy kicks and a dark, tranced out riff. Z.I.P.P.O changes gear on the firing rhythm and relentless, dense hi hats of the Rob Hood-style minimalism of "Cycle", while on "Incoming Goods", Jeff Rushin takes down the tempo but maintains the moody atmosphere thanks to some menacing bass stabs and eerie tonal bleeps. Rounding off this brilliantly off centre release is the thundering, Polygon Window-sounding techno of Oliver Rosemann's "Then We Will Fight In The Shade".
