Review: UK soul legends Ronnie Herel and Omar join forces for a release on DJ Spen's Quantize Recordings. The Extended Afro Soul Mix is effectively the "original" in this instance and operates in broken beat territory, marrying Omar's unmistakable vocal to complex percussion and some sublime keys work, while the label boss teams up with Reelsoul for a rerub that'll take the track onto house floors with its lilting piano chords and hefty bassline. Both versions come accompanied by matching instrumentals for maximum playability, and given the talent roster involved, do the exquisite production values even need mentioning? Classy.

Review: To celebrate the tenth birthday of their Future Retro album, The Layabouts have asked pals Sean McCabe and Turbojazz to remix one of the standout tracks from that set, the tech-tinged deep house number 'As Long As You Believe', which features a spellbinding lead vocal from UK soul legend Omar. The pair's main 'Remix' (which is also available in edited and instrumental variations) is simply superb, with the pair layering Omar's vocal over fizzing synth stabs, ten-ton bass, rich Rhodes chords and a bouncy Afro-house beat. It comes backed by a luscious 'Reprise' version, which strips out the beats and showcases the beauty of the pair's instrumentation and arrangement, and a deliciously percussive, DJ-friendly 'Bonus Beats' mix.

Review: No, Essex's favourite disco don hasn't had a senior moment and accidentally covered Supermen Lovers' early 00s commercial house smash. Instead, he's teamed up with UK soul legend Omar on a brand new track that's... well, pretty much as unmissable as you'd expect a collaboration between Dave Lee and Omar to be! 'Starlight' comes served in fairly self-explanatory Club Edit, Extended Album Mix and Extended Instrumental rubs - I'd head for the album mix if I were you, because that's where a truly sublime jazz-funk piano line worthy of Rodney F himself gets to really shine though in all its glory.

Review: Freestyle's series of genre-themed download bundles continues, with June's 'Afro & Latin!' and September's 'Funk!' comps now joined by this 40-track collection of soul and disco nuggets from the label's back catalogue. The set kicks off with a bona fide classic in the form of Omar's 'There's Nothing Like This', after which come 39 more cuts from the likes of Carleen Anderson, Kyle Audist and The Fantastics (not to mention, in featured vocalist form, Jocelyn Brown and Caron Wheeler). The title's something of a misnomer - the emphasis is firmly on 'new old' soul, future R&B and neo-soul rather than disco - but there's much to enjoy here all the same.

Review: Glasgow's Shaka Loves You has rightly earned a reputation as disco-centric duo on the rise. Because of this, it's little surprise to see them at the controls on Bomb Strikes' first foray into the disco-focused compilation market. The Scottish pair have naturally pulled out all the stops for the occasion, selecting 20 hot-to-trot cuts that aptly blur the boundaries between disco, funk, nu-disco, electro and boogie. Highlights include, but are in no way limited to, the hazy, sun-kissed soul of Lack of Afro's "Back To The Day", the thickset P-funk revivalism of Kraak & Smaak's "Dynamite" and the rubbery disco-house-meets-UK soul flex of the Reflex's remix of Omar's "Vicky's Tune". Throw in a tasty selection of the pair's productions and you have a suitably strong collection.

Review: Omar has been riding the UK soul train for as long as our charts have been pumping and, the thing is, our boy hasn't put in a dud release to his name. Granted, it's not the sort of house and garage that will please everyone out there, buts it's certainly the creme de la creme of the genre. He's back on Freestyle with this magnificent EP in the company of the mighty Leon Ware, and the duo out in a sublime performance that oozes soul from every angle, a smooth and sexy episode backed by remixes from DJ Jazzy Jeff and Rob Hardt. The Reflex's remix of "Vickys Tune" is a masterful little slice of summer-friendly house music, but Maurice Brown's vocals help to to make "Brainstorm" into a dope hip-hop tune with a little Dilla magic at the core of it. Very nice gear.

Review: How much do you know about veteran UK soul singer Omar? For example did you know his surname is Lye-Fook? Perhaps there was a reason why he stuck to just his first name. Now "I Want It To Be" arrives as a teaser from new LP, Love In Beats. If you can imagine exotic, tropical syncopation set to Omar's warm tones, then you're almost there. Elsewhere "Destiny" lays on the bass and cowbells and "Sissy Pa Sissy" is surreal futuristic funk. Omar's brother Scratch Professor also appears to deliver a cut up leftfield rework of the title track.

Review: Veteran Brit-soul hero Omar is on a roll following the success of his recent comeback album, The Man. There has been some killer remixes already, but here Scratch Professer has reworked the entire LP. It's a tough job but the Prof has come through, keeping faithful to the originals but adding a little of his own magic too. Highlights include the cutup stop/start future-soul of "Eenie Meeni Myni Mo", the hazy urban jam "Treat You" and the jazzy late 80s vibe of "I Can Listen". Also included is a bonus mix of Omar's biggest hit, "There's Nothing Like This".

Review: Thanks to his BBC 6Music show, self-styled "complete package" - comic, actor, radio presenter, DJ and stand-up poet - Craig Charles has become the UK's best-known funk and soul enthusiast. It's perhaps unsurprising, then, that his annual Funk & Soul Club compilations are extremely popular. This third collection is every bit as potent as predecessors, featuring as it does a riotous mix of heavy funk, horn-totin' soul revivalism, dancefloor-friendly funk breaks (Skeewiff and Stephen Gray), cheeky brass band workouts (Hot 8 Brass Band's famous cover of "Sexual Healing") and a dash of smooth soul (the effortless Omar). With all bases covered and some killer material, it should be essential listening for all those of a soul and funk persuasion.

Review: Peppermint Jam have been successfully housing it up for about 20 years now. Lately they've been releasing a slew of compilations and this one explores the deeper end of their output. Despite the specific remit, it still covers a surprising amount of ground: from the haunted urban D&B of "Lay It Down (Triads mix)", funky Latin house "A World Celebration", smooth, luxurious deep house "Look Inside" and super ecstatic jump up party anthem "Check It Out". Looks like 'deep' can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people.

Dubbed 'Menue Two", this long player takes in a wide number of styles and tempos and makes it all work in that typical Mousse T way. Review: Turntablist/hip-hop veteran Scratch Professor has a long history of collaboration with UK soul legend Omar, having first lent a hand on production way back in 1994. Last year, his slinky, hip-hop-soul remix of the singer's "It's So" single was widely heralded as his best work for years (not difficult, mind, since he'd been largely inactive since the tail end of the '90s). On the back of that success, Tru Thoughts have asked him to remix more tracks from the excellent Sing (If You Want It) album. He does a bang-up, job, too offering deep, bumpin', jazzwise hip-hop revisions of "Your Mess", "Sing", "Ghana Emotion" and, most impressively, "Be A Man", which has a real Guru/Jazzmatazz feel.

Review: Omar's Sing If You Want It album, re-issued to much acclaim on Tru Thoughts in July, gets its second single release in the form of the It's So EP, featuring one of its undoubted highlights, the infectious "It's So". It's the diverse remixes that make this EP a must have; Zed Bias' remix of "It's So" turns the original into a bass-driven dancehall inspired bomb, whiles Scratch Professor's remix takes the pace right down, adding a soulful trumpet line which takes the somewhat bumping original into much mellower territory. The EP is rounded off by Mark De Clive-Lowe's neon tinted funk reworking of "Your Mess" which channels the spirit of Prince's 80s material through its fluorescent lens.
