Review: Having set their stall out as dedicated '80s revivalists - think Italo, new wave and freestyle - via a series of impressive singles and EPs, Parisian twosome Palavas are ready to release their debut album, 'Deesse D'Ete'. While some of the same influences are at play across the ten-track set, you'll also hear more live instrumentation, vocals aplenty, nods to disco and dub-disco, and more than a touch of sweltering Mediterranean sunshine. It's a classy and entertaining album all told, with our current picks of a very strong bunch including the bouncy new-wave pop of 'You Can't Get Away', the poolside Balearic disco shuffle of 'What You Feel' and the slo-mo, Moroder-meets-Kraftwerk chug of 'Illusion'.

Review: Contemporary producers' current obsession with all things 80s shows no sign of abating, as French duo Palavas bring us a cut that sounds like nothing so much as Heaven 17 in their early, more strident/less soulful days (think 'Crushed By The Wheels Of Industry' rather than 'The Luxury Gap'). If you look back on that decade with a shudder then the vocal here may not win you over but there's no denying the power of that walking synth bassline, nor of the extra helping of sparkly disco dust that's been liberally sprinkled all over it courtesy of Prins Thomas.
