Review: Claremont 56's own description of this, their third label compilation, is replete with phrases like "jazz-flecked Krautrock", "horizontal psychedelic dreampop" and "undeniably Balearic", which tells you as much about the grooves contained herein as my allotted 100 words ever could! Compiled by label boss Paul Murphy, the nine tracks featured range from the blue-eyed soul of Mike Salta & Mortale's 'Seashore Redemption' to Taichi Arakawa's ambient-leaning 'Ocean Surprise', and from the hazy, druggy psych of Neumayer Station's 'Unterfuhrung' to the fluttering flutes and shimmering Spanish guitar of Ferdi Schuster's 'The Fuzz Version', but it all adds up to a very pleasant hour of chilled listening.

Review: London-based imprint Claremont 56 presents a selection of classics from the label over the last 15 years (2007-2022). Expect the lo-slung and slo-mo fringes of downbeat, balearic and cosmic music with highlights coming from label founders Smith & Mudd who kick things off with "The Start", Jex Opolis getting some late-night boogie-down vibes in effect on his remix of Paraiso's "Teu Sorriso", legend Felix Dickinson ventures into deep chug territory on his Passport Control Mix of Alumnia's "Travel", the one-and-only Joe Claussell gets those spiritual and emotive feelings channelled into Hillside's "Walpole Days" Sacred Rhythm Mix. Plus, there's even a bit of lo-fi German indie from Bambi Davidson on "Brunswick".

The Dubs
The Visitor (Ray Mang dub reprise) - (5:59) 98 BPM
Late Train (Idjut Boy naughty wrong un) - (5:23) 105 BPM Hot
Review: As we continue to recover from the sheer awesomeness of Paqua's debut album Alkaliko, Claremont 56 commission two very special versions of the modern day Balearic hymn "The Visitor". Ray Mang reminds us of the true meaning of dub as we're immersed in a truly enveloping dynamic where flickers of the original's vocals fly and in and out of the mix. Idjut Boys follow a similar sentiment but instead of teasing us with the vocal shades, they extend, break down and rebuild the instrumentation in a way only they know how. This is the perfect complement to a perfect album.

Review: The first installment of Late Night Tales' After Dark was that rarest of things: a DJ mix that retained a smoky sense of early morning, home listening atmosphere while retaining an open-minded focus on the dancefloor. This follow-up - once again compiled and mixed by Bill Brewster - offers more of the same. Musically it's pleasingly varied, moving from the string-drenched downtempo beauty of Typesun's "Last One Home", to the heady Balearic rock of General Lee, via Justus Kohnke, the soulful post-bruk smoothness of As One, and the sprightly analogue electronics of Emperor Machine's remix of Paqua's "Late Train". There's also a bunch of previously unreleased tunes to enjoy, including killer contributions from the Mang Dynasty (AKA Ray Mang), The Gino Fontaine (Chicken Lips man Andrew Meecham) and - most surprising of all - The Grid and Robert Fripp.

The Visitor - (5:36) Hot
Review: For those that like their disco flavours mixed with 70s rock (as on Steve Miller's essential "Macho City"), this little two-tracker has a whole lot of Southern Fried groove to get into. "Dinosaur Zappa" has a great phasing vocal, clean guitar chops, a throbbing bassline and nice n' loose percussion, building to a pleasingly psychedelic climax. "The Visitor" is a more laid-back affair, catching a wave of dreamy atmospheres in a loungey key, replete with heartbreak strings and oodles of Balearic spirit. It's hard to picture music being made like this in these times, when it's this unfashionable and honest, but you'll find no complaints here.
