Hot Digits:100
Various
Review: For their 100th release, Hot Digits bring us a truly outstanding collection that gathers together the best of the label's last 50 outings. Just one look at the talent roster involved should be enough to get any contemporary disco lover's tastebuds tingling, replete as it is with names like Fingerman, Dexter Jones, Fray Bentos, C Da Afro, Dave Mathmos and Jet Boot Jack, and suffice to say the music they provide doesn't disappoint one iota! With 30 full-length cuts plus two hour-long DJ mixes there's no room here to go into every track, but whether you like it deep n' chuggy, funky n' furious or boogie-tastic n' soul-tinged, you'll find plenty of fresh ammo for your disco machine gun here.

The Dancefloor Cuts Vol 2
Various
Review: Spa In Disco bring us a nu-disco collection that dares to push the envelope a little - many of the tracks here will work just as well on deep, progressive and even tech-house floors as they will in straight-up nu-disco sets. Tony Disco's big 'n' beefy 'Pistolero', for instance, should go down a storm pretty much wherever shapes are thrown to stomping beats and hefty basslines, while LaFrench Toast's 'Spaceball' wouldn't sound out of place on 3am Recordings, Downunder Disco's 'Way Up High' is a dreamy, space-y post-club classic in waiting and Molinaar's 'Cruus' could even slot into more uptempo minimal techno sets. A pleasingly varied, highly enjoyable compilation.

Golden Cream Vol 2
Various
Played by: Discolypso, JAMES ROD
Review: Thicker than clotted cream and twice as opulent, Golden Soul's latest label retrospective is well worth your attention. It focuses on material released by the Spanish imprint in 2019, which was arguably the label's strongest year to date. Label founder James Rod makes a number of killer contributions, with the colourful, bass-heavy Balearic nu-disco chug of "Let's Play Together" (a collaboration with Parissior) and the dreamy Italo-disco throb of "Heart Rock (Aleito Mix)" standing out. Elsewhere, get your ears around the sparkling, breakdown-boasting sunrise rush of Dubhouser's "Ereh" and the thrill-a-minute Euro-disco effervescence that is Hoochie Coochie Papa's "Work My Body".

Not Quite House Cutz
Review: We'd rather not quibble with Parissior about the definition of "house", but to us the majority of the tracks on his "Not Quite House Cutz" EP sound like house. Disco, boogie and nu-disco influenced house, but still house. Regardless, there's much to enjoy throughout, from the swirling deep house chords, gentle acid lines and chunky grooves of "Don't Worry About It" and the acid-fired, disco-tech bustle of "Acid Shape", to the bass-heavy disco-house loop jam "Bad Thinking". Complimenting these three layered and ear-pleasing original cuts is a remix of "Don't Worry About It" by Fingerman. The Hot Digits supremo drags the track further towards filter-sporting disco-house territory by emphasizing some sharp horn samples and turning the bass up to eleven.

She Moves
Review: Spanish producer Parissior flexes his disco muscles on a four-track EP for Rare Wiri that demonstrates his versatility nicely. Hypnotic opener 'Another Chance' loops up just a few lines of a tremulous female soul/R&B vocal over a dusty, lo-fi backing to great effect, while the hazy, druggy 'She Moves' is slower-moving but beefier and more stripped-back, and features one of the most sonically crowded breakdowns you'll hear all month. 'Manay Rah' then takes us into shiny, sparkly 80s Italo territory, before Parissior underlines the point with the upbeat and very aptly titled throbber 'I Like Cosmic, My Girl Don't'.

Retro Future Disco Vol 2
Various
Review: Spain's Rare Wiri label bring us their second retrospective label comp, which follows on the heels of last year's Vol 1, and just a quick glance at the artists involved - who include Ilya Santana, Rayko, The Beat Broker, Yam Who? and Ziggy Phunk - will give the initiated a pretty good idea of the quality on offer! Gazeebo's 'Soul Dance' is rooted in the deep funk of the early 70s, Phunk's 'Let It Move You' is a brass-spangled disco-house groover, Rayko's 'B-Nano' has an 80s Italo vibe, 'Whishbone' by Parissior channels late 70s Euro-disco, and so it goes on for six more very playable nu-disco bullets.

Hot Digits: Year Four
Various
Review: To kick-start a fourth year of disco-fuelled madness, Hot Digits chief Fingerman has put together this sizeable compilation of previously unheard exclusives. As you'd expect, there's far more killers than fillers to be found amongst the 28-track deep selection or re-edits and original productions. Highlights include the clarinet-laden electrofunk-meets-disco bounce of Frank Virgilio's "It's Your Boogie Baby", the disco-goes-hip-hop flex of Tony Disco's delicious "Rolling Paper", the sparkling nu-disco goodness of "When It Comes To Funk" by Stephen Richards, the driving disco-house bump of Ash Reynolds' "Cold Girl" and the fuzzy electrofunk wobble of Don Dayglow's "Many Things". Throw in fine contributions from Chewy Rubs, Le Visiteur, norse man Jarle Brathen and, of course, Fingerman, and you have a must-buy collection of cuts.
