Review: The unstoppable Paul Woolford returns. If the veteran Leeds producer wasn't busy enough churning out retro flavoured dancefloor weapons as Special Request, or bold house and techno on acclaimed imprints like Hotflush, Aus Music and Planet E - he's also found the time to make uplifting party house vibes recently for Edible and now Hot Creations. Fittingly, his latest offering is named House Hits Vol 1: a tongue in cheek albeit direct title for these two catchy and potentially anthemic classic house perspectives. The familiar bounce of "Story Of My Life" is reminiscent of The Windy City's first wave - think Ralphi Rosario or the like. There's a familiar vocalloop on the deep down and dirty acid trip "Don't Waste My Time" as well, which channels another icon of the same period's heyday - Trax Records.

Review: Over the course of the last decade, Swiss stalwart Deetron has been responsible for a string of impressive remixes. Happily, these - and many others you may have missed - have now been collected together on the decidedly epic Re-Creation: Remixes Compiled. As you'd expect, the 25-track set flits between full-throttle, peak-time friendly techno futurism, bustling deep house goodness and more downbeat explorations that defy his reputation as a maker of killer club cuts. Highlights include the loved-up synth breakdowns and jacking, Chicago-style groove of his Juan MacLean remix, a wonderfully retro-futurist take on George Fitzgerald's "Every Inch", a thrusting, stab-happy revision of Quarion and a lusciously jazzy take on Todd Terje's "Alfonso Muskedender". That said, on another day we could have listed another five or six highlights: it really is that good.

Review: Despite being just two years old, Nick Harris and Eats Everything's label has established itself as one of modern house music's most promising imprints. This collection, which features tracks from Edible's first ten releases, shows why. It begins with the jerky groove, prowling bass and vocal screeches of Lord Leopard's "Mark of Passion", while Lauren Lane's "Diary of a Madwoman" documents a darker, less party-focused take on Edible's rhythm-heavy, off-beat sound. Brett Johnson, whose work has undoubtedly inspired many of the artists on the label, makes an appearance with the driving, heads-down "Jack", while Rhythm Masters deliver a disco-heavy take on the sound with "Feel Your Love". All in all, this compilation is good enough to eat.

Review: The choice of Tony Humphries to mix Running Back's first label compilation is a significant one. Getting his big break in the early '80s as an understudy for the legendary Shep Pettibone's Kiss FM show, Humphries went on to become one of the defining DJs of house music's formative years, with residencies at New Jersey's Club Zanzibar and London's Ministry of Sound. His previous mixes illustrate his continuing ability to bridge dance music's past and present and his new one for Gerd Janson's imprint will mark its fifteenth anniversary. It is a timely reminder of what has made the Frankfurt powerhouse remain on many favourite label lists for over a decade. It's a mix of golden oldies and recent classics alike: from Todd Terje's smash hit from several years ago "Ragysh" and the anthemic "The Voice From Planet Love" by Precious System, through to more recent bombs. Two by Running back alumnus Shan ("Bassline Party"/"Work It") and the legendary Mr G's Motor City ode "Ben & Gerd" (Killin It M Day).

Review: Woolford is the latest producer to appear on Edible, after appearances by its owner Eats Everything and Rhythm Masters. The UK producer is on a high at the moment, having recently released one of the best mixes in the Fabriclive series as Special Request. Working under his own name for this release, he delivers the bugged out "Chaos", a wiry, jacking acid groove that has echoes of its author's DJ background at Back to Basics. On "Meditate", Woolford opts for a very different approach; sampling a euphoric female vocal repeating the phrase 'the way you thrill me', he fuses it with a shuffling, chugging rhythm and spine-tingling strings to create a real summer anthem.

Review: Paul Woolford has finally begun releasing music under his own name again, following years building up the hardcore and jungle flavoured Special Request project. "Heaven & Earth" follows a similar approach to his recent "Mother & Child" 12" on Hotflush, combining slick house rhythms with luscious, occasionally soaring orchestration. This time round, the bottom-end tech-house grooves are subtly darker and more intoxicating, while the string stabs and sweeps slowly build towards a spine-tingling breakdown, and notably wistful conclusion. The "symphonic house" flavour is stripped back a little on the epic flipside extension ("Part 2"), which offers three minutes of beat-less orchestration before introducing Woolford's elastic groove.

Review: The legendary Paul Woolford, who also goes by the name Special Request and who has appeared on everything from Sven Vath's Cocoon to Carl Craig's Planet E, returns to Scuba's Hotflush with a bouncy two-tracker that's bound to cause a stir on the dancefloor. "Orbit" takes over the entirety of the A-side with a powerful swell of bass hypnotics, driving percussion shots and a heavy dosage of head-banging. Over on the B-side, "MDMA" is inevitably madder, its bassline being more deranged and broken down...sliding nicely in between equally wonky piano keys and strange atmospherics. Large.

Review: If you've been to a night club over the course of the past six years, it's fairly certain that you will have heard "Erotic Discourse" at least once. Released by Paul Woolford under the Bobby Peru alias on 20:20 Vision in 2006, the track is rightly regarded as one of the highlights of the producer's storied career; featuring an effect akin to a golf ball dropping down a corrugated iron pipe, there's not really been a techno track since that's quite so weird. Now Hotflush have decided to revisit the track, delivering it into the hands of some interesting remixers. Dense & Pika's rework opts to leave the sonic weirdness wisely remains intact, whilst also bringing their weighty rhythmic leaning to the fore. Livity Sound's Kowton meanwhile delivers one of his signature revisions which pairs the rippling sonics of the original with some meaty subs, resulting in one of the strangest tracks to see light on Hotflush in some time. Make no mistake, these are two absolute killers here.
