Katakana Edits Vol 136
Handle It - (4:08) 118 BPM Hot
Little Love Case - (4:43) 117 BPM
I'll Be There - (4:14) 116 BPM
A Funky Situation - (4:08) 120 BPM
Review: For his outings on Breakbeat Paradise Recordings, Pecoe has served up party-starting, sample-heavy cuts that join the dots between funk, soul, disco and breaks, often mixing in raw and weighty basslines. For this Katakana Edits EP, he's switched to re-edits and hush-hush remixes, with predictably fun and funky results. He begins with 'Handle It', a smooth and gently loopy house style tweak of a killer disco gem with added hip-hop vocals, before expertly blending disco and R&B flavours on the loved-up lusciousness of 'Little Love Case'. 'I'll Be There' sees him tweak what sounds like a house-tempo, street soul-era cover of The Spinners' 'I'll Be Around', while 'Funky Situation' is a gritty and heavy pumper marked out by funk-rock guitar riffs and vintage rap vocals.

Funk Butter Volume Two
Roast Beatz - "Jungle Steppin" - (4:47) 122 BPM Hot
Gramophone Soul - "Day By Day" - (3:40) 112 BPM
Pecoe - "Good To Me" - (4:23) 118 BPM
Frankee More - "For The Music" - (5:04) 60 BPM
Review: If it's box-fresh but still authentically vintage-sounding funk vibes you're after, you'll find them in abundance on this V/A four-tracker from UK label Cuttin' It Fine. Roast Beatz are up first with the James Brown-ish 'Jungle Steppin', before Gramophone Soul marry War/ Sly Stone-esque vocal chants with rap snips on the big beat-infused 'Day By Day'. Pecoe's 'Good To Me' then brings more phat-assed retro vibes, complete with some familiar-sounding vocal bites, before Frankee More plays us out with the rumbustious 'For The Music', which rocks another chanted funk vocal. Overall, file somewhere between big beat, funk breaks and straight-up funk.

My Business - (4:06) 118 BPM
Gonna Do It Right - (4:10) 117 BPM Hot
Funky Dope - (3:51) 117 BPM
Review: You'd think James Brown's 'I Got You (I Feel Good)' had been sampled to death by now but here, Pecoe manages to lift a couple of lines from the middle eight and make them sound fresh on opener 'So Nice'. That sets the tone for an EP that's replete with party-starting funk breaks and familiar-sounding vocal and musical bites - 'My Business' marries 80s R&B diva snips to chunks of 'The Ultimatum' by US rappers Army Of The Pharaohs, while 'Gonna Do It Right' opens with 'Rock Creek Park'-esque guitar chops (though it's not actually a sample) and Kid N' Play make an unscheduled appearance on 'Funky Dope'.

LROY - "Soul Break" - (4:50) 50 BPM
Kakaow - "Shimmer" - (3:11) 108 BPM
Review: For this latest compilation collection, we see some of the strongest names under the Breakbeat Paradise banner getting involved for the first edition of 'Paradise Lounge'. Opening up with the funkadelic bass licks of 'Rescue Me' from Boydex & Crash Party, we kick off with a serious bang. Next, Bright Idea delivers the namesake as we are treated to blissful chord progressions of 'Fun At The Disco', followed by Pecoe's super groovy 'Need A Friend' and the summer-infused tones of Jayl Funk's 'She Is Hot'. From here we find ourself dipping into the psychedelic sounds of the early 90's as Gramophone Soul delivers the spicy 'Trouble', with the heavily dubbed vocal delays of LROY's 'Soul Break' and Kakaow's sizzling swing out 'Shimmer' then closing the EP in style. Lovely stuff!

Review: Something of a departure for the 'Katakana Edits' series here, as Pecoe, taking the helm for Vol 126, shifts the needle away from straight-up re-edits and moves it into the zone more properly labelled 'mash-ups', with most of the five taking an 'old meets new' approach. So contained herein you'll find The Whispers going head-to-head with Kelly Clarkson, Will Smith doing battle with Sister Sledge, Montell Jordan showing us how he does it alongside T-Connection, Hamilton Bohannon rubbing shoulders with US rapper Cupid and Busta Rhymes gettin' down with Unlimited Touch. File under 'surefire party starters'.

Feel The Vibe - (4:43) 116 BPM Hot
Disco Groove - (4:22) 118 BPM
Old School - (4:06) 118 BPM
Hit The Floor - (4:38) 117 BPM
Review: Four fine servings of classy contemporary disco here from Australian producer Pecoe, brought to you by ever-reliable Spanish label Rare Wiri. 'Feel The Vibe' itself kicks us off, a lo-slung funker with decided hints of jazz and an energising female vocal snip, before the vaguely Madhouse-y 'Disco Groove' brings fluttering geetars, a walking b-line and sampled disco-era vox pops. 'Old School' then adds hints of 80s boogie, and there are more 80s flavas to be found on 'Hit The Floor', though the vocal here might be a bit pop for some. A very solid EP all told, with the title track taking the gold for yours truly.

Bob Marley - "Exodus" (Sonale remix) - (3:47) 115 BPM
Review: Whenever we see the sounds of Breakbeat Paradise arriving in the store, we know for a fact that we are going to be in for a good time, especially when they revisit a series as exciting as today's. The fourth edition of their 'Breakin The Riddim' is a gem-laden experience, packed with wicked creations from the likes of BadboE, Funkin Basstards, DJ Clairvo FunkinRight & more, all adding their own unique approach to the table and giving this collection a seriously flavorsome feel. The whole project just exhales creativity in sonic design, from the rootsy overhauls of Jayl Funk's 'Come On Little Girl' to the more funkadelic refills of Pecoe's 'Bring Your Body. The variation really makes this collection special, with our favorites including TowlieDJ's vibrant overhaul of Cutty Ranks with 'Limbs', next to Sonale's LFO driven 'Exodus' redesign, taking classic Bob Marley vocals and twisting them into something completely new!

Pecoe - "Sunshine Love" - (3:53) 114 BPM
Roast Beatz - "Whoomp Times" - (3:50) 120 BPM Hot
Review: The Cuttin' It Fine crew have pulled together once again to deliver a bag of dancefloor ready riddims under the 'Funk Butter' compilation title, what more could we ask for? We begin with the emotive vocal sampling and big room keys of Frankee More's Re-Funk remix of 'I Like It' from Debarge, which sets high levels from the jump. From here, Mr Fitz delivers a horn-driven funk out on 'Sharons Land', topped with a powerful vocal display before the shuffling drum rhythms and disco-like string backing of 'Sunshine Love' from Pecoe does the business once again. Finally, Roast Beatz gets to work on rebuilding a classic Sister Sledge vocal set into a modern, groove-ridden breaks anthem. Lovely work from all involved!

A Good Feeling - (4:28) 118 BPM
Review: Continuing with their fiery start to 2022, Breakbeat Paradise are back in action here with another five track display of breaksy mastery, welcoming the mythic Pecoe back inside with a serious bang. We begin with the crunchy guitar riffs and sub-busting kicks of 'For The Funk', which through a well assembled drum set does a fantastic job as the title track for this collection. From here, heavy sample work arrives on the vocals for 'Make A Miracle', topped with lively guitar riffs again, before a booming bassline and sharpened drum smashes in the higher frequency ranges cause some serious damage on 'Hands In The Air', again sitting below a sprinkling of classic hip hop vocal slices. We move into some big room horn action next as 'Positive Vibes' takes a classic Barrington verse and resamples it into a catchy jig, before rounding off on another piece of tidy sample work with 'A Good Feeling', combining eerie pads and classic vocal textures for a wicked sign off.

Grandmaster Mash - (3:31) 117 BPM Hot
Review: The ever-dependable 'Katakana Edits' series rolls on, and while this latest installment might not win PECOE any deep diggin' brownie points, it does pack some very serviceable dancefloor-friendly reworks of classic cuts from days gone by. Leading the charge for this reviewer is 'Ice & Snow', which does unspeakable but very satisfactory things to Led Zeppelin's 'Immigrant Song', but elsewhere you get a fresh take on 'Jingo', 'Grandmaster Mash' fuses 'White Lines' with chunks of the rap from 'The Message', while 'Bold Sister' revisits James Brown's 'Bold Soul Sister' - leaving only the 60s deep funk source for 'You Can't Hide' unidentified.

Review: Hot on the heels of September's first volume comes this second installment of contemporary funk and breaks cuts from Pecoe, an Australian who ran the popular Breakzlinkz website for 10 years before making the move into production. The EP packs five original cuts, plus remixes of four of 'em - not sure why 'Take A Stand' missed out! - with the originals falling loosely under the funk-hop/funk-breaks umbrella while the remixes generally add a little more dancefloor grit. As such, diehard funkateers may turn their noses up but fans of the Plumps, Stantons etc would do well to check this EP out.

Pecoe - "Champion" - (3:55) 116 BPM
Review: It's difficult to envisage a Breakbeat Paradise drop that doesn't feature a serious tonne of quality, with this latest collection of 13 powerful creations making up the 'Boots Of Paradise' collection. The project takes a very central theme of reigniting hip hop vocals with dancefloor-ready reworks, from the classic Biggie sampling of Crash Party's 'The Juice' to the old school slicing of 'Ice Cream' from LROY and Aliens In Denmark's 'Chatty Tramp'. Even with this pretty solid central theme, the project has a lot of variation involved, from the sharpened drum punches and modernized synth slides of 'Brick Bounce' by Towlie DJ, to the more 4x4 influenced grooves of Morlack's 'Fall In Love With Me'. Our standout highlight for the whole drop would have to be Pecoe's 'Champion', which balances crunchy drums with well designed vocal sampling, which also makes it a perfect final entry.

Review: As always with Big Fat Mama Beats, they have come to put on a show with this latest addition to their 'Funk Bananas' compilation series, which enters its fourth edition with a dash of finesse. The combination of psychedelic melodies and groovy drum designs that lie at the heart of every track are what give the project a fantastic level of cohesion, as in the uplifting horn toots and lively vocals of Pecoe's 'Funky Individual'. The whole project hosts a pretty professional vibe, with the likes of Sir-Vere, The Funk Philosopher, Sonale, The Criminal Minds and more all making wavy additions. Our favourites from the project have to include the monstrous bass pulsations and techy arpeggios of B.U.U.G's 'Dancin Time', next to the Chubby Robots rework of 'Space Time' from Adrenalinez and Wiccatron's lively percussive masterclass in 'Funk Dribble.

Review: Upbeat, unpretentious nu-disco and disco-house are the order of the day here, much along the lines of Hed Kandi's mid-noughties Disco Kandi/Disco Heaven comps. With 14 tracks to choose from there's plenty of dancefloor bang for your disco buck, and while there's undoubtedly a whiff of fromage in the air in places (Badboe's rap-vocalled, Sister Sledge/InDeep-referencing 'Best Of My Beats', for instance, isn't a million miles from a Will Smith production) there are also slightly deeper pleasures awaiting those who are prepared to dig around a bit - see, for instance, the raw disco-funk of 'Miss Broadway' or Joy Legend's Hammond-sporting 'Pass It On'.
