Review: You know a young artist is one to keep close tabs on when they're linking up with Skibadee. Such is the case with young Pengo, a fast-rising artist who's best known for his killer shows on Rough Tempo. Already boasting collabs with the likes of GLM, Hyn and Amplify, 'Shots' is his third co-lab with the pioneering MC and arguable his best so far. It's backed up by a whole truck-load of trouble; the Magenta collab 'Blast' is a lesson in space and tension, 'Hitters' is all growl and grit, 'Back & Forward' is an all-out moaner with very trippy tendencies while 'Bass Addict' (with Master Error) is all about the drama and theatre. Last but not least 'Dot To Dot' pays homage to the jungle foundations with some crucial bars from NV. Shots fired!
Review: Fresh from laying down the massive 'London' on Young Guns earlier this year, young Brizzle badman Hyn fires up the engine on rising Welsh label Breeze. Another very generous bundle of cuts, once again he's showcasing some serious talent. 'Frequency' takes the lead with some raw sandpaper style bass textures over a precision two-step while 'Monster' is a gloopy, toxic muddy swamp of a track that threatens to suck you into its perils at any minute. Elsewhere 'Evacuate' is a tense and chilling piece of bassline moodiness with some great random drum work in the mix while 'Fear' finishes with the naughtiest breakbeat-based rattler of the set. Breeze? Hurricane more like.
Review: GLM is an up and comer on the rise and this EP on Helix is going to do a lot for that trajectory, as he has come up with four absolute percys. There's a distinct blending here of vocal sampling with funky, jump up sounds and it works incredibly well, his knack for a catchy arrangement is audible across every corner of this release and we seriously dig it. 'Feel The Night' is the best embodiment of this sound and that's why it's the title track, as neon vocal shimmers emerge out of the intro and flow seamlessly into its jump-rope complex of bass flickers and foghorn stabs. A proper roller. Wicked.
