Review: It's been almost a year since Scoped Sounds last dropped some jump up gold but boy are they making up for lost time as co-boss Pengo recruits a bunch of A-list mates for a series of proper heavy collabs. Magenta, Amplify, Stillz, Jack Reeves, Fatman D and Sero all join the fray at different points and the results cross the board from funky to flattening. Highlights include the tongue in cheek vibes and jokes sample of 'Wrong Tune', the pure undiluted venom of 'Badman' and the solo finale by Pengo himself 'Take Your Pick'. We'll take the lots thanks mate!
Review: Sharpen up those steely blades and polish them until they shine... Pengo and Fatman D have linked up to summon the spirits of 'Samurai Jack' and bloodshed is guaranteed. Choppy choppy, slicey slicey... Pengo's bassline ripples and flexes with industrial strength precision as Fatman brings his sternest sermons to the mix. Trust us, this will cut into any mix with sheer brutality.
Review: Originally released as a free download to mark hitting the big 5K, Temple, Magenta and Baba's guitar-twanging, Devil-chasing damager 'Mutiny' now enjoys a bounty of remixes on Debunked. Pengo goes first with a subtle-but-savage slapper that's heavy on the kicks and low end croak. Shifu meanwhile focuses on the alien gurgles and frazzled funk with his remix while Froidy goes all-in with his dramatic and stern twist. Textbook remix action, all of these will make any dancefloor submit!
Review: Don't waste time hate, it's time 'Modulate'... And Pengo is the man to modulate with. Last spotted on Pick The Lock last summer with his killer 'Evacuate' EP, he returns with something even bigger. Featuring link-ups with the likes of Begone, Inflate, Nexus and the bossman Nick The Lot himself, each cut slaps with grotty grooves and sizzling sickness. Highlights include the hype-fuelled builds and angular stabs of 'Tear The Place Up', the trippy sci-fi energy of 'Not Playing' (with Inflate) and the laser blazing finale fire 'Flex' (with Nexus) Meaty!
Review: Following their launch release this summer, Scoped Sounds return with another many-handed bruiser bonanza. Jay Jay's driving but co-pilots throughout the trip include the likes of Magenta, Pengo and Alphaze as we're flung from bassline pillar to breakbeat post. Highlights include the filtered string sweep on the lead track 'The Thing', the warbling reverse bassline and KO punch energy of 'Everything Cool' and the dramatic stabs and a grizzly bassline twist on 'Questions' but to be real, the whole EP hits hard. A very exciting snapshot of where jump up is at as we skank into 2023.
Review: Scoped Sounds co-boss Pengo continues his firing vein of form with this powerful set of wonky bassline grunters, this time on Zombie Recordings. Featuring collabs with the likes of Natrix, Master Error & Stillz, Shifu and Cuvurs, the EP flexes across the full grot spectrum with highlights hitting you right between the eyes like the glitchy spasms of 'Lies', the hyper-speed disco ripples of 'Necessity' and the sci-fi theatre of 'Step To'. Unique.
Review: Call security. Call the police. Call your mum. Pengo's back on Grid and he's here to break your necks with a grizzly barking two-stepper that's so on point you don't even feel it snap. Further beatings follow... Warhead joins the scrap for the off-beat weirded out 'Wonky', fellow Scoped Sounds boss Jack Reeves throws a few punches in with the jazz-tinged 'Bro' while 'System Error' sees Pengo go full round-house kick loco on you with its brazen dark funk. You still not dead yet? You will be once the 2022 VIP of Pengo and Master Error's 'Versatile' kicks you in the groin and 'Let It Roll' (with Cuvurs) gives you a dead arm! Wind your neck in!
Review: Hot on the heels of his 'Heaters' earlier this year, Pengo returns to Nick The Lot's criminal fraternity with this massive collection of emergency drills. Six cuts in total, featuring collabs with the likes of Amplify, Master Error, Cuvurs, StillZ and Magenta, 'Evacuate' will do the opposite of its title and fill dancefloors rather than clear them. Highlights include the disco vocal stab and star-gazing arpeggio on 'What You Want', the strong sense of fun and wonked out bass on 'Shutdown' and the bouncy, frog-like furty on the finale 'Despicable'. Now get outta here!
Review: It's always a lively affair when the Grid Recordings team are in town, especially with this new pair of remixed weapons, giving two Pengo originals a spicy new lease of life. First, Brighton's own Stillz steps up for a gnarly overhaul of 'Elevate', which through a gritty combination of sizzling synth swipes and syncopated drum stutters, is sure to send the dance into an absolute tizz. From here, Warhead then arrives with a slightly more stripped back creation, unleashing a tidal wave of industrial synthetic switch ups and sub-busting bass action, giving 'Versatile' a completely new direction. Two very cool recreations that are going to cause a serious amount of damage.
Review: Celebrating a year of killer underground releases, Metal Work and Amplify's Gradient label serve up 'Momentum', a collection of crisp cuts from some of their nearest, dearest and all-time sickest. Agro takes the lead with 'Blartoon', a bruisy, woozy cut with a real knuckle scuffing bassline. It's backed up by a whole host of fire riddims: Breakout & Steryx's 'Antidote' is all about the haunting grimey harmonics, Flint gets sexy with the off-beat happy-slappy wonkathon 'Lap Dance', Master Error & Natrix's 'Oblivion' makes those high-frequencies trills growl like lions on helium, Pengo's 'Don't Give Up The Fight' is all about the lazer blast one-note bassline riff while Stillz brings the fear and furore on the tense and creepy 'Area 41'. Keep the momentum going!
Review: While many folk went and got a dog during lockdown, yung Teezy here went and made his own 'Puppy'. Much cleaner than a mutt that bites all your furniture and makes a mess everywhere, this puppy growls softly and jumps buoyantly over the chiselled beats. There are plenty more dogs in the kennel, too; 'Denial' is a sleek Doberman of a tune, all pointy, pacy and tense, 'Heaven' is a golden retriever, all sweet when it wants to be but deep down a working dog , 'Bass In Ya Head' is a loyal staffy, all bubbly and up for mischief while 'Acknowledge' is a Dachshund, all snake like and with a bassine that yaps away cheerily before 'Rolling Deep' roars in like a rottweiler, all beefy and bulky but doesn't have to say much to make its presence know. You gonna bark all day little doggy?
Review: You know a young artist is one to keep close tabs on when they're linking up with Skibadee. Such is the case with young Pengo, a fast-rising artist who's best known for his killer shows on Rough Tempo. Already boasting collabs with the likes of GLM, Hyn and Amplify, 'Shots' is his third co-lab with the pioneering MC and arguable his best so far. It's backed up by a whole truck-load of trouble; the Magenta collab 'Blast' is a lesson in space and tension, 'Hitters' is all growl and grit, 'Back & Forward' is an all-out moaner with very trippy tendencies while 'Bass Addict' (with Master Error) is all about the drama and theatre. Last but not least 'Dot To Dot' pays homage to the jungle foundations with some crucial bars from NV. Shots fired!
