Review: Chronic is a sub-label of V Recordings that's specifically for rolling, rapid and rough tracks, the ones that are too naughty for the main label yet too good to throw out. Jumping Jack Frost as curated this latest compilation for Chronic and it's simply too good, with a wicked mix of vibes. From the snarling funk of Philth's 'Sanctuary', the wobbling energy of 'My Flava' by Command Strange or the rough jungle on Bailey's 'Computer Life', this LP injects the old-school vibe into new-school clarity. Arguably the stand-out though is DLR's 'Dafunk, a combination of stuttering drums and upbeat samples wrapped up in typical DLR-esque fashion.

Review: And so the Metalheadz remastering trip continues. This time we head back 21 years for a slice of absolute jazz perfection. Previously the B-side to his massive "Predator", it's now been updated with a little 2017 production muscle allowing the freeform soulful stepper to still sound wholly relevant and still years ahead of its time. From the lolloping bassline to those magical brushed snare breaks to the overall sunshine warmth, this record alone reminds us why Peshay had such a critical influence in the formative days of drum & bass jungle. No collection is complete without this.

Review: This guy is a producer who marches to the beat of his own drum (machine) having recently released his first album for seven years. "Generation", he's now finally releasing a single from it. This EP is really an album sampler, featuring three tracks culled from the long player. It's a good introduction to a good album, covering perky 60s shufflebeat on "Generation", rolling and lose hepcat jazz "Vanguard" and the brooding soul-hop of "Bronx Life".

Review: Given the clear jazz, Latin and jazz-funk influences in his drum and bass productions, we probably shouldn't be all that surprised by the sound of Generation, Peshay's first album since 2004. That we are says more about our preconceptions than the album itself. You see, Generation is Peshay in live mode, utilizing organic drums, horns, guitars and vintage synths to create impeccable tracks that pay tribute to his myriad of influences, from jazz and Brazilian beats, to old skool electro (the freestyle-tinged "Dirty"), rubbery jazz-funk, sensual, clav-happy soul (the thrilling dreaminess of "Never Let You Go") and sun-drenched downtempo grooves. It's a brilliant set, all told, full of hazy warmth and luxurious musicality. It's easily his best album to date and a joy from start to finish. Seriously, don't sleep on this one.

Review: With this latest release for Tru Thoughts, Peshay continues to shed his DnB roots in favour of a more funk-based sound. In fact all three songs here could be compared to New York City and its differing eras: "Seville" with it's Latin-flavoured piano house is pure early '00s vibes. "Midnight Express" on the other hand, jumps back to the gritty NYC of the 70s sounding like the soundtrack from an episode of Starsky & Hutch. Finally "Kickin It With The Piano Trio" is the sound of jazzy Downtown coffee and record shops of the early 90s. Metalheadz, this ain't, but it's still damn good!

Since appearing on the scene back in 2005 with an album packed with exclusives from Roni Size, Fresh, Calibre and dBridge, the label have come back stronger than ever with their latest instalment. Featuring modern heroes Need For Mirrors, Peshay and Eveson alongside fresh talent from the likes of Pennygiles, Duoscience, Atlantic Connection and Flaco, each track is a reassurance that drum & bass from the Liquid V corner of the scene is still going strong. At 28 tracks plus two mixes featuring MCs Stamina and TRAC, how could you say no?
