Review: New label Stone Tapes assembles a cast of underground artists for this its debut release. First up is Karim Maas. An alias of Ruffhouse producer Tom Cooper, Maas' "Removal Of DECC" is led by gradually unravelling break beats and eerie sound scapes. Pessimist's "Ultranova" is based on a similar approach, with teased out broken beats and whiplash percussion prevailing, while an even more funereal atmosphere dominates on Overlook's "Purr". The mood is so bleak and haunting that it's impossible to escape the chill of winter from its raw, mid-tempo rhythm and fog horn belches. Finally, Talker's "Cross Purposes" ups the tempo for a bruising arrangement, led by dense tribal drums.

Review: Simon Shreeve's imprint serves up a killer split release that ripples with barely restrained menace. First up is label regular Overlook, with "Former Self", a spooky stepper that builds and builds to a darkly hypnotic high. Shreeve himself dons his M?nic pseudonym for the low-slung broken beats and clanging metallic percussion of "Stampede". He also teams up with Jan Grebenstein for "Cutting The Ties That Bind", a drawn out industrial jam. Remaining in this general field is Pessimist, who has released on Blackest Ever Black and Creme Organization. He delivers the death march dirge of "Indigo", which brings this wonderfully eerie release to a close.

Review: Pessimist has been releasing drum'n'bass since 2010, but as this, his debut album shows, his music is hard to categorise. That said, a bleakly atmospheric streak runs through Pessimist. Allied with his innovative drum programming and ability to conjure up the most powerful sub-bass tones in electronic music, it makes for an unforgettable work. There are high-speed rollers like "No Matter What" to satisfy his core fan base, but when he moves into less defined areas, the album really shines. "Bloom" is a wild ride, all crashing cymbals and live drums, while the tribal groove on "Grit" is supported by a bass that is so darkly viscous, it could be mistaken for an oil slick. Best of all though are "Peter Hitchens" and "Spirals", where Pessimist creates morose moods over rattling drums and skeletal percussion.

Review: For its 50th release, UK-based Osiris Music has rightly thought of landing with a fully-packed compilation from all corners of its vast and explorative catalogue. As a side note, it's important to say that this imprint, along with a few other key stables, has been responsible for the successful merging of the techno and dubstep worlds over the last 5 years. Ipman's broken, techno-leaning tool "Persistent Dread" is a great example of this early on, with peeps like Pessimist or MAnnic also providing some new and exciting flavours in the field. The one like Killawatt is also on duty here, bringing through some delightfully eerie industrial vibes, while Paul Mac, Sleeper, and Juno favourite Manni Dee deliver amuch needed 4/4 swing to liven the dance up. Fully-packed and loaded.

Review: Kristian Jabs aka PESSIMIST has, by now, racked up a rather impressive catalogue of dark, cerebral bass slayings, and we very much see him as a reliable source of new, forward-thinking club music to take us into the next decade. He's been considerably nomadic up until now, preferring to skip from label to label, and he makes his debut on Osiris with this new four-tracker, Pagans. The title tune is a creeper in every sense of the word, building up slowly and ominously, but also opting to deliver a menacing techno twist through subtly pulsating bleeps and beats; "Astrous" is comparatively more lively, but this is another slow-burning cascade of satanic dance music built for the most cavernous of rooms. "Inner Circle" chooses to unleash a more traditional techno formula, albeit surrounded by another sinister collection of skeletal sonics, leaving "Mist" to liquefy its technoid sounds into a grey-scaled pool of outsider sounds. Excellent.

Review: Ingredients continue to cut the mustard with their excellent selection and ear for a good tune and this, the third installment of the Choice Cuts series, is no exception. Bringing together a range of top-notch artists including Krakota, Foreign Concept, Jubei, Spirit and more, this album is a pleasure from start to finish. Kicking off with "Be Myself" by Krakota which is full of booming bass and metallic, warping SFX, we are taken through cuts such as Dramatic & dbAudio's "The Green Box" and Jubei's excellent "The Path" with its ominous, eerie atmospherics and whisperings.

Review: A very tidy collection of tracks here from Neil Monteiro's ever-reliable Horizons imprint. From the lush atmospheric sounds of Sunchase, who opens the 12-track compilation, through the ponderous calm of Clarity's "Head Rush" to the bass-driven cuts from June Miller & Reflekt and Nickbee & Malk, this "Internal Affairs 2" provides a great selection from across the deeper side of the D&B spectrum. Household names like Data and June Miller sit alongside new faces and upcoming talent. Other highlights include Pessimist - "Syncopation", a raw, dark little roller, and Blocks' melancholic offering "Undercurrents".

Review: Kicking off with a VIP of one of the killer 90s jungle nostalgia anthems of 2010 - Bladerunner's "Back To The Jungle" - it's a great start to the next Critical compilation. Moving through the tough, percussive sounds of Break, soulful dub tinged efforts of Breakage, the blissed out Calibre in "Rockafella" to the sounds of man-of-the-moment, hotly tipped Enei with his fantastic "Forgive Me" around the halfway point, it's immediately apparent why Kasra's label has garnered such respect from his peers. Lomax - one half of Loadstar - provides a deeper incarnation to his Ram bangers in "Innocent X" and elsewhere, Rockwell's "Underpass" makes a re-emergence as does ubiquitous anthem "Redlines" which closes this utterly superb compilation.
