Napoli
Napoli (Pete Herbert remix) - (6:14) 120 BPM
Review: Redsole may be a comparative newcomer to the UK house scene (production-wise, at least) but he's made a good impression in a short space of time, while Pete Herbert's been a major underground disco player for donkey's years. So, get the latter to remix the former and you'd be expecting good things... and you'd be right! Herbert's remix of 'Napoli' is a tad slower and considerably more understated than Redsole's original but loses nothing of its dancefloor appeal, keeping those energising pianos intact and getting nice n' squelchy in the bassline department. A smooth remix that'll take the track onto classier floors.

Pete Herbert Remixes EP
Various
Pete Herbert - "Back To Bahia" (dub version) - (6:30) 121 BPM
Low Cut Top - "Everyday Is A Holiday" (feat Venessa Freeman - Pete Herbert dub) - (7:51) 120 BPM
Review: In which UK scene stalwart Pete Herbert remixes five tracks by other people and one of his own, to predictably fine effect. The EP opens with the understated synth-y throb of 'Pourquoi', before 'Back To Bahia' takes us down a slightly housier path. 'Orange Chika' then takes a left turn into classic Balearic territory - complete, from the two minute mark, with uplifting piano riff - before the remaining three tracks play us out on a more straight-up disco tip. It's all superbly executed - as you'd expect from Herbert - but leading the charge for me is the big, bad funker that is 'Revnorev'.

Balearic Headspace, Vol 6

Hifi Sean - "Sunshine Dub" (feat Jean Honeymoon) - (6:56) 120 BPM
Review: 'Balearic' was never meant to be a genre: originally, it was about playing all different kinds of music regardless of genre. The latest 'Cafe Del Mar' comp recently reminded us all of that and now, just to underline the point, here comes Vol 6 in Midnight Riot's 'Balearic Headspace' series, which packs in everything from Hi-Fi Sean's deep acid bubbler 'Sunshine Dub' to Amma's fine, fragile and near-bruk Sade cover, via ultra-mellow piano house from Hypnotic Lovers, spaced-out midtempo boogie from Shalvoy, 80s Europop stylings courtesy of Frank Karma and more besides... including, yes, a very 'Balearic', female-sung Steve Miller Band cover from Dominic Dawson.

Far Flung
Dear Hector - (7:24) 120 BPM
Far Flung (In Flagranti remix) - (6:17) 120 BPM
Review: It's been a while since Balearic nu-disco don Pete Herbert last released a solo single, so this surprise EP is more than welcome. The long-serving, Ibiza-based producer is in fine form from the get-go, with title track 'Far Flung' offering an excitable and joyous mix of hands-in-the-air piano riffs, dirty bass, flashes of Balearic guitar an poolside synth melodies. That track is first given the remix by Gold Suite, who turn it into a drowsy, mid-tempo Balearic soundscape, before In Flagrantri re-imagine it as a boisterous, low-slung piano-house anthem. Elsewhere, 'Dear Hector' is a retro-futurist, squelchy bass propelled Italian style deep house treat, 'Early One Evening' is an organic, Rhodes-powered chunk of colourful nu-disco loveliness, and 'South Seas' is a sparkling, sun-kissed treat.

Review: There's naturally plenty of high-grade material to be found on Jolly Jams' latest round up of previously "promo only" material from their regular vinyl missives. It's a thrill-a-minute ride through illicit underground dancefloor pastures that touches on a variety of styles, from the "Buffalo Gals"-sampling early Chicago House flex of Promo Only's "Promo Only" (track 9) and the pitched-down jazz-funk/disco-funk re-edit brilliance of Conor's "Sure Thing", to the Ron Hardy style grooves and dub delays of new wave/proto-house rework "Sake of Nothing" by Slaves of Love, via DJ Kaos's sought-after dancefloor tweak of an infamous Italo disco-era cover of Eric Clapton's "After Midnight" (here re-titled "Midnight Patrol"). The latter, now near impossible to find on vinyl, is simply essential.

Expresso - (6:44) 122 BPM
No Big Thing - (6:07) 122 BPM
Review: Following last year?s three-way collaboration with Martin Denev and Robert Owens, Pete Herbert goes it alone on his first solo single since 2016. Of the two original Herbert productions on show, it?s the sparkling, Rimini-in-the-mid-?80s vibe of ?Expresso? ? think druggy, Italo-disco style arpeggio bass, warehouse-friendly synth riffs and mind-altering drum machine cowbells ? that?s really floating our boat. That said, the guitar-flecked cheeriness of Balearic disco workout ?No Big Thing?, which contains some killer dream house style piano solos, is also alluring. Bottin emphasizes the track?s dreamier elements on a loved-up electro revision just crying out for sunset plays, while Yam Who throws the kitchen sink at ?Expresso? with predictably impressive results.

Made In The Shade
Pass Me By (feat Robert Owens - Pete Herbert remix) - (5:28) 120 BPM
Ruby Star - (3:33) 120 BPM
Review: Given that Pete Herbert has done more than most to define the synth-heavy nu-disco sound, it's pleasing to see that he's finally got round to recording a debut solo album. Made in the Shade naturally encapsulates all that's good about Herbert's work - think colourful synthesizers, loved-up pianos, dreamy chords, rich analogue synth-bass, Italo-disco style arpeggio lines, disco cowbells and an saucer-eyed Balearic mindset - while delivering a string of tracks that sound as good slouched on the sofa at home as they do while dancing in the sunshine. Highlights come thick and fast, from the classic Italo-house surge of "Washed Up" and T-Coy-does-nu-disco cheeriness of "Night Boat", to the soul-flecked tingle of Robert Owens hook-up "Pass Me By" and groovy, acid-flecked deepness of proto-house shuffler "Time".

Pass Me By (Dr Packer remix) - (6:30) 120 BPM
Pass Me By (Pete Herbert remix) - (5:28) 120 BPM
Played by: Pete Herbert, JAMES ROD
Review: This is big: a collaboration between Balearic nu-disc heavyweight Pete Herbert and "the voice of house" himself, Robert Owens. In its original form, "Pass Me By" is bubbly and attractive, with Owens' adding deep, soulful and emotion-rich vocals to a sparkling, synth-heavy backing track that effortlessly joins the dots between freestyle, proto-house and Italo-disco. The equally impressive remix package is headed up by two fine reworks from Daniele Baldelli and DJ Rocca: a chugging, undulating cosmic disco vocal version and a spaced-out, groove-driven Dub that hits home hard despite the lack of Owens' full vocal. Elsewhere, Aussie adventurer Dr Packer gives it an electrofunk flavoured house makeover and Pete Herbert turns in a fluid, Balearic-inspired rework full of heady synth lines and tumbling pianos.

Review: Since launching as a Tirk sub-label in 2009, Nang Records has gone on to outlive its parent label and become one of the most reliable imprints in nu-disco. The label's progress has traditionally been charted by compilation series The Array, with new volumes appearing every 12 months or so. This latest installment is naturally packed with highlights, from the sparkling disco-soul of Hot Toddy's remix of Situation's Andre Esput hook-up, "Get To Know Me", and the contemporary Italo-disco throb of James Rod's "Steelerr", to the quirky Balearic bliss of Cardmoth, the synth-heavy wooziness of Deepkey, and the trippy, acid-flecked thrills of Aimes' "A View of Istanbul".

Promo Only
Baffopizza - "Promo Only" - (7:23) 123 BPM
Pete Herbert - "Promo Only" - (6:28) 122 BPM Hot
Review: DJ Kaos seems to keep Jolly Jams' most "hush-hush" material for the label's occasional Promo Only series. There's plenty to get excited about on this latest digital installment. For example, you'll struggle to find a more on-point early Chicago house edit than Baffopizza's sterling, gospel-tinged effort - all sweaty, jackin' beats, chunky bass and swirling vocal samples - though Kaos's own effort, a deliciously druggy, basement-bothering affair - pushes it close. Pete Herbert's contribution bubbles away impressively via waves of acid and dubbed-out synth lines, while Leo Mas and Fabrice's remix of Conor's contribution effortlessly flits between cut-up electro drums and blasts of rubbery, punk-funk grooves.

Review: Big Terje vibes on this instant summer smackdown of a track. Sprightly synths, dubby chugs, a lolloping live bassline and confident guitar washes on the final climax. If this doesn't have your crowd grinning like lunatics then there's something critically wrong. Dicky Trisco adds even more euphoria to the fire with a piano line so strong you could be convinced it's 1990 and we're in Italy. Heavenly.

Mareh Drops EP
Various
The Revenge - "Strings Of Fife" - (6:01) 124 BPM
Review: Last year, the crew behind Brazil's well-loved Mareh festival decided to launch their own label. Like their 2014 debut EP, which boasted cuts from Eric Duncan and Pete Herbert & Dicky Trisco, Mareh Drops is another all-star affair. The Revenge kicks things off with the sparse, string-laden tech-house bump of "Strings of Fife", before Berlin-based Canadian Eddie C delivers the quietly impressive "Take Me Or Leave Me", a delay-laden deep house shuffler with sun-kissed disco influences. Pete Herbert goes solo on the deliciously bright, breezy and sun-drenched Balearic disco groover "El Bigotes", before Max Essa goes deeper into Balearic territory with the sweet synthesizer arpeggios, bubbling beats and dreamy pads of "Night Measure".

Eric Duncan - "Nerve Control" - (6:16) 122 BPM
Review: Brand new nu-disco brand from Brazil, Mareh have already established themselves as sonic connoisseurs with their annual festivals, long before this debut release. NYC don Duncan takes the lead with a stately Italo-referencing groover that builds and builds with analogue insistency, twisting, turning and evolving throughout. Pete Herbert and Dicky Trisco follow on a much funkier flex. A nagging synth hook, loopy guitars and a pertinent sense of disco insistency are all tied together with a bold swing and plenty of party panache. Mareh mercy!

Say What You Want
Gang Related - (5:45) 120 BPM Hot
Slave To It - (5:43) 120 BPM
Review: Given that he's one of the owners of Maxi Discs - alongside longtime pal and sometime production partner Dicky Trisco - it's perhaps surprising that this is Pete Herbert's first solo single for the label. Amazingly, it's also his first EP under his own name for three years. Naturally, there's plenty to enjoy, from the bouncy nu-disco bass, Italo riffs and rolling disco percussion of "Gang Related", to the Reverso 68 style Balearic nu-disco of "Say What You Want" and bold, anthemic, piano-laden electrofunk rinse-out "Slave To It". Dicky Trisco reworks "Say What You Want", emphasizing the original's Italo-influenced melodies while giving the track a greater dub disco flex.

Tonight's The Night - (5:42) 120 BPM
Body Working - (5:20) 121 BPM
Review: A Juno Download exclusive here, collecting some rare Pete Herbert edits previously only available on a CD release from 2010, showcasing his fantastic taste and tweaking prowess. "Tonight's The Night" is a decidedly upbeat cosmic number with Italo leanings, filled with delayed piano and synth breakdowns, sounding most like his work as Reverso 68. "At Claudia's", meanwhile, has a much more Mediterranean vibe, with a siesta tempo and a breathy female spoken word vocal and flanged guitars. "Body Working" is another fast moving Italo oddity, with a hi-NRG arpeggio and motivational robo vocals. The highlight however is "Spaced", an edit of Sheila and Black Devotion's Nile Rodgers produced "Spacer". It draws out the incredible piano refrain and insistent guitar lick, holding back the vocal until the final third, when the track explodes into life.
