A Swing Is Not A Throw
Dream Implosion - (3:12) 89 BPM
Review: Peter Van Hoesen played exclusively as a live act last year, and this EP is derived from those performances. This approach sees him re-construct elements from those sets, distilling them into his first release since 2021. "Dream Implosion" is a glitchy, tone-bending piece of electronic abstraction. In contrast, on "Subjects from the Past" Van Hoesen delivers a clattering rhythm bathed in dubby textures. "Purity Death Spiral" takes aim for the peak time jugular, with fractured percussive elements fused with a pumping, heads-down rhythm. "Vola Flash" maintains the same clubby focus, but with an atmospheric side to it. That sensibility is also audible on "Imposter", with icy synths underpinned by a gut busting sub-bass.

Review: As underground venues and spaces struggle to overcome the financial pressures exacted by coronavirus, many artists are responding to support them. In_vurt is a case in point; issued on Cassegrain's label, it sees a multitude of techno producers who have played at Vurt contribute tracks, with the proceeds of sales helping the Seoul venue. It's an impressive, 28-track collection, and features some of underground techno's most respected artists, including Answer Code Request, who drops the dreamy, breakbeat-led "No Comply 180", Artefakt's dubbed out tunnelling "Solstice" and the shimmering rhythms on BNJMN's "Overstated". These sit alongside more experimental tracks like Cio D'Or's glitchy "Permanent Key" and the droning, expansive "Further Movements Into Unknown Territories" from Peter Van Hoesen.

Review: If you were to take Peter Van Hoesen's career back a decade you would find him in the midst of breaking through with a wholly experimental sound taking in the functionality of booming, deep and dubby, industrial-laced techno. Best highlighted in his 2010 Entropic City album, and across the evolution of his Time To Express label, PVHs avant approach to techno music has slowly mutated into abstraction and a new kind of sophistication. The works and ideas presented here may well suggest a cache of music perhaps deemed too early and esoteric to release for public understanding at the time it was made, which makes the futuristic ears we're all fitted with now perfect to take this in for consumption. Skittering atmospherics, modular basslines, rhythms and undulating beats, to ambient melodies and broken drums are all inside and should appeal to fans of Sendai too.
