New State Of Consciousness (Oscar Mulero remix) - (6:43) 126 BPM
from $1.95
Review: The latest missive on Mind Trip is a tale of three radically different remixes. First up is Lucy. Increasingly, the Stroboscopic Artefacts boss is focusing his efforts on abstract composition and his take on "New State of Consciousness" is littered with wheezing vocal samples wiry percussive ticks and fuzzy chords, without losing the flow of the groove. By contrast, Oscar Mulero's take on "Iteration" is far more singular, with a linear rhythm led by droning tones and subtle, hissing hats, while his version of "Consciousness" follows a radically different approach. Hammering beats and cheese-wire percussive licks prevail as the Spanish producer leads the listener through a series of juggernaut build-ups and breakdowns.

Casus Belli - (6:46) 130 BPM Biggest-selling track on this release
from $1.95
Played by: S-File
Review: Juan-Pablo Pfirter is one of the most individualistic voices in modern underground techno and the latest release on his own label bears testament to this claim. It starts with the droning textures of "Otras Dimensiones", which swirls and lifts like fog on a wintry morning. The title track uses a similar sound design, but tacks it to hissing, bristling percussion and insistent pulses. Changing tact, "Technalog" and "Casus Belli" both represent a markedly different approach from the Argentinean artist. Industrial-strength rhythms, doubled-up claps and waves of buzzing analogue noise prevail on both tracks, which are far removed from the serene manner in which Message 1 began.

Closer To The Truth - (6:34) 129 BPM
from $1.95
Review: It feels like new school techno producer Pfirter has something to prove, namely that he isn't part of the increasingly one-dimensional, reverb-heavy, broken beat industrial set. With that in mind he delivers the title track, an abrasive, punishing workout that is led by grainy beats and dark keys. "Rige" is just as heavy but more streamlined as the Spanish artist lays down a harsh rhythm and malevolent blips, supported by doubled-up claps. Tensal's take on the title track is a more typical rolling groove, but he ends the EP with the choppy filers and heavy drums of "Closer to the Truth", which recalls the more imaginative end of 90s loop techno.

Review: Juan Pfirter drops another impressive release on his own MindTrip label. The release is bookended by two pieces of mesmerizing mood music - the gentle ambience of "La Sombra Del Objeto Recae Sobre El Yo" at the start and the frazzled sonics of 'You' at the end . More importantly though it showcases the Argentinean's ability to create peerless dance floor techno. From the tough percussive rhythms of "Octubre" to the tropical warbles and rolling clubby groove of "F Method" into the jacking gritty "Death of Mu" F Method is further proof that Pfirter is one of modern techno's finest talents.

Review: As "Rise of the White Dwarf", the opening track on Pfirter's latest release shows, the Argentinean artist isn't solely focused on the club environment. It's a neo-classical piece, led by stirring strings. By contrast, "Double Existence" sees Pfirter back on the dance floor, albeit in left of centre mode. The track's stepping rhythm, wooden percussion and understated bleeps makes for an unusual arrangement. In stark contrast, "They Want to Fool Us" is a tough, rolling groove that is led by tribal beats and layered chants. Completing this varied release is Stanislav Tolkachev's high-octane, insistent take on "Fool Us".

Review: The concept behind this series - according the label - is to unite some of the most challenging artists in techno and curate a series of 'mind altering' compositions. Job done: label boss Pfierter and Liebing's stark naked stomps conjure series drama as their loops manipulate introspectively. Further on Yuuki Sakai's "Ballat" takes a sheet metal beat and processes it through an industrial strength echo chamber with hugely hypnotic results, Obscure Shape's "Black In Black" pays homage to the Millsian techno schooling with a paranoid radar-like loop and Dax J's "Revelations" drives us deep into the audio abyss with a throbbing bass/kick combo and showstopping flurries of party percussion. From the lab to the club to deep inside your psyche, MindTrip live up to their name once again.

Review: The second split Mutable Minds release continues in the same mind-melting vein as the first instalment. Label owner Pfirter sets the tone with the distorted acid, pile-driving percussion and distorted kicks of "Anti Routine". On "Sleepwalker", newcomer Fixeer recalls the most visceral moments of early Planetary Assault Systems, as gained drums and busy layers of metallic percussion come together for an intense arrangement. Kuf & Dold's "Mint" ups the pace with a pounding rhythm track that resounds to doubled up claps, pounding 4/4s and gnarly riffs, while the most reserved contribution comes in the form of Jonas Kopp's dubbed out "Biorritmo".

Review: The latest release on Pfirter's label features the coming together of some like-minded artists as well as the occasional surprise. The MindTrip boss teams up with Par Grindvik for "Leave One", which fuses the South American's love of fluid, enveloping textures with the Scandinavian's knack of crafting precise, functional rhythms. Diego Amura takes the intensity levels up a few notches with the wild bleeps and sirens of "Flow", while Savas Pascalidis makes an unexpected appearance. Best known perhaps for his electronic, disco-infused tracks, "Silhouettes" is a heavier, austere affair. Fanon Flowers completes this steely, moody release with the outer space blips and driving minimalism of "Tejat Posterior".

Tommy Four Seven - "Funf" - (4:56) 131 BPM
from $1.95
Review: The latest release on Tommy Four Seven's label features tracks from the guests who performed at his night in Arena, Berlin back in February. It's a mixed bag. Amotik's "Sau" is a proper, 90s-influenced peak time affair - redolent of Luke Slater's infamous remix of "Forklift" its shrieking sirens unfolding over relentless kicks. Shlomo's "Golem" also plays out on the dance floor, although its sleek pulses and steely percussion are less intense than Amotik's contribution. The two other tracks, from the label owner and Pfirter, revolve around broken beats. Tommy's "Funf" is a dark, layered workout, while "Homeostasis" is less intense thanks to its subsonic bleeps, but those clanging drums lend it some serious weight.

Review: Has it been five years already? In 2009 Stroboscopic Artefacts revealed itself with label founder Lucy's Why Don't You Change // Dub Man Walking release. In the following years artists like Xhin and Dadub became label faithfuls while others like Perc, Pfirter and Donor helped Stroboscopic Artefacts develop into the techno power house it now is. The recent introduction of artists like Rrose, Lakker (and Eomac), Sendai and Donato Dozzy have further established the label's dominance. This first chapter of various artist EPs Stroboscopic Artefacts will release to celebrate five years of existence brings together the old with the new. Rrose delivers a typically droning "Drowned By Sight" which fans of Sandwell District will love, while Perc's "Tri-City" is a rolling barrage of stiff and rigid drums and industrial atmospheres. Pfirter delivers something more subdued and dubby than his normal peak time fare while Lakker's "Pier" is haunting as always.

Review: It sounds like there have been some interesting experiments going on in labs across Europe if this split release is anything to go by. Markus Suckut is first up with "Sarin", a comparatively restrained, shuffling techno workout. Jesse Jakob picks up the pace on "Black Bells", where menacing riffs unfold over an angular rhythm. Pfirter uses a similar approach on "Angular Momentum", but his interpretation is much more severe as screeching sounds and heavy, thunder claps prevail. The most intense contribution of all comes from Charlton, whose "The Quantum Complex" is based on high-paced, steely rhythms and bursts of firing percussion.
