Berlin based, born in New Zealand, Philippa started DJing in the halcyon days of the late 90s, an era ring fenced by Motorbass’s smoky ‘french touch’ deep house and the American overloads DJ Sneak and Derrick Carter - artists who were endlessly churning out grinding disco loops aimed at brutalising astute global dancefloors into pulverised messes. House music was by turns art based, intellectual and relentlessly fun/ctional.

These cutting-edge international sounds made their way to clubs in New Zealand where a young and impressionable Philippa earnestly lapped them up. Working by day in seminal Auckland record store BPM, nights she learnt to DJ in the city’s brilliant corners of sound. As a training ground there's nothing quite like the weekly residencies of local scenes: breeding grounds of talent where artists are nurtured and toughened up by the critical presence of week in / week out dancefloors, and that’s certainly what happened here. Philippa would go on to become a leading light in the New Zealand underground. By the time she left in 2013 she had headlined six national tours under her party banner Chicago Disco, won music industry awards and accolades, and hosted Friday Drive on the nation’s electronic music radio station George FM for seven years.

Curiosity, however, can be a bitch. Questions had been entering Philippa’s mind - were European dance floors really as intoxicating as they seemed from afar? What could she learn if she leapt from the safe waters of her natural home?

Moving to Berlin in 2013 perhaps inevitably meant that DJing took a back seat, and as such these years were difficult. With no production background to act as a business card, Philippa came to a vital realisation - that she could either “start again” and work her way up through the city’s innumerable clubs, or embrace a new era of learning and double down on music production. She chose the latter. Working by day teaching tertiary level students in an institution of arts and technology, Philippa spent weekends focused on learning a new craft - not one of rotating records, but one of synthesisers, samplers and sound design. Immersed in this world Philippa went to ground, emerging finally in 2019 with the birth of her record label At Peace - named so to honour what she’d given up by moving to the often brutal grey city that is Berlin, and the frame of mind she’d decided to adopt in response to those losses.

It was through the launch of this label that Philippa’s sound came to the attention of hugely respected UK house label Freerange. In the early days of the pandemic, label head Jimpster asked if she would consider submitting demos - and consequently Philippa’s Freerange EP “There’s A Ghost in My Synthesizer” was released in September 2022.
The record was well received in house music circles and was followed by another release in December 2023: Latent Magic.

Further to that Philippa’s Rainy Nights ep was released on London’s Slothboogie in June 2023 and was a big release internationally for the label.
2023 was also the year Philippa was asked to remix iconic New Zealand band Fat Freddy’s Drop track Bones, which came out in September; and her remix of classic house cut Roach Motel ‘The Night’ for the UK Faith Fanzine and Defected Records banner label Faith, came out early January 2024.

There's much more production work planned for release in 2024, including another EP for Slothboogie, due to drop early June.

Port Chalmers - (4:37) 123 BPM
Review: She may now be based in Berlin, but Philippa is a New Zealander through and through. To prove the point, she's named her latest EP in honour of Port Chalmers, a small coastal town on NZ's South Island. There's a genuine sunniness and breeziness to opener 'Better World', where gently lapping Rhodes motifs and disco-era vocal samples dance atop a pleasingly organic-sounding deep house groove. She opts for a more locked-in, tambourine-powered peak-time deep house sound on the woozy and typically sample-rich 'Run Away', before reaching for the Rhodes once more on the jazzy deep house loveliness of 'Lot To Learn'. As for the EP closing title track, it's a wonderfully warm and sun-soaked slab of daydreaming, string-drenched deep house excellence that sounds like a Kiwi take on Pepe Bradock classic 'Deep Burnt'.

Latent Magic EP

Latent Magic - (6:46) 125 BPM Hot
There It Is - (5:40) 124 BPM
Review: Kiwi house queen Philippa returns to Freerange Records - the label which released her fine debut EP in 2022 - following an equally inspired outing on Slothboogie earlier in the year. She begins in fine fashion with 'Hold', and slow building affair in which sparkling, sunrise-ready piano stabs and swirling synth strings rise above a jaunty, tactile bassline and unfussy deep house drums, before opting for a deliciously loved up vibe on the string-laden, life-affirming stomp of 'Latent Magic'. To round of a brilliant EP, the Berlin-based New Zealander serves up 'There It Is', where echoing vocal snippets and bold piano stabs ride a St Germain style jazz-house groove.

Review: SlothBoogie's 'Dancing With Friends' series, a compilation strand showcasing cuts from both label artists and invited guests, has firmly established itself as 'one to watch'. Happily, the third volume in the series is as on-point as its predecessors. There's much to admire across the 16 tracks on show, with our picks of a very strong bunch including the sun-soaked deep house heat of Philippa's sample-heavy 'Chet's Vibe', the bumpin', post-hip-house hedonism of 'Take Back' by Sudden Moves, the dream house-goes-Detroit techno hypnotism of Ruff Stuff's 'Stab Culture', the deep acid house excellence of Baby Rollen's 'Study in Serenity' and the throbbing excellence of Donald Dust's 'Aftercare'. Throw in killer cuts from a couple of better-known artists - see the contributions from Demuir and the Revenge - and you've got another genuinely must-check release.

Review: Last year, Berlin-based New Zealander Philippa made her production bow on Freerange after years building up a well-earned reputation as a fearsome house DJ. This follow-up for SlothBoogie is every bit as impressive as its predecessor. She starts in confident mood with 'Rainy Nights', a constantly building fusion of bluesy vocal samples, echo-laden electric piano motifs, bustling bass and St Germain-inspired house beats, before opting for a sound somewhere between Dave Lee and Soundstream on the similarly sample-rich 'Sneaking Out'. Even better is the inspired 'Come Rain Or Shine', where echoing vocal, orchestral and vocal samples ride a jazzy bassline and jazz-house beats, while 'Nothing To Lose' joins the dots between warming deep house and jazz-funk-flecked disco.

Review: Almost a decade ago, Philippa decided to decamp from her native New Zealand, where she was a well-known figure on the local house scene, to Berlin. It was during a trip to the German clubbing Mecca that Jimpster heard her productions, hence this first outing on his popular Freerange imprint. As label debuts go, it's a doozy, with the Kiwi producer confidently striding between classy, string-laden, smile-inducing post disco-house brilliance ('There's a Ghost in My Synthesizer'), deeper and more bass-heavy deep house loveliness (the sweeping synth sounds and reverb-laden vocal snippets of 'I Guess I Have Boy'), chunky funkiness (the tactile, classic house update that is 'Dimes') and effortlessly soulful and timeless goodness (the Mo Van Zandt hook-up 'Slow It Down', which is as colourful and spine-tingling as they come).

Review: To celebrate notching up ten years in the game, London blog and party-turned-record label SlothBoogie has decided to offer-up their most ambitious release to date: an epic collection of previously unheard cuts from a mixture of imprint regulars and like-minded friends. There's naturally plenty to set the pulse racing throughout, with highlights including the sparkling jazz-funk-meets-deep house sunshine of Levan's "U R Beautiful In The Face", the deep, breakbeat-driven dreaminess of Philippa's "That's What I Mean By Free", the piano solo-heavy disco-house bump of Leatherette's "Your Love", and the dub disco-meets-acid house heaviness of "Rewind Run" by Pablot. Throw in similarly impressive contributions from Kassian, Luvless, Casino Times and Soul Wun (the classic jazz-house of "Thank You, St Germain") and you have a must-have collection.
