Review: There's a hint in the title here, as theBasement Discos serve up a collection of 20 house tracks with the ivories firmly front and centre. But while the old Joanna might be the thread that ties it all together, there's still plenty of variety on offer, from sprightly jazz-house workouts like AFAMoo's 'The Art Of Jazz' to deep house jams like A Naranjo's 'What Lies To Head' and Foot-Loose's 'Weekend'-biting disco-houser 'LA Piano Mood'. It's not all nostalgic homages to the hands-in-the-air anthems of the early 90s, in other words - though naturally there are plenty of those as well, with Piem's '4Real' one clear standout in that department. Of course, if you're not a fan of piano-based house, it's probably not the album for you... otherwise the 'Paradise' part of the title is entirely justified, nuff said!

Review: The label's suffered a little from Man Utd Syndrome over the years but for me, you just can't fault a Toolroom comp: they always offer great VFM, and as quick bi-annual (or whatever) snapshots of 'where house is at right now', they're unbeatable. The headline for this installment is that, where the Toolroom story over the past few years has mostly been about label boss Mark Knight getting back in touch with his soulful roots, this set leans a little more to the tuff n' techy side. But with 50 full-length tracks to choose from, plus two hour-long DJ mixes - and with that M1 drop on Azete's 'Born Bad' worth the price of admission on its own! - you really can't go wrong here.

Review: 2020 has certainly shown the world that unless we make the necessary changes to our way of life and save the earth - we may very well have no other option but to Repopulate Mars! And if you think our observations there are 'deep' well.. you'd best get a load of the tracks on 'Repopulate Stars Summer Jams'. Highlights not limited to: the sultry mood music of John Summit & Dead Space's "Dreams", Rone White & Rowen Clark bringing the afterhours minimal funk on "The Whistle", as does Miami's Kristi Yang on "Touch Me With Your Mind" (feat Ms.Chin). Review: Now in its third year, Crosstown Rebels' annual "Spirits" compilation does a great job of championing floor-friendly fare from a mixture of up-and-coming and established artists. As you'd expect volume three boasts some suitably sizable cuts, all of which have been extensively road-tested by CR boss Damian Lazarus. We're particularly enjoying the smoky Afro-tech shuffle of Dennis Cruz's "Mother Earth", the bongo-laden percussive bounce of Piem's "Freak Out, the bass-heavy throb of Harry Romero's similarly drum-laden "It's You" and the druggy early morning tech-house hypnotism of Lazarus's "Ergot", though there's plenty more must-check gems scattered throughout the compilation.

Review: We're not sure if Lee Foss runs this operation from the sunny shores of Los Angeles or the barren landscape of the label's namesake - but this latest compilation is sure to bring the summer heat wherever it's played! Repopulate Stars Summer Jams features a who's who of international tech house at present, with a wealth of peak time and main room material not limited to: the ascendant UK star Jacky (with Skapes) on the tough rolling groove of "All My Life", the ghetto house referencing trippy banger by Berliners Mat.Joe that is "Sayhoo", through to rising Spaniard LumaK's gutsy stomper "Papparazzi" and Jay De Lys' infectious and potential anthem "Bad Soul" - which sees the Argentinean in fine form.

Review: It is that time of year again and Hot Since 82's Knee Deep In Sound is back with some treats that are going to be unleashed at the Mexican super-festival this year. Iman Habib aka Habischman is a super talented production phenomenon that brings you "Moan", a driving progressive house style journey much like the following slow burner by James Grow entitled "Te Mar". Piem & Spencer K's "Lowrider" is more typical faire of the label on this bouncy and rolling tech house groover that will rock White Isle punters this year too. Druggy afterhours minimal is covered courtesy of Veerus & Maxie Devine who serve up the rather Mobilee-ish "The Church".
