Review: Toolroom Live 01 is a behemoth. At 61 tracks large, inclusive of three continues DJ mixes, this new concept by Toolroom, as they say, is to highlight key artists, present new tracks, and give their fans a taste of the live experience. On here there's music from Harvey Mckay, Gary Beck and Maison Sky, to Bat For Lashes, Hot Since 82 and label owner Mark Knight, and if you're looking to grasp the Toolroom Live concept (and other oddities you might not expect), while getting some bang from your buck, this release is a well informed start.

Review: This summer, Steve Lawler is hosting a midweek party at Sankeys Ibiza under the Viva Warriors title. Here, he joins forces with fellow resident Darius Syrossian to lay down a two disc mix set that touches on all of his usual inspirations. That means an atmospheric trawl through nuggety darkroom house, tribal flavours and murky tech-house, with additional helpings of basement-baiting New York deepness and European fluidity. In truth, Viva Warriors is arguably more fun and upbeat than many of Lawler's recent mixes, suggesting a new-found love of reaching out for the lasers and hip-wigglin' groovery. Maybe that's Syrossian's influence; either way, it makes for an enjoyable two-disc mix-up.

Review: House DJs MYNC offer an exhaustive overview of the tracks that rocked the long-running White Island venue this summer. In the soulful corner, there's the Maxi Soundsystem take on Boris Dlugosch's "Look Around You". Featuring Roisin Murphy on vocals, it does a lot to sweep away the rainy autumn blues. Ten Walls deliver the trancey goods in the shape of "Gotham", which revolves around a belching bassline, but the most notable aspect of Ibiza 2013 is the way minimal producers have come into the house fold. Loco Dice borrows a prog house bassline for 'Detox' and Luciano's "Rise Of The Angel" - remixed here by Andrea Oliva - is a piano-led, wide eyed deep anthem.

Review: Yassine Ben Achour and Martin Buttrich founded Desolat on the success of their now legendary Loco Dice project eight years ago in Brooklyn; just like it says on the tin. Based in Achour's home turf of Dusseldorf ever since, the label has gone on to launch the careers of tech house heroes such as Danny Ocean, Patrick Specke and Guti to name but a few. Their next volume of Desolat X will follow in suit, not only celebrating another successful year in the business but championing the new breed and the exception of a couple of legends, actually. Firstly, west coast tech house royalty Halo Varga teams up with the next generation of California's scene in the form of Harvard Bass on the rolling stomper "Swing City", as well as Germany's The Timewriter who offers up the deep and slinky vocal led groove of "Tenderness". Other highlights include Milan's Proudly People who get a bit of help from Alex Ground on the DJ Rush sounding "Lie To Kick It", Circus Liverpool resident Lewis Boardman with the druggy main room headrush that is "Goblin" and American Caleb Calloway's fine effort "Avion" offering up a bit of smooth tribal house.

Review: Italian club house producer Pirupa has had a crazy couple of years - getting played by the likes of Hawtin, Tong, Tenaglia, Dubfire, Zabiela and others and playing some of the biggest global hotspots with his brand of mainroom/funky. This new release on Rebirth shows what a talent he is - hooked up with Berlin-based vocalist Bajka, he creates a storming yet subtle tech-beauty, with rounded bass and softly-focused acoustic guitar textures shimmering in the background. Youandme drops a deep remix, while Gregorythyme gets into dubby disco territory on his version.

Review: Rebirth reach number eight in their long running series of essential label cuts, and on paper it looks to be the best yet. Thankfully, the music inside also lives up to our expectations, with Morgan Geist's remix of Bocca Grande's "Procedure 2011 (reprise) offering an early highlight, with its satisfyingly squelchy bassline and percussive touches that have made Geist one of New York's most in demand producers over the last ten years. Other highlights include Todd Terry's reworking of Ellesse's "New York Boy", which brings some classic 90s flavour to the compilation, Tevo Howard, whose Chicago prowess is displayed finely in the dusky FM coated "Crazy Love", and the Jacques Renault remix of "Manetta's Fine Food", subtly bringing in numerous melodic elements over its bumping, clattering rhythms.

Review: The latest chapter in Lee Foss' new label sees him showcase some fast rising talent. DeMarzo's "Dance Naked" is a busy, rolling house track, populated with dark rave riffs, mysterious vocal samples and rolling snares. Next up is Raffa FL's "Loco", which ups the tempo to the sound of a rolling groove and a snaking bass. Once again though, the arranging is complex and a 'loco' vocal sample and tropical musical elements unfold over the tribal, drum-heavy groove. Mirko Di Florio's "Say What" marks a return to a more conventional house sound, but clearly this is a release focused on experimentation, as the hoover bass and chopped up vocals of Pirupa's "Last Minute" demonstrates.

Review: Under No Illusion is a label owned and run by Ki Creighton: who is no stranger to house music. He has been on the scene since the early 90s and has been majorly influencing matters both north and south of the border. As a producer / DJ and label boss at the aforementioned, as well as one half of Carlisle based Superbrand Uber he is crtainly a busy man. Based in Annan (south west Scotland), this year will see Ki release tracks on his own UNI imprint as well as Yousef's highly regarded Circus Recordings. Highlights on the label's second various artists compilation include: Italian Pirupa's rolling peak time tech house monster "Everyday" and Lost head honchos Leftwing & Kody who bring the goods as always on their jacking killer "Drum Roll" that really lives up to its name. Expecting to be hearing these jams on The White Isle this summer.
