Review: German label Affin impresses with a release that showcases a deeper but darker take on techno music. Danish DJ Patrick Bateman kicks off the release with Woo York's remix of "Oxo 2". Centred on deep, layered chords, it unfolds gradually over a rolling, dubby groove and provides a taster for what is to come. The Joachim Spieth remix of Platypus' "The Streets Have A Voice" follows Bateman's contribution, leaning towards a deep but more ominous approach, while Viktoria Rebeka's "Radiation Menu" ramps up the intensity thanks to a dark, bass groove and an ominous swarm of bleeps. Finally, Mattias Fridell's "Life Recycling Law" is slightly more melodic thanks to its catchy hooks, but the same textured, menacing feeling prevails.

Sugahbeeb - (4:49) 140 BPM

Review: For this one, the incredibly consistent sounds of Dubtribu team up with the super conceptual production prowess of Platypus for an explosive two track release, as always, pushing the dubstep boundaries as far as they can be pushed. The title track 'See Your Face' is a lot slower than 140, but through the haunting lead vocal, intensely spooky atmospherics and grinding bass synths it packs just as much energy. We speed right up as we flip over to the B-side 'Sugahbeeb'. This one is experimental as ever, with unpredictable melodic staps flying around atop hypnotic LFOs and punchy drum arrangements.

Another Planet - (5:01) 140 BPM

Review: Dubstep as a genre is at the forefront of the underground music scene so far in 2018, and Version Collective are certainly one of the driving forces behind that. For the title track we hear a combination of rolling subs, electronic oscillations and a chilling vocal presence, driving the entire track forward. Following this 'Another Planet' is a more outwardly evil creation, focussing on erratic synth patterns and more rounded bass patterns. That spooky vocal addition returns to 'One Of Us' which works deeply with growling bass synths and eerie back laying atmospherics. The EP is then rounded off smoothly with the more dubwise inspired sounds of Mandalay. Great stuff!
