Review: It's been over 15 years since this writer was one of 100 or so who gathered in a sweaty, low-raftered Amsterdam basement to witness the live debut of Dutch funk and disco hopefuls Kraak & Smaak. Since then, the young pretenders have gone on to become true elder statesmen of the scene - which is another way of saying that you just KNOW the quality bar on this latest collection of contemporary disco, funk and boogie grooves is going to be set high. There's no room here to go into all 24 tracks one-by-one, but with contributions from the likes of Ben Gomori, Flevans and Hotmood alongside a host of more up-and-coming names, suffice to say lovers of the aforementioned styles will not be in the least bit disappointed.

Review: A round of applause for Dave Harvey's Futureboogie label, which is closing its doors after a decade in which it's releases got stronger and more varied year on year. This superb compilation acts as the imprint's final testament, offering no less than 20 previously unheard nuggets from the Bristol-based imprint's nearest and dearest. Given the wealth of high-grade material on show, singling out highlights is tough, but our current favourites include the echoing,'80s alternative pop-meets-proto house dubbiness of Tech Support's 'Writers Block', the alien synths, glassy-eyed stabs and bustling electro drums of Warehouse Preservation Society's 'Ron's House', the kaleidoscopic house psychedelia of Manami's 'Nacros.Is', the bleeping, drug-fuelled oddness of Chez De Milo's 'Need Someone' and the breakbeat-acid insanity of Hard Ton's 'Don't Believe The Hype'.

Review: Releases on Canada's Multi Culti have come from artists as diverse as Zongamin, Red Axes and Jagwar Ma, but generally speaking electronic music from the more experimental/leftfield side is their stock-in-trade, and such is the case on this five-track V/A. Clear cosmic/Italo disco influences have landed the EP on this page but there are hints too of everything from dub (see Hermetics & Hannah Lee's 'Lux Naturae') to Indian/Middle Eastern music (check out Ponty Mython's hypnotic 'Pinto La Meah'), while special mention must be made of Magic Pirate's closer - we're just gonna go right ahead and love any track called 'Make Me A Jazz Coffee' on principle!

Review: As its' rather matter-or-fact title makes clear, this 15-track opus gathers together some of the finest remixes released on Dirt Crew Recordings to date. It's well worth a listen, featuring as it does an attractive mix of loopy, bass-heavy hedonism (Nachtbraker reworking The Revenge), sumptuous NYC deep house warmth (the legendary Kerri Chandler adding a chunky new spin to Dam Swindle's Mayer Hawthorne hook-up), analogue-rich hypnotism (Mark E re-imagining Chymera), rushing brilliance (Strip Steve flipping Lorenz Rhode), jazz-house-goes-hip-house (Fouk re-framing A Bunch of Guys) and much more besides. We're particularly fond of the remixes by Morning Factory, Art of Tones and Jesse Futerman, though the quality and variety is so good throughout that picking out highlights is genuinely difficult.

Review: Last year, Kapote joined forces with regular home Toy Tonics to release Teutonik Disaster, a compilation of his own re-edits of late '70s and early '80s, "German new wave funk". 12 months on he returns to the same label with a new collection, Mushroom House, which boasts a mixture of Balearic, Afro and cosmic-influenced cuts from the imprint's vaults. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, from the rubbery, dubbed-out Afro-house bounce of Ponty Mython's 'Slippin' Into Darkness' and the dusty Afro-disco haziness of Munk's 'Nigerian Jam', to the intergalactic electro trip of the Asphodells' killer remix of 'The Circular Path' by the Deadstock 33s, and the deep space Italo-disco chug of Baldelli's sparkling 'Phobos (2020 Version)'.

Review: Under the Ponty Mython alias, experienced producer Alexander Pletnev can usually be relied upon to hit the spot. Happily, we can confirm that his latest EP - his second for Bristol's Futureboogie Recordings - is another strong effort. He begins by wrapping some alien sounding synthesizer lead lines and quirky electronic ticks around a swinging, breakbeat influenced groove on "Speak For Yourself", before repeating the trick on the more bass-heavy and tropical tinged "Barocco". EP highlight "Jealous Lover" is a wonderfully bleeping, analogue-rich chunk of intergalactic deep house, while Jonny Rock's remix of the same track is a sweaty, out-of-this-world party jam laden with dub delay, analogue dub bass and trippy effects.

Review: On their Deep Love 2018 compilation, you'll find label stalwarts to newcomers alike for respected Berlin imprint Dirt Crew. Their seventh compilation in the series, the label claims that it is the most complete in terms of sound and flow - and will blend in perfectly with that laid back, late summer mood. From moments of dusty and chilled-out deepness courtesy of Lorenz Rhode or Felix Leifur, lo-slung acid jams like Ponty Mython's "It's All Understood" or funked-up disco house like Frenchman S3A's "Modern Soul". Elsewhere, we have got the kind of slinky and sensual tech-house you've come to expect from the label - best exemplified by Canadian Dan Only or Jaxx Madicine's particularly sublime "Blue Bird". Essentially, it's more of the fine quality you've come to expect from this house music institution.

Review: Alexander Pletnev aka Ponty Mython is originally from Russia, but is currently settled in Vilnius, Lithuania. His releases have popped up on top labels such as Dirt Crew, Nurvous and Quintessentials in recent times - and he can now add Bristolian tastemakers Futureboogie to that list. His sleek nu-disco style of groove as heard on "Pink Tango" is a neon-lit, lo-slung balearic groove for Summertime cocktail parties. Injecting more of an '80's flavour into it is Fabrizio Mammarella (one half of Black Spuma with Lauer) working his retroverted magic as always and jam packed full of vintage synth presents. From something different, Pletnev offers up the tropical vibe of "Appreciate It While It's Not Too Late" (original mix) and its mesmerising marimba action that makes you wish you had a hammock and Pina Colada in hand.

Review: Label-hopping producer Alexander Pletnev AKA Ponty Mython continues to add new imprints to his bulging CV. On this first EP for the admirable Omena imprint, he also offers more signs of artistic development. While the low-slung, tribal-influenced deep house heaviness of "Panta Mei" (which, incidentally, utilizes some whistling melodies) and cheerier deep house bubbler "Coconut Scarface" contain aural nods to his previous work, title track "Universe of Pops" is an impressive departure from the script. Sitting somewhere between pos-punk era electro, industrial funk, Afro-tech, 8-bit videogame soundtracks and instrumental Arabic synth-pop, it's easily one of Pletnev's most arresting and exciting tracks to date.

Review: As you'd expect, the latest volume in Dirt Crew's regular Deep Love compilation series features far more hits than misses. As with previous installments in the long-running series, Deep Love 2017 is mostly made up of previously unheard material from label favourites and like-minded guest producers. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, and include the horn-laden Latin disco-house brilliance of M.ono's "Jamas", the jazzy, Compost style broken beat deepness of Felix Leifur's "Record", the loved-up shuffle of Loz Goddard's impeccable "Now is Where We Are" and a touch of 21st century jazz-funk/deep house fusion by Ponty Mython. Also worth a listen is the contribution from Sheffield beat-smith Thatmanmonkz, who once again delivers a hazy chunk of ultra-deep, soul-flecked dancefloor bliss.

Review: Ponty Mython is a good fit for Better Listen, a fledgling deep house label that has so far delivered the goods. The imprint's love of jazzy, musically rich workouts built around dusty old samples matches the Russian's long-held production ethos and shines through loud and clear on quirky, marimba-laden opener "Checkmate". No doubt the Better Listen crew was also delighted with the rolling, life-affirming vibe of "Ekueseni", a kind of Afro-disco/deep house hybrid that's as atmospheric and groovy as they come, and the jaunty, guitar solo-laden cheeriness of Afrobeat-goes-house shuffler "Breakchu". We'd also wager that they signed the EP based on the brilliant title track, which is little less than a hedonistic chunk of spiraling disco-house brilliance.

Review: Long established label-hopper Ponty Mython (AKA Russian producer Alexander Pietnev) adds another imprint to his resume via a rock solid four-tracker for 20:20 Vision offshoot Fina. He begins with "Why Can't We Both Be Right", a bustling but groovy deep house cut full of woozy vocal samples and crunchy drum machine handclaps, before jazzing up the beats and reaching for the swirling orchestral samples on lolloping groover "Morning in a Boing 747". EP highlight "Rejoice" sees him successfully revisit his disco-house roots, while Soul of Hex hook-up "Surf Mode" sits somewhere between humid afternoon disco and chunky deep house.

Review: Alexander Pietnev aka Ponty Mython, is originally from Russia but is currently settled in Vilnius, Lithuania. He had his very first release in 2012 on Beats Delivery which gave a solid impression of what was to come. He went on with outings on Tusk Wax, Arma, Dirt Crew and of course Quintessentials. This was originally released on the Quintessentials 50 compilation; it's "Grooff Machine" and it gets some remix treatment from some more 'dope grooffs' (label's words, not ours!). Chicago hotshot Chrissy (The Nite Owl Diner, Classic, Razor n' Tape) throws some sick and gnarly 303 acid business over this loopy disco number. His Mexican buddy Soul of Hex (who he's collaborated with previously) delivers a deep and lo-slung rendition too, just the way you like it!

Review: Toy Tonics' Mushroom House series has so far sparkled, delivering a series of "weirdo house" inspired EPs full of tracks that look to "ethno, Afro and psychedelic" music for inspiration. Each of the producers involved in this third installment predictably hit the mark, with Ponty Mython's trippy opener - think rolling tropical deep house with hallucinatory flourishes - expertly setting the tone. Fast-rising producer Kiwi steals the show with a low-slung fusion of dub disco and smacked out Afro-house, while the Barking Dogs join forces with Tom Trago for a seductive trip into cosmic deep house territory. Red Axes also do a terrific job turning Munk's "The Bolero Brunel" into a hazy chunk of nu-disco psychedelia.

Review: This follow-up to last year's Gentleman Cuts EP is a significant release for Quintessentials. It's their 50th release in total, and contains material from some very familiar faces. There's Nachtbraker, whose "Bronco" is a lesson in fuzzy electro/deep house fusion, and Ponty Mython, who predictably steals the show with a rock solid chunk of funky disco/deep house fusion. Similarly, impressive is the contribution from rising star Soul of Hex, with the Mexican brilliantly joining the dots between punk-funk, dub disco, punk-funk and deep house on the sweaty dancefloor hustle of "Body Shine". Those looking for more straightforward deep house flavours should check the Andres style dusty beats, soulful vocal samples and chiming melodies of Mat Chiavorolo's "Breakfast At Mat's Bar".

Review: Congratulations to Germany's Dirt Crew Recordings, which marks a century of releases with a celebratory volume of the popular Deep Love compilation series. As befits the momentous occasion, the 11 tracks on offer are all exclusive and previously unreleased. Predictably, there's plenty to enjoy, from the dusty, crackly deep house warmth of Felix Leifur's "Feels Like", and classic U.S garage swing of Ponty Mython's "New York, New York", to the sweet, jazz-flecked haziness of Harry Wolfman's "Rainbow Set", and Huerta's dreamy, glassy-eyed Balearic deep house cut, "Blvrd". Throw in fine contributions from big hitters Detroit Swindle, Nachtbraker and The Revenge, and you have an undeniably essential collection.

Review: According to those behind the label, Toy Tonics' Mushroom House compilation was inspired by "the new wave of weirdo house" that's inspired by "ethno, Afro and psychedelic music". The collection's 15 tracks include a swathe of new or previously unheard cuts from the likes of Auntie Flo, Daniel Avery & Justin Robertson, Daniel Haaksman, Hyenah and Drrrtyhaze. With such a strong line-up, it's no surprise that the music is uniformly excellent. Highlights include, but are not limited to, DJ Koze's superb Hudson River Dub of WhoMadeWho's eccentric "Keep Me In My Plane", the epic build-ups and trippy, dubbed-out riffs of Munk and Rebolledo's "Surf Smurf", and the psychedelic acid attack of Massimiliano Pagliara's remix of Barotti's "She Once Knew".

Review: Complete with superhero comic book cover art, Quartet Series go on to explain that for the second outing in their Series, French fry and Parisian Concrete resident S3A (Sampling As An Art, Faces) infuses the good guys with some positive energy. They're not wrong; this one is reminiscent of MCDE's Raw Cuts series; pure disco cut-up goodness. Ponty Mython's "Lovin' You Is A Pleasure" goes for more of the tropical, low-slung house vibe to fuel exotic daydream fantasies while Newcastle's NY*AK does slo-mo house good a proper covered in the right amount of dust and smokiness.

Review: Delusions of Grandeur are doing a great job marking their 50th release. This second celebratory EP features four more previously unreleased gems from label artists past and present. New York veteran Son of Sound kicks things off with the driving, '90s New Jersey garage influenced pump of "Under The Son", before Sebastien Vorhaus and Ponty Mython join forces on the Theo Parrish influenced, deep jazz-house wiggle of "I'm The Slime". Dave Pezzner dons the Zepp001 guise for the first time in five years and serves up a jazzy nu-disco/deep house fusion (the deliciously tactile "Enemy"), before Norm De Plume closes proceedings with the warm-and-loose, jazz-funk influenced deep house cut "Building Bridges".

Review: Having graduated from loopy disco-house edits to groovy deep house via releases on Quintessentials and Dirt Crew, Russia's Ponty Mython pops up on Stockholm's soul-inspired Swedish Brandy Productions. The EP's five tracks - including rubbery, jazz-inspired digital bonus "In The Hood" - touch on a variety of subtle deep house flavours, whilst retaining the required warmth and ear-pleasing musicality. Highlights are plentiful, from the zoned-out soul samples and cosmic chords of "Keep On Using Me" and sparkling "New Toys", to the straight-up, deep dancefloor bump of opener "I Wish". He even finds time to doff a cap to rave-era Chicago house, working bold stabs around a jazzy deep house groove on "Holly FM".

Review: Lithuania-based Russian Ponty Mython has quietly been building an impressive discography over the last few years, with releases on No More Hits, Royal B-Sides and Quintessentials emphasizing his growing credentials. Here he pops up on Dirt Crew with an impressive EP of loose, winding and spacey deep house/future disco fusion. "Apple Arp" sounds like Floating Points jamming with Todd Terje and Axel Boman, while "Mila, It's Not Over" fixes stargazing electronics and hazy deep house chords to a fluid, jazz-flecked groove. Elsewhere, there's a classic, Nu Groove era deep house feel about "Narcolepsy", and Paulette feels like an aural tribute to some chilly Eastern European sunrise. The sweet, disco-influenced melodiousness of "Face Down", a hook-up with Sebastien Vorhaus, is also pretty tasty.

Review: Yam Who is a man who is on a mission to uncover the coolest cult re-edit guys around and make sure the public hear them. This is usually through his own ISM imprint and it's also usually via the medium of the EP. Here, though he's gone all out to present this huge compilation album, bursting with party goodness, and boasting 24 tracks. Highlights include the '80s Child's rework of power-snare soul anthem "Let Me Be The One", the neon glow of arpeggiated synth boogie gem "Jeckermich" and Ron Basejam's deep and sensuous take on the sultry electro-soul of "Changes".

Review: Many happy returns to Germany's Dirt Crew Recordings imprint, which this year celebrates a decade of deep and tech-house releases. For this celebratory collection, they've decided to take a slightly different approach, eschewing label classics and forgotten gems in favour of new cuts from familiar and lesser-known artists. There's naturally much to admire, from the heavy, Soundstream-do-deep house loopiness of Yosa's "Love Me" and the surging deep house funk of Timothy Blake's "The Town is Quiet", to the woozy, Ame-ish rush of Matt Masters' "6&3 Twos". Tigerskin does his bit for the label's old guard with "Ad Lib Robot", a bouncy, soul-flecked acid jam that's one of the compilation's genuine highlights.

Review: If you're going to launch a record label, it's vital to hit the ground running. This is what the Russian duo behind the Beats Delivery label have done with this first EP. Designed to showcase the emerging deep house scene in St Petersburg, it casually flits between shuffling goodness and eyes-shut groovery. The St Petersburg Disco Spin Club's sub-heavy "Like A Movie Star" takes top billing - not least for its curious combination of bass and cut-up sample magic - but there's little in the way of filler. Krill Tipo's dense, off-kilter "Let Me In" is also excellent, while Ponty Mython's chiming "First Date" should be essential listening, too.

Review: Russian spoonerism-turned-producer Ponty Mython has slowly been building his profile via a series of releases and collaborations that sit somewhere between classic deep house, acid, electrofunk and shiny nu-disco. This EP for Skycreaker is probably his strongest release to date, thanks in no small part to comfortable head-nodding grooves of warm house opener "Simple Questions". There are other attractions, though. "Take More Lessons" bounces around impressively, "Don't Disturb Jackson" sounds like a Russian take on Julio Bashmore and Ejeca turns the title track into a sub-heavy future garage/ghetto-house swinger.
