Review: Wrapping up a serious year of heat, Hype's Playaz look back over their many releases of 2021 and brings them altogether in one place for those who missed out on the label's many big bruisers, bumpers and thumpers. Ranging from Xtrah's trippy, leftfield 'Droplets' to straight-up face-melters like Spaow's 'Amd Planet' with a whole range of fire in between from some of the label's (and the scene's) biggest and most respected names like Taxman, Voltage, Limited, Dunk and of course the mighty DJ Hazard, it's a pretty forthright reminder of just how much clout and musical muscle the longstanding label has - even when half the year was spent with the clubs and raves closed. Playaz ain't playing around!

Review: One of Potential Badboy's absolute classic tracks is being given the remix treatment by one of the best rolling badboys in the game - L-Side. The Brazilian has historically worked mostly over on V Recordings, but this time he's banging out the goods on Playaz, and what a set of tools he has to work with. MC Fats and Yush deal the vocal magic on 'Girlz' in a way that must be a dream to produce, and the 'Intro Remix' lays their work down over a diving, sub-heavy concoction of a beat that more than does the original justice. The flip is similar, with barking stab of a bass note that moves with gruff authority - wicked stuff.

Review: Potential Badboy is one of Playaz's longest serving roster legends, the man behind 'You're Mine' and someone who always injects a refreshing mix of reggae infused dancefloor destruction into any dancefloor or release. That's exactly what he's done here with Bashy/Brederin, and his ability to span a mix of styles is clear in the two extra versions of each tune, which add a really nice element of variation. We love this format almost as much as we like the music itself.

Now come the remixes, versions and variations, and there are a fair few to pick from... Tyke gets busy with a hornet's nest style bass stepper, complete with a vocal-free dub twist. Review: Jungle veteran Potential Badboy has been operating professionally longer than many of us have been out of school (or even short trousers / the womb) After a brief hiatus from the release world, he's come back all bass guns blazing with a skank-packed homage to soundsystem culture. From the melodica tooting "Beat Of The Ghetto" to the rifle drum charm and sensuous harmonies of "Hot In Here" to the leaner steps of "Sound Boy" and MC Fats' sugar-coated "Gimme The Rhythm", this is the definition of 'all killer / no filler'. It's also the definition of a broad-screened, dynamically arranged D&B album that works just as well as a complete listening experience as it does a collection of dancefloor heaters. Nothing potential about it; this is the real deal.

Review: D&B veteran Potential Badboy is back on Jekyll & Hyde and he's got his long-term associate, Junior Dangerous in tow. Things actually begin with the surprisingly moombahton influenced "Cyant Stop (VIP)". It's back to a more familiar, perky Drum and Bass sound on "Dry Up Ya Tears", while the bass goes deep and things get pleasingly dark on "Hands In The Air". Finally things end with the epic and anthemic riddims of "Karma".

Review: Playaz just keep on bringing the mayhem and the fourth installment of the already epic "Flavours EP" is no exception to the rule. Compiled of six superlative bangers from artists as wide ranging as Majistrate, Shimah, Optiv & BTK, Annix, Potential Badboy and Need For Mirrors, variety is the spice of life here. First up is "Losing Control (feat. Alicia King)" by Majistrate which ups the raw, rugged jump up flavours with jarring metallic synth work; next we have Shimah's "Shadow Of The Ba" with its uplifting trance-like synths and tense, ticking patterns. Then onwards through Optiv & BTK's "Feelings" it's a neuro-infused ruckus until we reach Annix's "Late Maoeuvere". Potential Badboy is up to his usual tricks in his VIP of "Sound A Sound" before Need For Mirrors bring the EP to a classy close in the rolling "Albatross".

Review: Bringing together a bunch of hot talent new and old, Hype and Pascal bring us the second instalment of their Flavours EP to add some warmth to these cold winter days. First up is a VIP of ubiquitous anthem "Tommorow's Another Day" - the track which broke the young Belgian in '09. Next is a collab from Wickaman, Hoodlum and Mavrik - "Na Fool Me" with its twisted up ragga lyrics, jungle flavours, it really packs a punch. Potential Badboy's ""Can't Stop Me (feat. Junior Danger)" is another Serial Killaz style outing, with rousing lyrics, grouchy bass and clapping drums. Shimah shakes things up with his "Electro Step" and Sub Zero's attempt at subtle is remarkable, before Erb N Dub & Legacy round things off with the dancefloor destroyer "Alaska".

Review: The proud owner of what is undoubtedly one of the best artist names in D&B, Potential Badboy returns with a VIP EP jam-packed full of old jungle flavours, classic old skool styles and lush riddims. "Off Road" kicks things off with a bleepy melody, ragga call to "listen" and a lilting, vocal-led main tune with dragging b-line. "Girlz" pairs a lively, skittish intro with more serious main part full of pummelling drums and yawning subs. "Sun Is Shining Bright" keeps the soaring jungle flavours alive, VIP-ed up to the max, before "I Choose You" (VIP Mimixx) completes the EP with an instrumental flourish, curt drum break and raw edge.

Review: Having been around since the early days of jungle in '92, Potential Badboy makes a welcome return on Hype & Pascal's seminal Ganja Records. Teaming up with long-term collaborator Junior Dangerous for the two tracks, Potential Badboy takes things back to the old skool in title track "Lock Em Off", which is all ragga tinged vocal, dancehall flavours and lively riddims, full of snapping snares, simple melodies and crisp breaks. Accompanying this is "The Real" which kicks off with a series of disorientating atmospheric sweeps, threatening drum kicks and reverberating vocals. The track swiftly falls into an ominous stepper with saw-tooth bass for extra grit and grizzle. Awesome!
