Review: Next up on Hypnosis, a very relevant collection of mind-bending marchers, as Pugilist arrives to deliver something truly unique across four thought-provoking originals. We firstly swim headfirst into the sonic foliage of 'Vintage', a swampy sweeper, focussing on bulbous bass crunches and eerie percussive backdrops, before the Tempa-sounding drum taps and sub warbles of 'Wistful' move smartly into the field. Next, the sharp snare twitches an ethereal pad textures of 'Be Humble' arrive with a slightly different feeling from anything on the EP so far, followed by potent closer in 'Amethyst', again seeling the nostalgic feeling that's been right at the heart of this project from start to finish.

Review: The Modern Hypnosis crew have pulled together a very excitable collective here, welcoming a fiery combination to explore the more abstract realms of modern UKG. First up is Pugilist, a veteran of the unknown who unloads a futuristic drift through space pad textures and glittering percussive taps in 'Flip Trix', setting the tone perfectly right from the jump. Next, 'Stopper Knot' gives us another switch up with Henry Greeleaf's production diving into a haunted realm of spooky synth drones and distant drum pumps, with Ebb then diving back into a seriously grimey approach on 'GTAM', exploring square wave switch ups and old school drum slaps for a vibrant closer.

Review: For the next edition of Banoffee Pies, Pugilist leaps out with give tracks of drum-heavy abandon, launching with the breaks-laced 'Deja Vu', dipped in warm chord progressions and sweeping harmonics above, before we here 'Future Retro' rework a dubwise vocal line into a nostalgic hardcore epic. Next, 'Static' arrives right on cue with a bubbling display of Amazonian drum rhythms and floating atmospherics, with the industrial drum switches and moogy synth pulses of 'Sky Blue' following closely behind. This project is a fantastic look into the varying states of Pugilist's instrumental influences, with the final track 'Illumination' exploring the more dancefloor orientated side of his spectrum, combining sweeping synth lines and shuffling 2-step drums for a perfect finale.

Review: Developing its roster over the last few years DEXT Recordings has curated a discography worth talking about with a bend of artists ranging from Special Request, Nightwave and Jerome Hill to Mark Broom and Dead Man's Chest collaborations. For DEXT's first release in 2020 it does the same, pitching legends of the scene like Commix and Appleblim alongside new school mates like Pugilist and Otik. Raw beats find themselves eventually masked by swathes of delay and melody in Appleblims' 'Hydrothermal Vents" with Commixx turning in a staccato loop hovering somewhere in that grey zone between drum and bass and techno. Deep, reverberating two-step and jungle vibes outta Pugilist with "Eclipse" (tip!) with some colourful dub and melodic beat scene loops oozing between the dubstep of "Apollon".

Review: It's time to enter into depths unknown here as we join Pugilist and the Trusik Recordings camp for a journey through sound across their brand new link up project, the 'Chrysalis' EP. The title track is a 4x4 roller, packed with dubby energy and unpredictable drum switches, leading into some incredible processing work as the twisted rhythms of 'Truncated Kicks' take a hold. Next, the journey takes another interesting weave as the rolling kick leads and chirpy high end percussive patterns of 'Reformation' leap into life, before we finish up with a splash on 'Pheromone'.

Review: Melbourne's own Pugilist makes a spectacular return to the Artikal Music imprint with a belter of a 3 tracker, showcasing everything his sound is about. The title track "Saturn" is a dubwise experiment, focussing on smooth subs and epic delays. The next track "Solaris" follows on a similar vibe, bringing more percussive elements into the mix along with more rapid fire drum arrangements. We round up with the amphibious vibes "Outback" which utilizes didgeridoos and rumbling bass tones to create a swampy atmosphere from the off.

Today we're inspecting the construction site of Artikal Music UK's next project. Founder J:Kenzo employed eleven professional and highly skilled architects to carefully design, build and create a handcrafted compilation full of music he admires. As J:Kenzo explains: "The tracks included were filtered through from artists that have previously released on Artikal or have some connection with myself either being played on my Rinse FM shows or live sets". Considering the quality of each and every track, only two years of fabrication to finish off this product is remarkably short. Volume One of "The Architects" reflects J:Kenzo's refined taste in dubstep and drum and bass. On the 2 x 12" record, you'll find some absolute masterpieces from amongst others D-Operation Drop, Causa, Compa, Argo, DubDiggerz and J:Kenzo himself. The Architects' series, a yearly showcase filled with content from the label's artists plus VIP and remixes as well as bringing through new talent, will make the foundations of dubstep shake undoubtedly.

Review: Previously known as half of Perverse, Alex Dickson makes his full debut as solo artist Pugilist on the deep bass mothership Artikal. It's fire from the off as "Raindance" brings more than just a shower as a waspish bass conjures thunder before the cloudy keys come in. Dig deeper for the sludgy warped spacefunk of "Terraform", the dubby echoes and cavernous space of "Mumur" and the Skeptical-style two-step tease of "Septic". Serious moves.

Review: If Pugilist sounds familiar, that's because he's one half of 140bpm dupstep duo, Perverse. This solo offering though, is a very different kettle of fish indeed. A showcase for the breadth and scope of this producer's production abilities, and one which the label feels is an 'embodiment of the genre's hybrid tradition', we get four tracks of impressive richness. "Astral Plane" is a slow and weary trek across a lonely planet, while "Chalice Riddim" is a spikey reggae-tinged slice of primal dubstep. "Mantis" meanwhile, is sparse and gentle jazzy garage, and closer "Acceptance" is a stunning slice of dreamy pads and scattershot beats.
