Review: Spencer Parker's Work Them Records returns to the Werk single from Radio Slave the label issued last year, inviting a stellar cast of contemporaries to rewerk the title track. First up is an 11 minute version from White Material co-founder DJ Richard, who once again demonstrates his talent for bringing new levels of depths and emotion to the humble DJ tool, teasing out a certain cosmic flight from Radio Slave's original with the results quite trippy indeed. Dan Beaumont comes through with a thick set wall shaker with some finely programmed kick drums whilst local Berlin talent Sven von Thulen also shines with a bleed laden lo fi burner take.

Review: Superpitcher and Idjut Boys bring their distinct remixing prowess to Radio Slave's Wake Up from earlier this year. The original, a spoken word slow-burner by Matt Edwards, delved into the house and disco roots of the the famous slave. Superpitcher's remix transforms the track into an acid-infused journey, with vocal samples reverberating through cavernous, dubbed-out soundscapes, while Idjut Boys elevate the original's hypnotic atmosphere, cranking up the flange while preserving its grungy bassline and reducing the vocal to a haunting whisper. Wake Up - time to put on a little make up.

Review: Matt Edwards once said that he works best when using just a few elements, and he applies that thought process to Vision with devastating effects. The title track revolves around a tight, fat drum loop, chilling synths and filtered, nagging percussion. Completing Edwards' 'less is more' sound is a pitch-bent vocal that pops in and out of the arrangement with a druggy awkwardness. It sounds like remixer Marcel Dettmann is in favour of a similar technique. The MDR boss leaves space for the vocal and eerie synth line, but sets it against a groove so murky that it's hard not to get lost in its swampy depths.

Review: Following on from his evocative, at times rave-tinged material in 2020, Radio Slave returns underground for this heads-down EP. Similar in style and approach to the recent Floorplan material on Rekids, this four-tracker is punctuated by robust bass drums, spiralling chord sequences and militaristic percussion. "Variations V1", with its ticking hi-hats and doubled up claps, gets the EP off to a rousing start, while on the "V2", Matt Edwards takes the intensity down for a broken beat affair that has echoes of Fachwerk's catalogue. It's only a brief reprieve, however; "V3" is a storming affair, led by billowing chords and dense kicks, while the fourth and final version resounds to ominous synth stabs and niggling percussion.

Review: Following on from the recent UK and Germany EPs, this expansive collection further sheds light on Rekids' wide-ranging approach. There's Radio Slave's own 'Shaking The Tree' remix of Mr G's "Makes No Sense", which draws on the bongo-heavy house of US producers like Halo & Hipp-E, replete with birdsong and Rastafarian stream of consciousness toasting. In contrast, the raw, analogue stomp of Colin McBean's "Get on Down" sounds like Richie Hawtin's Circuit Breaker doing house, while Wink delivers an insane, acid-tweaked take on Radioslave's "Screaming Hands". The compilation also features lesser-known nuggets like Jjak Hogan's "Optifreeze", where tripped out synths combine with a low-slung rhythm, and the muffled vocals and dreamy synths of Amir Alexander's take on Liviu Groza & Kennedy Smith's "Could Be Anybody".

Review: In its original form, "Trans" was one of the dancefloor highlights of Matt Edwards' second album as Radio Slave, 2017's Feel The Same. Here, the dark and stylish original - think alien new wave synth-pop from 1983 re-imagined as a Panoramabar-friendly workout - is given a makeover by two titans of the electronic music scene: Innervisions overlord Dixon and Detroit techno stalwarts Underground Resistance. Naturally, Dixon's rub is weightier and more obviously big room-friendly than Edwards album cut, with the foreboding original synth bassline and bubbly electronic flourishes being joined by weightier drum hits and bold new melodic motifs which fire "Trans" towards the stratosphere. In contrast, Underground Resistance's revision is fuzzier, wonkier and more hypnotic, albeit with a little disco surprise here and there.

Review: To mark the two hundredth release on Rekids, Radio Slave has teamed up with the legendary DJ Hell for a new project, Radio Hell. Given both artists' history and experience, it's no surprise that the release is distinctive. The title track is a jacking affair that takes influence from Steve Poindexter's gritty rhythms but then adds droning textures and a robotic vocal sample to the equation. On "Lost Souls", the pair's deep knowledge is to the fore again, with a bubbling groove underpinning blissed out Detroit synths and murky vocal samples. Delivered with artwork from Alan 'DJ T 1000' Oldham, this release is unmissable.

Review: Matt Edwards is one of the modern masters of the hypnotic groove, but this remix package sees some of his peers provide fine interpretations of Clone Wars. First up is German dub techno producer Markus Suckut, who turns the track into a stripped back, metallic rhythm with insistent bleeps and blips underpinning a pitched down vocal. Chicago don Parris Mitchell turns the original into a churning, chord-heavy affair that seeps through the speakers like an oil slick, while DJ Spider takes a radically different approach. Stripping the track right back, his fusion of eerie back-beats and system-leveling bass belches is disturbingly hypnotic.

Review: Rekids signal a change in focus after the raft of Nina Kraviz related remix releases and instead turn to a classic from the archives of label boss Matt 'Radioslave' Edwards for a pair of fresh remixes. It would be hard to find two more diverse remixers than Mr G and Prins Thomas, but both turn in superb reworks of the 2008 Radioslave bumper "Tantakatan". Mr G calls shotgun and his self-styled Nighttime Dub is a wonderfully dirty analogue groover that takes Edwards' original production into notably darker territory with those deep dubby chord stabs overshadowed by rumbling bass. Naturally Prins Thomas takes a different approach, implementing an acoustic guitar to replay the stabs and using live drums for a loose, laid back groove. There's a notable dose of reverb and delay used throughout that lend this Diskomiks a real druggy feel.

Review: "Talking 2 B Mad" is the third collaboration on Rekids between label owner Matt Edwards and upcoming producer Patrick Mason under the SRVD alias. Like the previous Eps under this name, it shows that the pair have perfected a hard-hitting techno sound. The title track cruises along in excess of 130bpm, its pummelling drums breaking down into frazzled trance riffs that have echoes of Thomas Heckmann. "Twitch" isn't quite as frenetic, but once again, it sees them dive headlong into a driving percussive sound. Powered by pounding kicks and littered with dissected vocal samples, these elements make for the most eloquent big-room techno that you'll hear this year.

Review: Stay Out All Night is Radio Slave's 2020 musical paean to the pleasures of raving back in the day, so who better to rework it than Carl Cox. In a rare remix outing, the dance music veteran stays close to the original, but adds in hypnotic horn stabs, repetitive vocal samples and rolling break beats. Interspersed with vinyl spin-backs, Cox's version is sure to have cross-generational appeal, including the ravers who grew up with his DJ sets, right through to those who have just been introduced to him thanks to this remix. There's also a fine, rolling drum'n'bass reshape included from Metalheadz legend Commix.

Review: Matt Edwards departs from the script for his latest Radio Slave material. Taking influence from old school hardcore and a cut and paste production approach, on "Stay Out.." he delivers twitchy, good-time break beats that are full of hip-hop and soulful vocal samples. It's quite a departure for the creator of linear techno tracks like "Grindhouse" and "Another Club". On "Wait A Minute", Edwards returns to the techno realm; while still containing a repetitive vocal sample that intones the track's title, the rattling percussion, tough kicks and driving rhythm all come together to form a deadly effective big room techno track.

Review: Matt Edwards originally released this EP under the Silent Witness moniker last year, and now re-issues it under his more widely-known Radio Slave alias. Inspired by the sound of early 90s bleep techno, the title track is based on a robust, lean rhythm track and features an eerie, repetitive tonal sequence that weaves its way through the arrangement. These elements make for an evocative track that never strays into retro territory. "Year of the Snake" sees Edwards opt for a slower tempo: while still drawing on the UK sound that gave the world artists like LFO, this time the bleeps unfold against the backdrop of mysterious synths and chugging, clanging percussion.

Review: The second RSPX compilation picks up where the first volume left off, with a focus on crafty house and techno jams. This aesthetic is at the heart of the raw, jacking groove of Radio Slave's "F__k Em" and "This Is Our Groove" a hypnotic, minimal house workout from Rekids regular Confidential Recipe and Lady Tazz. It's also audible on the compilation's techno contributions: Slam's "Beat Control" sees the Soma duo infuse a looped groove with insistent, pitch-bent vocal samples and V111's "East Sex Rave" is a rousing, chord heavy affair. Meanwhile, Markus Suckut's "Flux" takes inspiration from Octave One's primal funk to bring the compilation to a mesmerising climax.

Review: In a short space of time, the RSPX series has become a key part of the Rekids imprint. More broadly, the releases are essential for discerning techno DJs. This compilation shines a light on why RSPX enjoys this status. Mark Broom's "Late Night Rave Muncher" is a diva vocal-led, high energy club banger, while Klint's "Mustang" achieves the same impact by different means. Focused on a rolling groove, filtered vocals weave in and out of the arrangement. That's not to suggest that the series is all about banging techno. Gene Richards Jr's "Take Control" is a superb, Chicago influenced jacker, powered by a primal groove and piledriving claps, while Philippe Petit's "Form & Function" resounds to eerie organs and a shuffling rhythm.

Review: Spencer Parker's Work Them label continues to grow as an outpost for club ready tools, with their latest release a remix shaped celebration of last year's Radioslave platter Report Myself. In original form the release was a perfect display of Matt Edwards capacity to distil house music down to it's bare essentials, so it's little surprise the label have chosen two remixers who build the track back up and take it in their own inimitable direction. First up is Berghain's latest pin up resident Rodhad who unsurprisingly moulds the track into a slab of hypnotic 9am techno with some truly crafty manipulation of the vocal, and it's complemented well by Bearweasel who opts to indulge his 303.

Review: Matt Edwards' label has such strong ties to Berlin, but this release's title doesn't imply that Rekids is opposed to German electronic music. The reality is that it refers to that older meaning of 'versus', the 'versioning' that fuelled dub sound systms. Certainly Berghain residents Marcel Dettmann and Ben Klock put their stamp on Rekids tracks. In Dettmann's case it's ticking percussion and a nagging acid line that lends an air of menace to Mr G's "U Askin?", while for Klock, his "Timepiece" reshape of Deepchild vs Jamie Anderson's "The Clock" provides an opportunity to layer metallic rhythms on top of each other. Roman Fluegel's tranced out version of Radioslave's "My Bleep", which was one of Rekids first releases, completes the package.

Review: The latest in what is becoming known as the "versus" series features a range of styles. It varies from the low slung bass and dark wave synths of the No Ears take on Worst Case Scenario's "Hot Beef" to the chugging, Basic Channel-style chords of Alexkid's "Mousseur Dub" as well as his stripped back, jacking take on Nina Kraviz' "Pain In The Ass". UK vs France also features label boss Matt Edwards' "Loose Joint", in its "Molly's One Day One Night" remix format, which involves skipping percussion and powerful subs. But best of all is I:Cube's take on Toby Tobias' "The Feeling", where sensuous melodies are combined with the most haunting vocals this side of Dead Can Dance.
