Dekmantel Best Of 2018
Various
Peaking Lights - "Blind Corner" - (6:40) 118 BPM
Bruxas - "Hermes" - (5:29) 50 BPM
Review: Dekmantel rounds off a hugely successful year with a compilation that reflects the organisation's multi-faceted approach. At one end of the spectrum there's the dubbed out groove and spacey vocals of Peaking Light's "Blind Corner" and tropical act Bruxas' left of centre beats, while at the other end Robert Hood delivers the blistering techno of "Red Machine". In between these extremes, there are Dekmantel-supported artists such as Betonkust & Palmbomen II - impressing here with the Legowelt-esque "Renaat Egypte" - and zeitgeist-defining names like Lena Willikens and Matrixxman. Add in some Dutch scene veterans such as Tom Trago, on fine form with the epic but understated "Working Machines", and it's not hard to see why 2018 was a great year for the Dutch collective.

Gigi Masin - "Maja" - (10:49) 116 BPM
Vakula - "Robot Fuck The System" - (6:45) 125 BPM
Played by: DeWalta
Review: A true staple of the Amsterdam scene, the Rush Hour affiliated Yuri Boselie aka Cinnaman takes up the reins for local institution Dekmantel's extended tenth birthday celebrations with this mastermix. It takes in the entirety of the 10 volume edition - what an effort. What may seem as an outrageous challenge - what with the compilation's genre diversity and wide rage of tempos - it's a success, for they've certainly found the right candidate. Cinnaman plays a wide range of styles anyway, and is never afraid to mix the known with the unknown - he has a reputation for his remarkable combinations and transitions. From moments of sublime ambience (Italian ambient legend Gigi Masin with the utterly evocative "Maja") to bass heavy electro bounce (courtesy of Egyptian Lover or Syracuse & Epsilove), right through to techno bangers of the cerebral variety (by Donato Dozzy & Peter Van Hoesen or local hero Talismann) and stuff by Bufiman or Tony Allen - it's a solid effort here by one of Holland's finest selectors.

Slicing
Van Pelt - (4:53) 130 BPM Hot
Shadow Harp - (6:10) 131 BPM
Review: Randomer follows his 2016 debut release on this Dekmantel offshoot label with the musically diverse Slicing. Like the stage at the festival that it is named after, it moves through the musical spectrum. "Van Pelt" is a dense, stepping affair, its cavernous rhythm providing the back drop for hypnotic, gamelan percussion and half-heard ethnic samples. By contrast, "Shadow Harp" is a utilitarian slice of break beat techno, shot through with razor sharp riffs, while on "Dissolve", he pivots towards a tough but pulsating rhythm track, underpinned by tribal drums. Rounding off this across the board but dance floor friendly EP is the title track's droning, clattering arrangement, tingling like a live electricity wire.

Randomer - "Myanmar" - (5:12) 130 BPM Hot
Randomer - "Spooky Herrmann" - (5:30) 125 BPM
Review: Clouds, Quail and Turtle inaugurate their new Headstrong imprint after a series of parties in Glasgow with the same name. As you can tell by the artists on on offer here: it's gonna be a pretty noisy affair. first you will find preferred special guest from London Randomer: who goes straight for the jugular on "Myanmar" galloping like a racehorse through your speakers and supported by immaculately programmed polyrhythms and druggy vocal loops. Unlike the previous title, it's actually "Spooky Hermann" that delves into the exotic; with its hypnotic tribal rhythms and Millsian melody that slowly and woozily drifts out of tune: very clever. Then, the Perth Drug Legends aka Clouds deliver the school yard anarchy of "Overflow Ya": a rapid fire attack to the senses, followed by the body-bashing peak time assault that is "Nitrous & Oxide".

Voiski - "Time As A River" - (5:48) 122 BPM
Randomer - "Foghorn" - (5:52) 125 BPM
Review: The seventh instalment of Dekmantel's tenth anniversary celebration puts some newcomers side by side with more established artists. Covering the middle ground between these two extremes is Voiski, whose "Time As A River" features jittery drums married with dense bleeps and a melancholic synth segue. Randomer is in the same position, inhabiting the middle ground between the veterans and the brand new. The UK producer's "Foghorn" does exactly what it says on the tin, delivering a dense, stepping rhythm that unravels to reveal blaring, drone-like horns. In the newcomer's corner there's Tolouse Low Trax, with the low-slung, oddball house of "Crash", while at the opposite end of the spectrum Versatile founder Gilb'r features with the experimental drones and rain forest sounds of "The Triangle".

Smokin - (5:39) 131 BPM Hot
Velvet - (5:59) 125 BPM
Rye - (5:08) 125 BPM
Review: Following a productive 2016 in which he delivered superb material on labels including Dekmantel, Clone and Perc Tracks, Randomer returns to L.I.E.S for the first time since 2015. "Smokin" is a typically bombastic and bass-heavy affair, with the producer combining his usual metallic, industrial-tinged sounds and spacey electronics with a killer electro groove. It's little less than a genuine club roller that achieves a perfect balance between rhythmic funkiness and trippy eccentricity. you will then get the creepy, echo-laden hits, horror chic and panicked rhythms of "Velvet" and the dense, dusty late night techno throb of "Rye". While neither of the these tracks can match the thrills of "Smokin", they're both excellent mixing tools.

Second Freeze/Simple As
Second Freeze - (6:00) 128 BPM Hot
Simple As - (5:40) 125 BPM
Review: Speak to anyone on the Bristol scene, and they'll happily tell you that Jacob Martin AKA Hodge is willing to open his studio doors to almost any like-minded soul. His latest collaborator is the similarly productive Randomer, fresh from inspired outings on Clone Basement Series and Dekmantel UFO Series. There's a real energy about A-side "Second Freeze", which slowly builds on waves of punchy, polyrhythmic percussion and creepy noises, before bringing in a similarly bold and speaker-hugging bassline. The talented duo goes ever further in this African-influenced direction of thrillingly percussive flipside "Simple As", where additional drum hits pepper a dense, polyrhythmic groove. It's one of the best drum records we've heard this year, and that's saying something.

Concierge/Woodwork
Concierge - (6:16) 125 BPM Hot
Woodwork - (5:04) 120 BPM
Review: Rohan Walder clocks in for this third Randomer outing on Clone's Basement Series in as many years, with Concierge arriving as the Londoner's first 12" transmission of 2016. The template is pretty much laid down now for the Basement series and there is always some real gratifying techno to be found from those who step up to contribute. Title cut "Concierge" finds Walder's well-documented talent for crafting unique drum patterns really come to the fore on a dramatic, meaty production and sits well next to the more bugged out B-side. "Woodwork" is, in a word, trippy, leading out like Felix Da Housecat's "Kickdrum" before veering off down a wormhole of crazed percussive notes and mangled samples that gets increasingly crazier as it progresses - we really need to hear this one on a big system wow.

Running Dry
Running Dry - (5:32) 65 BPM
My Ears Hurt - (4:40) 87 BPM
Review: The title track on Randomer's first release for Dekmantel is deceptive. Although the rhythm flails and rolls with the UK producer's usual sense of urgency, it is swathed in misty, hazy melodies. There is no such ambiguity on "My Ears Hurt"; earning its place on the label's UFO Series, the arrangement features a rhythm that weaves its way in and out of a myriad of tonal blips and bleeps. In contrast, "Rendell Pips" and "Music for Two Kalimbas" are powerful DJ cuts. In the absence of any unusual sideways turns, Randomer relies on tight drums, rolling rhythms and plunging breakdowns to lead the listener down the wormhole.

O & V & R - "Metal Slipper" - (7:19) 131 BPM
Lakker - "Chain Of Combs" - (6:00) 130 BPM
Review: To mark the twentieth anniversary of the foundation of his label, James Ruskin has put together this massive compilation. It includes long-term friends and associates of the label - like Oliver Ho, Regis and Luke Slater - as well as newer additions to the roster, including Lakker and Rommek. Apart from uniting artists from different generations, the compilation also showcases the label's various hues; from the broken beats and intricate rhythms of Ruskin and Regis' O/V/R project and the hypnotic soundscapes of Lakker's "Orange" to the trace stabs and 10 tonne kicks of Regis' "Party Spoiler Too" and the chaotic industrial rhythms on Truss' "Wanastow", this compilation offers to newcomers an invaluable introduction to Blueprint, or to long-standing fans an indispensable reminder of why the label is unique.

Review: Rohan Walder's prolific output continues with another release on Ron Morelli's L.I.E.S. It's been been a banner year for Walder with releases recently on sister label Russian Torrent Versions and Clone Basement Series earning him his stripes. He unleashes six more bastardised takes on techno for this new EP. From the sublime exotic percussion workouts on the title track and "Bell Jam", the rusty and stomping warehouse grooves of "Brutus" and "Dem Thing" it all crosses rather gracefully over on the rather fierce "Juju". This guy never fails to deliver, check this out!

Randomer & Cadans EP
Angry Fiddle - (4:57) 130 BPM Hot
Lottarump - (5:11) 128 BPM
Review: In which the acclaimed UK producer Rohan 'Randomer' Walder gets together with Cadans. Despite only having one previous release to his credit, we can assume that the division of labour is equal on this joint venture. "Angry Fiddle" sees the pair drop cavernous, pounding drum patterns, riffs so abrasive they could bleach a mould-encrusted bathroom and a high-pitched sample that could be the fiddle referred to in the title. "Lottarump" isn't quite as forceful and its buzzing riffs and cut-up vocal sample suggest that the pair like to walk on the lighter side of the bass-techno spectrum.

Stupid Things I Do (new school mix) - (6:29) 129 BPM Hot
Stupid Things I Do (old school mix) - (7:23) 129 BPM
Review: Having struggled to find his niche during the early part of his career, things started looking up for Randomer when he popped up on Numbers back in 2011 with the bombastic blends of acid house and techno that made up his impressive Real Talk EP. Since then, he's impressively flitted between techno and bass music, and here delivers an all-out techno assault for Clone's occasional Basement Series. There's a real no-nonsese feel to the relentless kick-drums and cut-up vocal samples of "Stupid Things I Do", which comes in "New School" and "Old School" mix formats (the latter including some looser techno breakbeats, and thus being our pick). The EP also includes two formidable percussion workouts, which deliver driving drums and booming basslines.

Moving through the glittery funk-leaning post-dubstep of Fantastic Mr Fox, Mount Kimbie and James Blake, through techno contributions from Sei A, Randomer and Guy Andrews, and bass hybrids from Pangaea and Joe, the selections on offer demonstrate why Hemlock has been ahead of the game since its inception. Review: Glaswegian imprint Numbers maintain the release pressure that's built up a head of dizzying steam in 2011 with their 20th drop being a label debut from Randomer. The Norf Londoner's musical path began with jungle and that's more than apparent on the title track "Real Talk" which will get a certain SoYoer called Blawan worried about his status as the best drum programmer in town. It's the sort of disjointed, thumping house track that provides immediate gratification, especially when the sub destroying bass purge comes through. "Lime Pie" is equally thrilling, gradually aligning into a ruffed up 303 flex and concrete thick drums, whilst "Stalker" throws pots and pans into the rhythmic equation with neck snapping results. Possibly our favourite NMBRS drop to date.
