Lumberjacks In Hell 002
Broadway - (6:24) 100 BPM Hot
All Around The Watchtower - (6:23) 115 BPM
Give Me Your Love - (7:49) 130 BPM
Review: Amsterdam dwelling editor par excellence Em Vee took the solo reigns on the inaugural Lumberjacks In Hell - and truly excelled with a great reimagination of "Miss You". The second release on the label sees the German share duties with Spanish edit demon Rayko. First up is an expert rearrangement of Candi Staton's cover of the Bee Gee's standard "Nights On Broadway" which strips the track of its orchestral leanings to focus on the groove! Following this is a meaty take on a classic, with Barbara Keith's cover of "All Along The Watchtower" reinforced with some bottom end bump. Em Vee spreads a special disco version of Alma Lee's late 70s Philly delight "Gimme Your Love" with an extended intro that fully displays his edit talents.

Son Of Zeus (Anthony Mansfield edit) - (6:58) 104 BPM Hot
How Can You Say Goodbye (Cosmic Boogie edit) - (7:58) 91 BPM
S&M (Sexy Music) (Rayko club mix) - (6:43) 110 BPM
Do I Do (Sleazy McQueen re-edit) - (8:17) 113 BPM
Review: Four excellent new funk/soul/disco bombs from the Whiskey Disco label, with some surprising covers and peerless edits for your aural delectation. Anthony Mansfield sets about deconstructing a fresh cover of "Hercules" by Aaron Neville, while fans of Philly/Al Green-esque slow '70s funk will love Cosmic Boogie's soft-touch edit of "How Can You Say Goodbye". Rayko ups the tempo a little with his mix of the boogie wonder "S&M (Sexy Music), while WD label-head Sleazy McQueen has a lot of fun with Stevie Wonder's "Do I Do", looping up instrumental sections just right for a new perspective on this classic Stevie joint.

Review: There's a reason that Midnight Riot's eponymous compilations frequently charge to the top of the Juno Download charts. Put simply, they never disappoint. This ninth installment sticks to the now tried-and-tested formula - house-friendly re-edits and originals from across the disco, boogie, soul and funk spectrum - but predictably hits the spot throughout. As usual, there's a bonus mix - this time put together by globe-trotting scalpel jockey Rayko - and tracks come from both label regulars ('80s Child, Ziggy Phunk, Chewy Funk) and an impressive array of new or unheralded talents. It's in the latter category that you'll find some of the most impressive fare - see Phil Jaimes deliciously Balearic "Nowhere To Hide" and Cosmocomics' kaleidoscopic synth-funk jam "Mary Jane" - though the standard remains pleasingly high throughout.

Review: Fingerman's Hot Digits imprint has packed in a lot of releases over the past 12 months, as this expansive roundup of the label's second year in business proves. Featuring 27 tracks and a bonus mix by the South Coast dwelling label boss, there's naturally plenty to admire. Highlights include, but are not limited to, the rolling, head-nodding grooves of Eyeco M's "Keeping It To Myself", the killer proto-house throb of "Tonight" by Bad Barbie vs Evil Smarty, the sexy, string-drenched disco loveliness of P-Sol's "Can't You See", LTJ's trumpet-boasting funk bumper "Fat Thing", and the hard-wired, bass-heavy rework of Julia & Company's "Breakin' Down (Sugar Samba)" by Melon Bomb. It is, though, all pretty darn hot.

Can't Get Enough EP
Can't Get Enough (Rayko Tiger soul edit) - (6:52) 112 BPM
Rock My World (Rayko Tribute edit) - (7:26) 95 BPM Hot
Step Out Of My Dreams (Rayko Tiger soul edit) - (5:33) 115 BPM
Touch Me (Rayko Untouchable edit) - (8:55) 115 BPM
Review: Re-edit don Rayko still seems to be able to pull gems out of the bag at an alarming rate. Here he's done it again with a selection 'cheeky' edits, some more obvious than others. "Can't Get Enough" is made for those in love with the glistening dry ice electronics of mid-80s soul, Linn drum breaks and all. "Rock My World" is a re-work of Wacko Jacko's opinion-dividing 2001 comeback single, "Step Out Of My Dreams" is killer West End-style electro-disco and finally "Touch Me" sees Cathy Dennis' late '80s pop tune reduced to a ferociously funky guitar and cowbell workout.

Late Nite Tuff Guy - "Wishing" (Late Nite Tuff Guy Dream remix) - (6:27) 99 BPM Hot
Review: Ireland's Get Down Edit's have developed a real reputation for quality, with many established DJs counting themselves as fans. Even a quick listen to this EP and you'll know why: there's no cheese to found, only well crafted reworks of classy tunes allowed. Label bosses Daz and Martin are first up with the string-laden slow motion "Strategy". The Legendary 1979 Orchestra's "Treating Me" is a steamy stomp with a big chorus, while Stephanie Mill's "Put Your Body In It" is beefed up in fine style by Rayko; Last but not least, Late Night Tuff Guy turns Rose Royce's "Wishing On A Star" into an incredible, and almost unrecognisable, trippy electronic odyssey!

Review: This seven-track collection of disco re-edits from the Editorial camp has a lot to offer - not least previously unreleased cuts from fast-rising scalpel starlets Matthew 'MK' Kyle and Rayko. It's Kyle who steals the show, laying down a typically groovesome deep house/disco cut that boasts some particularly blissful jazz-funk guitar samples. Rayko's cut - a dancefloor-friendly re-dub of "What Did You Do To Me?" - is as solid and playable as you'd expect. Elsewhere, debutant Noodleman excels with the deep fried cosmic funk of "Teachin' & Tryin", and Ed Wizard & Disco Double Dee bring the heavyweight party flavours with "Get Some".

First emerging at the turn of the century with some superb edits of poppy R n'b (anyone remember his boogie take on "Frontin" by Pharrell?) the Yam master has gone on to build quite the empire with his Midnight Riot label. The latest MR release reflects his nature, a new mix featuring 20 killer rollerskate jams from friends as well as some outright classics. Highlights include the glistening, chrome-plated funk of George Kelly's "Turn It Up", the sleek and synthy 80s jam "Living A Lie" by Freekwency and the slammin Linn drum freestyle action of "On The Upside (High Drummer edit)" by Wonkar.

Masterworks is his new imprint, and this eponymous compilation is its debut release. It's a total all-you-can-eat buffet of contemporary disco, featuring a whole host of familiar names. There are a whopping 23 tracks on here, some of the best include Tomas Malo's sultry grinder, "After The Rain", Yam Who?'s bouncy sunkissed disco joint "Find Out" and the digi-freestyle breaks of TV's "Love Situation".

Review: Having recently expanded the repertoire of their previously edit-heavy Retrospective imprint to include original productions from themselves and others, Ruben and Ra gather together a bunch of mates for an expansive collection of previously unreleased material. It's a largely excellent collection, mixing brand new deep house and nu-disco with smart edits and loopy, slo-mo edits-not-edits. Bedmo Disco Records' regular Jimmy The Twin and Rayko provide scalpel jobs, Ruben and Ra do their Tiger and Woods-ish thing and Toomy Disco drops some contemporary electrofunk. Best of all, though, is Fil Lavin's "Love Is Gone", a formidably rush-inducing chunk of fluid deep house that channels the spirit of Chill Out/"Pure Trance" series-era KLF via a familiar, dubbed-out vocal sample.

Review: Barely a week goes by without the release of another 12" or digital single for perpetual re-edit don Rayko. Luckily, this synth-heavy selection box of house-friendly electrofunk dubs is probably one of his strongest releases of recent times. Arguably the strongest cut is "People", which is available in two versions; a tidy 7-minute Rayko 12 mix, and an extended, Tiger & Woods style builder that stretches out for 11 synth-laden minutes. Review: You're only five years old once, so why not celebrate in style? And here Warrington lad Danny Worrall's disco and re-edits label Masterworks Music do just that, with an anniversary collection packing a whopping 50 back catalogue nuggets. You'll excuse us the full track-by-track, then, but suffice to say that this is the label that helped launch the careers of Dr Packer and Natasha Kitty Katt, both of whom feature here, and with names like Ziggy Phunk, Rayko, Alkalino, Chuggin' Edits and Fabiolous Barker also on bill, you should already have a pretty good idea what to expect. Classy stuff all round, and a great VFM package - here's to five more years!

Review: Every 12 months, Fingerman's prolific Hot Digits imprint serves up an epic compilation entirely made up of exclusive, previously unheard re-edits, reworks and original productions. They're invariably excellent and this year's edition - the fifth in total - is even more epic than usual. There's naturally plenty to set the pulse racing amongst the dancefloor focused 32-track selection, from the throbbing Italo-disco style electronic sleaziness of Peza's "I Gotta Little Love" and the bouncy, acid-flecked cheeriness of Limpdisco's "Rush Hour", to the angular nu-disco heaviness of Andy Kidd's "The Dope Cube", the sparkling 80s boogie goodness of LUP INO's "Don't Stop Fooling" and and disco-funk-goes-house pump of Fingerman's "Family Ties". Keep an eye out too for rock solid rubs by Dr Packer, Chuggin Edits, Rayko and Andy Buchan.

Review: The Legendary Sound Orchestra continues his attempt to provide disco edit lovers with something extraordinary, with a third collection of hand picked reworks. Predictably, there's plenty to enjoy, from his own sparse, piano-heavy version of Silvetti's Salsoul classic "Spring Rain", to the rolling, bongo-laden goodness of 78 Edits' sprightly but loopy "Don't You Know". Highlights-wise, it's a toss-up between Alkalino's baggy disco-soul shuffler, "Have A Ball", and Jimmy The Twin's superb, TR-707-enhanced "Party Down". The latter, a horn-heavy chunk of upbeat disco-funk, is arguably the Bristol-based scalpel fiend's best work to date.

Review: Having impressed with the first collection of re-edits earlier in 2012, the Legendary 1979 Orchestra gather together more floor-friendly reworks from friends and associates on their own Legendary Sound Research imprint. With different tempos, sounds and styles at play, it's a well-rounded collection. Contrast, for example, the tough 80s-electro-goes house vibes of Legendary 1979 Orchestra's "Burning" and the slow, soulful bump of 78 Edits' "Can't Have My Love". Or, for that matter, the breezy party vibes of Andrei's "Let's Go Raw" and the heavy funk of Richmed's "Do Your Thang". There's also some more 80s disco tweakery from Spanish edit workhorse Rayko.

Review: Editorial Records have been delivering top selling 'slo-mo disco and deep grooves...from around the globe' since 2009. Here they keep the heat on with a new summer-friendly compilation, Golden Grooves. There are 15 choice cuts here, all of which employ a formula of providing a mellow house frame on which to hang some filtered vintage samples. Highlights include the serpentine bassline of Matt Hughes' cocktail-houser "Rodeo Warrior", the Minnie Ripperton-with-a-backbeat haze of "The Spirit" by The Groovers and the spacey hiNRG disco of "Body Heat".

There's jamming horror P-funk from Swifft Edits, '80s pop, rock and disco from 80s Child, a floor-filling edit of Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer", and some Afrika Bambaataa inspired electro from Funk Hunk - with plenty more shocks and horrors to devour.

Love Come Down (Rayko edit) - (5:43) 116 BPM
Review: Spanish edit maestro Rayko pops up on Ruben & Ra's Retrospective imprint with a clutch of synth-heavy electrofunk re-rubs. As the title suggests, the lead track is a heavyweight cut-up of The Whispers' 1984 Reggie Calloway-produced synth-funk jam "Contagious". Like the rest of the edits here (particularly the lush "Whip"), it strikes a neat balance between thick instrumental grooves and the original's simple vocal hooks. There are two versions of twinkling 80s soul groover "Love Come Down" - a smart edit from Rayko and a remix from Ruben & Ra that sounds like a breezier version of Tiger & Woods.

Review: As you might extrapolate from the title, Riot In Lagos is Midnight Riot's tribute to the endearing influence of African dance music. In typical style, this is achieved through a blend of contemporary productions, sample-heavy cuts and edits of original African material. The standard is impressively high throughout, with little in the way of fluff or filler. Highlights include, but are not limited to, the inspired deep house/Afro-disco fusion of Mena & Melgado's "African Food", the rich deep house bump of Yam Who's "How We Do", the dense percussion and glistening guitars of Drop Out Orcherstra's Candido tribute, "Jin Go La", and the pitched-down, Fela-in-dub chug of Hober Mallow's "Egbe Mi O". Oh, and Jonny Walters' hypnotic Afro-boogie shuffler "Jam Bo Ree".

Review: Situationism is run by a mysterious 'collective of DJs and producers from the five valleys'. Although little is revealed about their identities, we do know that this compilation is their biggest release yet and it boasts the mighty "On It" by Peza. The track's clever fusion of a boogie sample (Starguard's High On The Boogie) and some subtle 303 work has got people talking and dancing already. The quality stays high over the remaining tracks too, highlights including George Kelly's melancholic Italo gem, "Trip to Jupiter", Vampire Disco's moody synth prowler "Orbit" and the chilled cocktail grooves of Alkalino's "Trigger".

Review: Spanish producer Rayko has delivered some impressive dancefloor magic courtesy of his Rare Wiri label. Ranging from re-edits to deep nu-disco and everything in between, the imprints sound is all encompassing. That philosophy is fully explored here on Retro Future Disco, bringing all kinds of disco approaches to the table. Highlights include the schmokin' 70s jazz-funk of "Hot Head Disco" by Psychemagik, the legendary Il Flagranti's rare re-edit of new wave classic "Walking In The Rain" by Flash & The Pan and the dreamy, star-crossed synth-pop of "In Your Eyes" by Yam Who? Something for everyone here.

Review: Going by the volume of tracks on show, it would be fair to say that Masterworks Music's "Bag of Tricks" is not a little handbag, but more like a Mary Poppins style bottomless carpetbag. The label's latest rummage through its seemingly endless contents has been a successful one, with the 20 showcased cuts including a wealth of fine fusions of disco, house, boogie, electro and 80s soul. It's uniformly dancefloor-focused, with highlights including the Afro-house/disco-tech fusion of JB Dizzy, the driving, spaced-out disco-house grooves of Mike Woods, the loose-limbed, off-the-wall edits of Chewy Rubs, the sweet disco-soul bounce of RocknRolla Soundsystem, the delay-laden synth sing-along styles of Rayko and the hot-to-trot brilliance of Downunder Disco.

James Rod - "The Name Of Love" - (6:19) 111 BPM Hot
Review: Back in March, Rayko and James Rod launched their Classics of Arrikitaun series with an EP of largely impressive re-edits on Rare Wiri. This second volume delivers more breezy, midtempo goodness for those who like their grooves sunny and synth-heavy. Predictably, Rayko's two contributions tend towards the Balearic boogie, with the drifting, delay-laden vocals, rubbery synth-bass and glistening guitars of "Betcha" just elbowing out Midnight Starr cut-up "Headlines" in the "highlight" stakes. As for Rod, he urges us to grab a glass of something cool, sweet and refreshing on the piano-laden disco shuffle of "Silver Bike", before closing his eyes and raising his arms heavenward on the sensual boogie throb of "The Name Of Love".

Get Loose - (6:15) 114 BPM
Review: It's become something of a cliche to point out Rayko's restless productivity, but it's nevertheless true that the Spanish producer does release rather a lot of material. To be fair to the Madrid man, this four-tracker for Midnight Riot is one of his stronger efforts. He begins with the life-affirming pianos and gospel vocals of "Hallelujah", before providing a sun-kissed re-dub of Fleetwood Mac's Balearic classic "Big Love" (here re-titled "Alone"). "That Sound" delivers an attractive blend of wiggly boogie synths, sharp riffs and fuzzy rock guitars, while "Get Loose" is a mostly instrumental re-recording of the Aleems' breakdance era electrofunk classic of the same name.

Review: Spanish re-edit hero Rayko had a productive 2011, releasing some of the best cut-ups and disco reworks of the year. Here he begins 2011 in similar fashion, delivering four more tried and tested slabs of dancefloor funk. Opener "My Lady" does a terrific job at re-modelling a Prince-era, slap-bass heavy 80s jam, removing all but snatches of the vocal in favour of more instrumental groovery. "After The After" continues on a similar theme, going deeper into slow dance territory, while "Turn Me On Again" builds brilliantly over six delightfully sensual minutes. "This Is It", meanwhile, adds some head-nodding house flavours to a simmering 80s soul jam. Solid.

Review: Editorial are back with more throwback disco sounds for our decadent dancefloor (guilty) pleasure! Starting out with the sublime deep soul of Slow Steps "We Won't Have To Cry No More (re-work)" they then launch into Los Angeles' Dino (yes, not Gino!) Soccio's "West Athena Funk" which stays on the soul train for a while until the epic boogie drama of Rayko's "Magic Number" ups the tempo, good and proper. Danny Deluxe serves up some summery Balearic vibes on "The Best Years" but they leave the best for last with Sunner Souls' "Show Me Your Love", a funky disco house groove for late night fashion crowds, which is ironically by a Siberian producer! We can dig it!

Review: Spanish nu-disco don Rayko (Raico Pe?a) revisits four 60s/70s faves with impressive results. Marvin Gaye's 'Mercy, Mercy Me' becomes lazy, lounge-y groover 'Mercy', with fat live bass and looped snatches of Gaye's vocal floating over the top; Steve Miller Band's 'Fly Like An Eagle' becomes blissy, druggy throbber 'Fly' and Ray Carlos's 'Amigo' is, er, Roberto Carlos's 'Amigo' but a bit more Balearic! The jewel in the crown, though, is 'Dust Woman', a frankly superb reworking of Fleetwood Mac's 'Gold Dust Woman', with added eerie howls, that will cause some real 'WTF?' moments on dancefloors...

Review: We like to imagine Rayko rocking down the street in his sun-drenched Spanish town, blasting out tactile '80s boogie, soul and disco from an over-sized ghetto blaster slung over his shoulder. If this scene were real, then he may well be playing "Disco Thunder", the tidy re-edit that opens his latest three-track salvo. It's a fine slice of 80s disco-boogie goodness rich unclipped guitars, P-funk bass, sparkling synths, electro beats and bold female vocal snippets. If he were feeling particularly bold, he may also press play on "Touch Down", a driving disco-funk revision full of weighty punk-funk bass, crunchy Clavinet lines, spacey synths and dewy-eyed vocal snippets. Should be want to stop and do a bit of break-dancing, dreamy and delay-laden closing cut "Hypnotic" would do the trick.

Review: Madrid's Rayko and James Rod go way back, with a long hearty history of collaborations. One of their key projects is the Classics Of Arrikitaun series and now we have here a fourth instalment. James is up first this time, delivery two new tunes: the light and breezy boogie of "So Easy" and the moody electro arpeggios (and Italo disco melodies) of "Hit!". Rayko starts tough we a raw and chunky vintage funk banger called "What's Your Doin" before going all synthy on the smooth 80s RnB of "Get Your Loving".

Review: Re-edit hero Rayko teams up with the little-known Dynamicron for this four-track scalpel trip into the murky world of 80s power-pop, Eurobeat and skewed Balearica. Rayko himself offers up two tracks - the soft focus Balearic pop indulgence of "Voyager" and the handbag-friendly chugging cut-up 80s pop sweetness of "Foreign Affair". Dynamicron, meanwhile, goes for a heavier sound on his two cuts, the booming bottom end throb of "JukeBox Hero" (80s powerpop goes disco-house, anyone?) and guitar solo-laden "WorkingClass Hero" (yep, an edit of a cover of Lennon's "Working Class Hero"). There's a distinct whiff of hairspray about the whole EP!

Review: Following a fine retrospective of "original productions and reworks" earlier in the month, the Rare Wiri label has prepped another killer compilation to help mark the imprint's 10th birthday. This time round, boss man Rayko has gathered together some of the label's most potent re-edits. The quality threshold remains impressively high throughout, with highlights including James Rod's chugging and cheery disco-boogie shuffler "So Easy", the dreamy deep house throb of In Flagranti's loopy version of "Walking In The Rain", the sparkling saccharine soul/jazz-funk flex of Yam Who's revision of "In Your Eyes" and the pulsating Italo-disco/disco-funk fusion of Ziggy Phunk's take on "One Evening". Throw in a clutch of top-notch Rayko re-edits and the result is an essential collection of floor-focused reworks.

Review: Deeply rooted in '70s and '80s disco, funk, boogie and rock, Raico Pena is the founder of Rare Wiri Records. Rayko's influences are masterfully interpreted and transformed into modern day dancefloor bombs. His name has appeared on literally dozens of great records scattered across labels like Eskimo, Is It Balearic? and of course Nang who present "No Stopping". His debut album entitled Rebirth first appeared on the London based imprint back in 2014 and this is his third release for them. Starting off with the original version, which is a deep/lo-slung disco joint for lovers and featuring Tania Harosha's gorgeous vocals. Ron Basejam (Delusions Of Grandeur/Futureboogie) takes it further into slo-mo territory, creating a nice chilled atmosphere while Santa Esperanza Records boss Ilya Santana (who has

Review: An 11-track compilation of modern day funk and disco here from Norway's Walking Disco stable. While Rayko and C Da Afro are both represented, the emphasis generally is on lesser-known names, but there's still plenty of quality on offer. Fingerman conjures the classier, jazzier end of 80s boogie nicely on 'Mind Fonk', while equally convincing are the mid-70s velvet-suited disco vibes of Disco Funk Spinner's 'Fascinating Strike'. Funk Hunk apes classic Moroder on 'After Dark', while label owner Saskin S bookends the collection with two slow-moving funk jams, 'Yes, You Know I'm Right' and 'My Pnoop'. Classy stuff.
