Review: Ricardo Villalobos was never one for brevity, but even by his own standards, these contributions are epic. The release starts with the title track of Reboot aka Frank Heinrich's EP, where watery chords and underwater effects are underpinned by spiky, stripped back rhythms. It's an effective, direct dance floor track. It's no surprise then that on Villalobos' 'Hauswiedermischung' version, things take a turn for the weirder. Vocals weave in and out of a lopsided groove that goes on and on for one-third of an hour. The situation gets even odder on the 'Loosing My Miles' remix. There, drums swing loosely and seemingly out of time as the original version's vocals are sped and pitched up to chipmunks-on-acid levels. Certainly, you'll be questioning your sanity once you hear this.

Review: Danny Tenaglia is a stone cold legend, but his profile has waned significantly over recent years. Given that it's 25 years since the release of his first production, this first contribution to the Balance series - is well timed. Pleasingly, it seems Tengalia still "has it it". Throughout the collection, the veteran NYC DJ maintains a fearsome energy level, mixing things up via a track list that spans chunky tech-house, darkroom tribal, heavily percussive fare (see Michel Cleis' dub of Basement Jaxx's "Mermaid of Salinas") and intelligent techno revivalism (Dax J's brilliant "Dreamscape" and Ho's "Deletion 3"). It is, of course, an impeccable selection, as you'd expect from a man with Tengalia's undoubted pedigree.

Review: Since dropping his Shunyata album back in 2010, this talented German has concentrated on hammering out essential house tool after house tool on myriad labels. He's never just satisfied with one-dimensional productions though, and the mighty "Samson" is no different: full, rolling drums accelerate under a hypnotic vocal loop and cleverly layered percussion creating a sense of barely contained delirium. Elsewhere we also get a little locomotive techy disco in the form of "Jada Jada", before Harry Romero steps in to add some tribal-swing spice to the title track's original ingredients.

Review: The latest Cadenza missive does what Reboot and indeed Luciano's label have become best known for - twisting new shapes and sounds out of tool house. The organic, shuffling groove on the original track features soaring bass licks and beautifully fragile Oriental melodies. Robert Dietz's version dispenses with these subtleties and focuses instead on rolling drums and acidic licks. Cesar Merveille's take brings the sense of melody back and adds some breezy bass licks, reminiscent of old Saunderson techno-house. However, the standout track here is "In The Sky"; clocking in at over 12 minutes its tight percussion and soulful vocal samples culminate in the cheeky sample of the vocal from Billie Ray Martin's "Your Loving Arms", which also provides the arrangement's outro.
