Review: When it comes to infusing deep house with elements of jazz, soul and Detroit techno, few have as good a track record as veteran Kiwi producer Recloose. It's perhaps unsurprising, then, that Spirit Knows, his latest EP for pal Will Saul's Aus Music imprint, is pretty darn tasty. The title track, featuring soulful vocalist MaraTK, sits somewhere between his classic work for Planet E (think "Ain't Changin" in particular) and the sort of organic, musically expansive deep house more often associated with soulful house producers such as Phil Asher. The producer's Motor City influences come to the fore on the spacey broken house of "No I Don't", while "Ezrakh-Georomancer" is a spoken word-boasting chunk of New Jersey garage influenced jazz-house smoothness.

Review: Man like Recloose returns to Delusions of Grandeur, having debuted on the label in fine style with last year's Don't Get Me Wrong EP, and it's a welcome one as It's Too Late is the New Zealand dwelling producer's first EP of 2013! Despite this prolonged absence, Recloose has clearly lost none of the energy that drove his DoG debut, with all three tracks here demonstrating a real vibrancy that will immediately provide a lift for any dancefloor experiencing an element of lag. The title cut bounces along with the sort of finesse you'd expect from a producer of Recloose's calibre, whilst the heavy slab of filter disco "You Just Love You" highlights his arrangement skills. Fans of Cardiology era Recloose should head right to "Backtrack" and bask in its brilliance.

Review: Juno favourite Recloose provides one original track here, while surrendering a further two for remixing. "Chamois" is a feel-good slice of vintage-sounding looped disco-house. Andres' remix of "Electric Sunshine" is a killer, percussion-heavy house-funker with a cool, if slightly spooky, warped synth melody. Finally Oliverwho Factory take "Magic" and give it a techy old school house makeover which is, frankly, a blinder.

Review: Recloose on Delusions of Grandeur? Yes please! "Don't Get Me Wrong" is classic Matt Cicioine, packed full of his usual musicality and dense, melodic production. It sounds like an unlikely fusion of distant, long-forgotten disco and spine-tingling deep house, with more atmospheric vocal samples and live instruments than you can shake a smelly stick at. It's heady and intoxicating, coming on like a classic house production made somewhere between Detroit and New York. The driving "Shimmy" continues the murky, retro-futurist trend and is just as engaging. As if that wasn't enough, there's also a lovingly fluid, decidedly Balearic rework of the title track from Melbournite Tornado Wallace that's quite possibly the best thing he's done to date. Splendid!

Review: Following last year's well-received Saturday Night Manifesto EP, Recloose continues his association with Rush Hour. "Feels Like Magic" is arguably his best single for some time, a typically swinging slice of winter sunshine that sits somewhere between deep house, soul and future garage. As usual, there are some unusual choices of sounds - pedal steel, anyone - that help give the whole thing a unique, next-level feel. Old pal Carl Craig provides a tough but surprisingly smooth re-edit that's already seen some serious rotations on promo. It's a near-anthemic rub that emphasises the vocal and adds some seriously heavy sub-bass pressure. As if that wasn't enough, bonus cut "UHF" offers a milky mix of bouncy deep house and dewy-eyed Balearica.

Review: While it might be tricky in these open-minded times for Scuba to shatter preconceptions the way that he did with his Sub:Stance mix a few years ago, this compilation should be seen really as a celebration of the man himself as a DJ. After launching with a decidedly minimalist approach, the mix meanders between pacey techno, bluesy broken beat and rolling dubstep tempos. At times the flow feels unsteady, but then it just rings true that he put this mix together for himself. Without a dancefloor to look after, who knows where many of our favourite DJs might take us?

Review: This EP is Recloose's first new material in three years, and thankfully, it was worth the wait, as he proves himself to be a master of subtly alternating moods. "Electric Sunshine" is as bright as its title suggests, slowly unfolding its samples outwards from within, melding buttery bass tones with euphoric horns and strings to bring about a sense of soulful bliss. "Parquet" is similarly brilliant, combining staccato vocal snippets with rubbery synths and driving US garage inspired percussion. "Tecumseh" alternates between an abrasive techno bassline and a warmer vocal sample which unfurls itself into something completely unexpected. Despite the years he has on younger producers doing similar things, his productions sound as fresh as anything being released at the moment. Be sure to check them digital only bonus beats too! Highly recommended.

Review: Although he's proved himself to be a producer with great versatility over the last 15 years, little Matt 'Recloose' Chicoine has done in recent times has been quite as raw and exciting as his early work for Planet E. This second sampler for Rush Hour's excellent compilation of early Recloose singles, B-sides and demos offers solid proof. "MYM 230", first released way back in 1998, is true future jazz; a naive but far-sighted fusion of low-end house pulse, jazz percussion and the sweetest of vocal samples. Then there's "Can't Take It", Chicoine's first "big" tech-jazz hit for Planet E. Blessed with a wonderful vocal from the then unknown soul vocalist Dwele, it still sounds next level 11 years after it was first released.
