Review: Regent returns to Mutual Rytm after last year's "Coral Knife". The title track and "New Narrative" are not typical club techno. With a focus on throbbing, electronic basslines - in the case of "New Narrative", it sounds like a malfunctioning drone - and pulsating rhythms, they resemble contemporary iterations of ebm and industrial. "Ophaal" sees Regent revert to a techno sound, as he carves out dubby drums and a steely rhythm. On "Presence", he ventures farther down this path, deploying a swung rhythm and sheets of metallic percussion that recall Jay Denham. However, he also continues to explore alternative styles, and "Rheplica" and "Ree 54" both resound to filtered builds and house grooves.

Review: Having contributed to a split release last year, Regent now gets a full EP on Positivesource. "Occult" is based on a lean, pulsating rhythm that supports dreamy chords and a repetitive vocal sample, while "Khmera" is more insistent. Led by surging chords and a rolling groove, it also features the sound of a diva wailing in the background. Vocals also feature on the title track. This time, they are high-pitched and garage-influenced, unfolding over rolling drums and a powerful, Reese-style bass. The 'Broken Edit' of "Aphid Riot" veers farther towards the garage sound, combining the original's vocals and sub-bass with jittery beats and a stepping rhythm

Review: SHDW's label marks its twentieth release with this weighty compilation. Drawing on some of the most respected names in techno, volume three is full of peak-time bangers. There's the lean, rolling techno of Chlar's "Inside Us", while Dax J showers the listener with waves of acid tones on the steely, peak-time "Celestial Dub". The Advent's "Randomized" is a bruising and quite brilliant industrial techno workout. While Blawan's hyperactive "Don't You Dare Squawk At Me" hovers just below the 160 bpm mark, not all of the compilation is as intense. Vocals are mixed with chiming chords on Gary Beck's "Fold" and Z.I.P.P.O's "Broken Game" is a deep Detroit techno track.

Review: Next up on Blue Hour's label is a split release that focuses on emerging techno artists. Copenhagen's Neri J drops "Child Stay Wild", where reverse vocal samples are combined with dreamy melodies over a high-paced, rolling rhythm. Keeping it at a similar pace, Alpha Tracks' "Treeline" deploys a stripped back approach. Centred on a galloping groove and tribal drums, the arrangement is populated by mysterious sound scapes and an indistinct vocal narrative. Vil & Cravo's "Ripar" goes deeper, as dubbed out chords are fused with robust, steely drums. Rounding off the release is Regent's "Off Agenda" - a return to the territory explored on Neri J's contribution. On this occasion however, clattering percussion and a pulsating bass are combined with introspective synths.

Review: Regent has enjoyed a speedy ascent in just a short space of time, and has already released on ARTS and Planet Rhythm. This latest Regent release on Mutual Rytm, demonstrates why he's in such demand. "Encoder" is a deep techno affair, while "Brickyard" resounds to a wiry rhythm and features dreamy synths, harking back to the glory days of Dave Angel. Melodic elements also feature on "Driftage", but here the beats are tougher and the rhythm heavier. It marks a shift in direction on the EP. "Nocta" revolves around a stripped back rhythm, a menacing sub-bass and haunting vocal samples, while the title track is based on a more oppressive low end and tough kicks.

Review: Celebrating the first anniversary of their label, SHDW & Obscure Shape deliver a comprehensive compilation of high-octane techno. Despite most tracks clocking in over the 140 bpm mark, Federation Of Rytm II offers enough nuance and complexity to keep the listener engaged throughout. Lars Huismann's "New Way" resounds to dramatic strings and frenetic break beats, while Mark Broom offers a different perspective. The veteran producer's "Ole Ole" is a dense tribal affair that draws on the loop techno sound for inspiration. The compilation also features other, less predictable influences. Alpharisc's "Flow" draws on dub techno, while contributions from Regent and Invexis seamlessly integrate Detroit depth into peak-time rhythms.

Review: 2020 is a year that many people will want to forget, but as this compilation shows, it was still a time of remarkably creativity. This is borne out by Regent's "Drama", a crystalline, tranced out groove, while in stark contrast, Vinicius Honorio's "Rock Da House" is a visceral jacking affair that has echoes of DJ Rush. In between these two ends of the spectrum are deadly effective club techno contributions from Yan Cook, with the turbo bass-led "Order and Steve Parker's acid-heavy "Resonate". Best Of also impresses by covering wide range of styles - as A.Paul's rolling "Incidence" and Re:Axis bleepy "Unveil" ably demonstrate.

Review: Planet Rhythm has a consistent track record in supporting new artists and Iron Dreams is no exception. On "Dreama", this emerging producer combines high-pitched vocal samples with a pulsating, acid-soaked rhythm. It makes for a distinctive but effective dance floor techno track. "Iron Creek" is tougher, built on a rolling percussive framework, with Regent unleashing repetitive stabs - however, he counteracts this intensity with atmospheric synth washes. On "Sphaera" there are no such musical elements, as Regent deploys break beats and searing sirens to devastating effect. "Threads" sees this talented new producer go down another route, with an intense, pulsating bass peppered with razor sharp percussion.

Review: Planet Rhythm can always be relied on to deliver high-quality dance floor techno, and this split EP is a case in point. Kmyle's "Misanthrop" kick starts the release, with resonating drums and tight percussion making for an accessible, house-focused take on loopy techno. On "Jtpc 003", Joton & Positive Centre opt for a harder approach, with a pile-driving rhythm and lead-weight kicks combined for a heady combination. On "Lack of Control", Deep Dimension combine discordant tonal riffs with firing, sheet metal percussion to create an effective peak time track, while Yan Cook shows why he is one of Europe's most highly ratted producers with the swirling filters and pumping groove of "Displaced".
