Review: Dubbed 'the godfather of breakbeat' amongst other things, Rennie Pilgrim is a man who likes to sonically challenge himself. He likes to try new sounds (always released through his own TCR imprint, natch) and here he's back with a new 11 track long player. Music-wise it's all about frenetic free jazz - well, on opener "Attention" at least. Elsewhere we have crunchy hard rock ("Sanctified"), breaky electroclash ("Gladiator") and even pumping funky house ("Celeb").

Review: Rennie the re-animator - just when you think you know him, bang: along he comes with a brand new sound. Having nailed the nu funk and nu jungle he's now on some seriously sleazy US coastal bass tip. Hooking up with San Fran MC, "Fine Lady" is a bashy funk show that bangs with a filthy glitch habit and a tendency towards the two-step. Linuss himself serves up a bass mix which doesn't sound dissimilar to TCR's earlier releases. Rennie finishes the job with another interesting two-step. All wonky and off-beat with whispering synths in the background, it's yet another totally new sound from the breakbeat baron.

Review: Breakbeat don Pilgrem drops the tempo for a salubrious slice of soul that sits somewhere between broken beat and glitch hop. A far cry from the jungle breaks he's been munching on of late, this oozes groove and there appears to be some genuine sentiment to vocalist Francesca Guarino's soaring vocals. With deep, rumbling bass and a solid swing, this ticks a rather large amount of boxes. If you're more keen on Rennie's more traditional fare then head to his own Future Jungle remix. Or indeed the equally satisfying remixes from Afghan Headspin (synthy, euphoric and very ravey) and iLLOUT (dreamy, spaced out, downtempo). The perfect package.
