Review: Kompakt's 23rd Total compilation fearlessly explores the dance music realm once again with a curated lineup that ranges from deep minimalism to radiant disco-infused tracks and more. 23 kicks off with Kollmorgen's moody and atypical Kompakt cut "Muddy" leading into the subtle chimes of Argia's "No Concept". Some bite size Italo pop comes via Michael Mayer's "Talmi" alongside a heavier Cologne-infused "Duration" made with legendary cohort Barnt, while there's some new wave to be found from Stephan Barnem & Futuristant alongside some genre-defying "Cinematic Dance" by Jorg Burger. Summer hits also come from Rex The Dog, and John Tejada who drops in with "Duration", before the compilation concludes with Reinhard Voigt's classic vocal and tone combi: "Endlich XXL"

Review: Kompakt recently re-released scene stalwart Rex The Dog's core back catalogue - an artist that has become an integral part of the label's story. They decided to have a few of the British artist's favourite producers rework some of his renowned singles, and the results come as 'Versions'. This collection of three remixes from a varied crew of producers features Irishman Krystal Klear, who accentuates the strobe lights and smoke machine on his euphoric rendition of last year's thriller "Vortex", Madrid-based Italian Bawrut delivers his idiosyncratic style of nu-disco on his remix of "Sicko" and Viennese producer Wolfram Eckert delivers a mesmerising rework of "Circulate".

Review: Known primarily for his releases on Kompakt, Rex The Dog branches out with an EP on Soft Computing. The title track represents a more measured style than is usual for this project, but the same underlying aesthetic still applies as throbbing bass, crisp drums and subtle builds prevail. On "Mine Raiders", he picks up the pace, thanks to some urgent drum programming, a wiry rhythm and atmospheric whooshes, but it doesn't quite hit the same heady climax as earlier material like "Frequency" and "Prototype". Ejeca's remix of "Housing" marks a significant shift in style, with dub chords and a frenetic techno groove prevailing.

Review: Cologne powerhouse Kompakt have continually defined a unique aesthetic as label - deep, atmospheric and absolutely evocative. For the 19th edition of their revered Total series - The Voigt Brothers & Co. curate another splendid compilation featuring the very best in international electronic music from the last year, taking in a wide variety of styles, tempos moods and grooves - yet all with the label's distinct taste. Highlights (and there's many!) came courtesy of: local Gewolbe Club resident Jonathan Kaspar with the mesmerising dancefloor drama of "Renard", label co-founders Tobias Thomas & Michael mayer teaming up on the sexy lo-slung groove antics of "Total Anders", label staple and all round Berlin legend Sascha Funke delivers a typically quirky and oddball groove on "Aus Der Lamang". Elsewhere, you can get your tunnel vision on with the ever reliable Rex The Dog on "Vortex", the ascendant Anii from Poland takes you deep into the rainforest on the tribal trance of "Ride The Tiger" and ANNA from Brazil provides some dystopian narratives for the dancefloor on "Remembrance".

Review: UK legend Jake Williams returns to Kompakt under his Rex The Dog alias, following up last year's terrific Crasher EP. His new one "Vortex" is a track that made a sizeable impression on label co-head Michael Mayer - who claims that its retro futurism made him feel nostalgic and recalled a zeitgeist of electronic music from decades past. Indeed Willians was capable, having been active throughout all those decades under may acclaimed aliases, and indeed the track's hypnotic and driving groove will get you! -All mesmerising melodies with razor sharp modular pulsations that will sonically transfix you as much as it did to Mayer. This is supported by the trippy and tunnelling minimal funk of "Elektromekanik" on the flip.

Review: It's that time again: Cologne institution Kompakt return with their annual round up of what's hot in contemporary house and techno - all with the distinct hallmarks in harmony with their aesthetic: deep, intelligent and absolutely evocative. Rest assured that all the usual suspects appear - label stalwarts such as Jorg Burger, Jurgen Paape, Gui Boratto and of course head honchos the Voigt brothers. Elsewhere there are some regulars and newbies alike such as Los Angeleno Sonns on the sun-kissed and tripped-out "Tame" (feat Beesh), veteran John Tejada with the bold melodics of "Detector" (a cut from his brilliant new Dead Start Program LP), lo-slung cosmo-balearica by Ghost Vision on "Zuul" and the legendary Jake Williams aka Rex The Dog on the epic dance floor drama of "Crasher". Another tremendously curated compilation that's essential listening.

Review: We're always enthralled to hear new work by legend Jake Williams. Throughout his illustrious career spanning two decades, he's presented the most impressive takes on everything from trance (under the infamous JX moniker), prog house as the short lived Oblik and now in his greatest incarnation as Rex The Dog - where for the last several years he's presented some dynamic takes on techno and electro by use of his deep modular setup. On his new one "Crasher" he serves up some moody dancefloor drama like only this veteran can. A tunnelling and bleepy sonar transmission that you could imagine label head honcho Michael Mayer dropping mid set. Second offering "Hold It/Control It" is a more uplifting affair with a good dose of funk that will have you bopping away to its blips and beeps and jacking vocals.

Review: Jake Williams has been fairly productive since bringing his Rex The Dog project to Kompakt in early 2015. Even so, Teufelsberg marks his first single release of 2016. The title track sees him in fine form, lacing woozy, stretched-out lead lines and dreamy pads atop a thrusting, Italo-disco influenced, arpeggio groove. It also features a peach of a breakdown, which is guaranteed to get the spine tingling before the groove returns with a vengeance. Flipside "Shortwave" sees Williams combining Bobby Peru bleeps and Moroder style arpeggio synthesizers to devastating effect, a clutch of notable, repeated vocal samples rounding off a sweaty, floor-friendly concoction.

Review: As sure as night follows day, every year Kompakt releases an installment of the Total series. Now at its sixteenth volume, the compilation still manages to bring together the best bits from the Cologne label's catalogue. From the dreamy textures and spiky off rhythms of Kaytlin Aurelia Smith's take on The Field's "Reflecting Lights" to the woozy vocals and pitter pattering break beats on Weval's "I Donat Need It" to the stripped back but evocative house of Patrice Baumel's take on Blond:ish's "Endless Games" and the throbbing techno reshape of Coma's "Lora", the full range of the Kompakt emotional spectrum is audible here.

Review: The mysterious, canine-loving producer delivers three slabs of euphoric but tough techno for Mi-chael Mayer's label. The title track is full of the kind of spine-tingling hooks and melodies that this project has long been associated with, but on this occasion, it is delivered against the backdrop of a steely, spiky rhythm. On "Musik Hypnotises", all semblance of melody is absent, and in its place there is a rough, acid-soaked techno workout. Finally, "Wasp Factory" inhabits a similar space, with heavy, warped beats and nasty 303 riffs propelling this dog lover into a much more abrasive sound than before.

Review: Kompakt's annual label sampler returns for a 15th year, gathering together another 24 highlights from the long running Cologne imprint's ever growing back catalogue. As usual, there are numerous styles represented - from the spiraling dancefloor synth-pop of Kolsch and punk-influenced techno of Audion, to the soft focus melodies and hypnotic beats of Gui Boratto, and the intoxicating global electronics of Jurgen Paap - as well as much-played tracks from some of the imprint's most notable talents (see the contributions from Rex The Dog, Superpitcher, Matias Aguayo and John Tejada, whose "Two O One" is a tuneful techno delight).

Review: Back in the mid 2000s, Jake 'Rex The Dog' Williams was touted for future greatness on the back of a string of singles that joined the dots between Kraftwerk, synth-pop, '80s electro and melodious nu-disco. Somewhere along the way, he lost his mojo, and the releases began to dry up. Happily, Sicko - his first single for two years - sees him back at his imaginative, mesmerising best. The title track bobs and weaves brilliantly, lacing trippy, stuttering electronics and yearning chords on top of a sparse, beatbox electro-influenced Balearic house groove. "Korgasmatron" is arguably even better, with Williams brilliantly fusing dirty, bubbling bottom-end electronics and warped acid lines with a killer, rave style vocal hook.
