Review: As expected, Rekids has assembled a crack team of remixers to put their stamp on Jerome Sydenham, Fatima Njai and Mario Punchard's brilliant Afro-house-goes-electro cover of Kraftwerk's 'Trance Europe Express'. Gerd Jansen steps up first, delivering vocal and instrumental takes that brilliantly re-imagine the track as a Moroder-influenced, retro-futurist disco-house treat (think sequenced bass, Chic-style guitar licks, punchy drums and sweeping synth-strings). Naturally, Ricardo Villalobos takes a totally different approach, crafting a wonky-but-bouncy new rhythm out of Punchard's percussion and his own medical-grade kick-drums, before adding all manner of mind-mangling noises. It's one of his funkier reworks of recent times, but still formidably out-there and unusual. That's a great thing, by the way - it's a hugely impressive rework.

Review: Following up an impressive debut on Midland's ReGraded label last year, London-based DJ and producer Jay Duncan collaborates with saxophonist Ben Vince on her debut release for Phantasy. "In Limbo" continues in her pursuit of trippy and minimalistic grooves, on which immaculately programmed polyrhythms play centre stage. Similarly, the splintered beat attack of "Anti-Purgatorio" is at once disorienting as it is mesmerising. If those two tracks were not impressive enough on their own, it comes with a deeply meditative remix by legend Ricardo Villabos, who as you could imagine adds his midas touch as always.

Review: The celebration of Dekmantel's tenth anniversary draws to a close with a memorable release. Originally released almost twenty years ago, Ricardo Villalobos' interpretations of Tony Allen's "Asiko (In A Silent Mix)" have not lost their lustre. Taking the Afrobeat pioneer's organic drums and uplifting horns down a hollowed out pathway, Villalobos throws in rickety percussion, reverberating effects and warm washes of guitar over a lopsided, lazy rhythm to give Allen's sound a magical, voodoo sensibility. It says a lot about Villalobos' abilities that he can make these free-flowing psychedelic grooves work in his DJ sets - for us mere mortals, hearing this release in its full 29-minute glory is a spiritual experience in itself.

Review: Shangaan Shake is the complete document of the remixes Honest Jon's commissioned to pit leftfield Western artists against the Shangaan electro of South Africa. It's an all-star cast, from house heroes to dubstep tinkerers. Mark Ernestus turns out an elegant slice of dub techno, while DJ Rashad and RP Boo throw down a sweaty slice of footwork action, and Peverelist plies a typically complex rhythm at a slower, seductive tempo. Out of all the remixers, Theo Parrish is the one unafraid to maintain the original BPM, which leaves his remix stark against the multitude of other tracks. Essential.
