Review: Holy moly! Riko Dan takes us deep down into the trenches with this militant version excursion on Liondub International. All flavours, all fire: Original Sin blasts off with a mid 2000s tasting tear-up, Vital Techniques brings the bumping bassline 4x4 action while P Skinna streamlines the vibe with the purring drill take. Last but not least we hear 'War Ting' in all its gritty original glory. Four takes, four stories - show us your war face!
Review: Nuusic's MC-championing Dub Culture series heats up with two absolute donnies... Fresh from his debut album Bad From Morning, Sub-liminal bossman Agro tags in one of the UK's biggest and most respected MCs Riko Dan for this mean and murky tear-up 'Warlord'. Powered by a full-throttle turbine bassline and spacious, swinging breaks, there's plenty of room for Riko's war talk as the track gets heavier and heavier as it builds. Complete with an instrumental for added mixing creativity, Nuusic smash the jacksy off this once again.
Review: Liondub have a history of blending ferocious cross-genre sounds with penetrating vocal lines, and this EP from Lost City and Riko Dan is no exception. 'Soundboy Calling' is the main item, a stepping, punchy number with an almost afrobeat vibe to the drums, a funky groove that belies its swelling bassline and frenetic energy. There's a JNGL remix and instrumental versions of both, and the JNGL flip amps up the movement and injects a tonne more energy, turning the original into a straight-up breakbeat banger. Vibes inside.
Review: Nuusic are a fairly new label that really don't mess around and their output tends to land on the tougher, more dancefloor orientated end of the spectrum. Akuma by Teej and featuring Jappa, Disrupta and Riko Dan continues that trend, with four big cuts that are definitely set to blow up the dance. 'Akuma' has a distinctly Serum vibe to it, with a stuttering jungle break and a warped, stabby bassline that contorts itself around every corner of the range. 'War Cry' takes things more rolling with a wicked, snapping snare and a wobbling wall of sine basses to back it up, bringing a lovely clean feeling that's also on '16 Speakers'. Wicked.
