Review: Flexout's XOU series continues to roll out in underground, future-focused style, this time with Rise who lays down four grizzly old grooves that tap deep into D&B tradition while still pushing forward. For many the highlight cut will be 'Everything Changed'. Imagine The Sauce and Mefjus getting jiggy with each other and that's the vibe. Review: As 2023 starts to wrap up, Manchester label Nuusic take the time to reflect on the year they've had and bring their many releases together in one comprehensive collection. Looking back over key releases such as Guzi's album Goldstone Life, Grimesy's 'Voices' and Conrad Subs' 'Don't Blame The DJ', there's a powerful range of party starters, bubblers, skankers and slappers. To pick just a few highlights from 30 is pretty hectic, but Tweakz' jazzy planet stamper 'Love & loyalty', Rise's creeped out 'Intertwined' and Guzi & Epicentre's walloping 'Rate My Switch' are a great place to start. Review: Gonda & Rise join the Invicta fray with another sampler from the label's '1 Year Of Invicta' anniversary release. 'Hold Up' takes the lead. Originally a free download from Gonda last year, Rise switches up the beats and gives the bassline a wry twist while 'Bull' sees them linking for an all-out bassline slap-about. Big swing on the beats, cheeky on the riff and venomous bars. Invicta smash it once again.

Review: Following releases from the label founder Nooch and a VA featuring a whole host of new-gen talent, Ransaked present their first artist EP in the form of 'The Funk' from young Bristol producer RISE. Four tracks heavy, complete with a remix from Dunk, it's RISE's most comprehensive release to date and it ranges from the subtly bumpy funk of 'Steady Blazin' to the outright grizzly behaviour of the jungle-flavoured 'Feel It'. Both the original and Dunk's remix of 'The Funk' more than live up to their name, too. An exceptional release from a very promising new label.

Review: RISE is on Liondub International and is giving all of us a lesson in how to produce tough, stripped back sonics which carry more attitude than a charging bull. 'Crossbow' is the best example of this, as a no-nonsense drum line penetrates a precisely placed array of gully bass pulls and hair-rising low-frequency pushes. 'Feline' is more classic jump-up, as a potent blast of stabs combine into the type of hands-in-the-air dancefloor action we've come to expect from the genre. Proper stuff.
