Review: Rivet's latest album, L+P-2, serves as a poignant and comforting testament to the artist's resilience in the face of profound personal loss. Following his acclaimed debut, On Feather and Wire, the album was initially set to be released on Editions Mego, but tragedy struck with the sudden passing of Peter 'Pita' Rehberg, the label's legendary owner. This loss, coupled with the diagnosis of Rivet's beloved dog and companion Lilo with incurable cancer, drove him to create in the midst of heartbreak. L+P-2 emerges from a place of despair but remarkably offers solace. Rivet's unique ability to infuse machines with human warmth shines through, with distinctive melodies, gnarly basslines, and captivating drum patterns. The album, while born from grief, encapsulates the resilience of life and music, where melodies and basslines dance hand in hand, sometimes parting ways like dear friends in the journey of existence.

Review: Since emerging on Frozen Border offshoot Naked Index back in 2011, Rivet has become a name synonymous with the current wave of Swedish techno, gracing the Skudge Presents label with two fine 12"s, remixing Tyler Friedman, Dungeon Acid and Ben Sims, and generally demonstrating a capacity to produce both the merciless and the offbeat. His return to Kontra-Musik sees a continuation of the sound showcased on his Driftwood release for Skudge Presents last November, and is so titled because it highlights the plight suffered by some 20,000 bears in captivity who are daily tapped for their gall. Skewed vocals characterise the release throughout, the three parts, whose house-inspired synth textures are some of the meatiest work yet from the Swede.

Review: While it might be tricky in these open-minded times for Scuba to shatter preconceptions the way that he did with his Sub:Stance mix a few years ago, this compilation should be seen really as a celebration of the man himself as a DJ. After launching with a decidedly minimalist approach, the mix meanders between pacey techno, bluesy broken beat and rolling dubstep tempos. At times the flow feels unsteady, but then it just rings true that he put this mix together for himself. Without a dancefloor to look after, who knows where many of our favourite DJs might take us?
