Review: Hitting that funked-up 90s vibe like it ain't no thang, Roberto Rodriguez's turn on Freerange bumps and flexes in all the right ways, slamming in some cheery piano chords and DX7 organ riffs while the drums swing jauntily on "Dance Like Nobody's Watching". With the high register notes coming on like Glenn Underground, there's a feeling of uplifting jazz woven into the bright and bashy elements. "Oxymoron" heads for a deeper territory, plying dubby chords and diva vocal snippets amidst a chunky beat with some sly MIDI sax thrown in for good measure. Black Madonna turn out a remix of the title track that tempers the boundless energy of the original by stripping things down and letting a filter take control of the central piano riff.

Review: Fred Everything and Mike Fresco's Lazy Days Recordings label continues to celebrate a decade of dancefloor domination, this time with the second installment in their 10 By Ten EP series. This time round, Roberto Rodriguez and Nacho Marco are an the controls, with the latter's "That Smile" delivering a brilliant fusion of clanking, analogue-sounding drums, twisted acid lines and smooth deep house chords. Rodriguez flips the script on "Giving It All", dropping a warm and hazy deep house shuffler built around immersive chords, snappy drum machine handclaps and yearning, pitched-down vocal samples. It lacks a little of the stripped-back energy of Nacho Marco's rub, but more than makes up for that in toasty beauty.

Review: Since launching last year, disco/house website House of Disco's in-house (sorry) imprint has proved to be a rich source of atmospheric, groove-heavy slo-mo and midtempo tackle. Here they deliver four more sparkling cuts for the dancefloor. The Treatment's "Waves" builds a delightfully touchy-feeling synth-house jam around the groove from Surface's "Falling In Love", while Satin Jackets deliver a cosy, piano house-inspired nu-disco sparkler. Roberto Rodriguez opts for a more Balearic nu-disco feel on "Mustat Varjot", while Debonair turns a familiar disco staple into a rising disco/house banger - all twisted vocal samples, intricate percussion and heavy low-end bounce. Job done.

Review: Frankfurt-based imprint Connaisseur drop the third annual Grand Cru compilation, bulging with goodies from the deeper end of tech and minimal house. Grand Cru - a term no doubt already known to the wine drinkers among you - refers to an elegant bottle or vineyard. And 2010 is proving to be a fine vintage; from the glitchy beat and ethereal vocals on Tom Demac's "Sky Swatches", to the meandering bassline of Franklin De Costa's "Futureboy" and "Jericho Horns" by label stalwart Afrilounge, which sounds like a wonderfully dirty afterhours version of Jesse Rose's "Touch My Horn". And be sure to check out "Black Martin", a rare foray into house music for drum & bass producer Dee Pulse.
