Review: When a label as consistent and as well rounded as Shogun Audio announce a 'Classics' release it obviously sends shivers around the drum & bass community. It's hard to imagine condensing thirteen years of dominance into a minimized box of thirty classics, but just looking at the tracklisting is awe-inspiring. We see classic reappearances from the likes of Friction, Spor, Break, Icicle, Rockwell, Spectrasoul, Alix Perez, Camo & Krooked and that's not even half of the names involved. To break it down simply, this compilation summarizes why Shogun hold such a legendary status within the scene, through incredible consistency and magnificent diversity of sound.

Review: What with Critical celebrating their ten year anniversary this year it's only right and proper that there should be a landmark album, looking back on their success to date. Enter Critical X; featuring a carefully curated selection from Critical's past, present and future (watch out for some cracking unreleased material), this is a must buy for deeper D&B heads. Stand outs from across the 16-track album include Breakage's awesome "Staggered Dub", Spectrasoul's iconic "Organiser", and of course jungle revivalist anthem Bladerunner's "Back To The Jungle". Make sure you check out the remixes from Mefjus and Enei, which add the final cherry on the cake for this superb and frankly rather essential release.

Review: Kicking off with a VIP of one of the killer 90s jungle nostalgia anthems of 2010 - Bladerunner's "Back To The Jungle" - it's a great start to the next Critical compilation. Moving through the tough, percussive sounds of Break, soulful dub tinged efforts of Breakage, the blissed out Calibre in "Rockafella" to the sounds of man-of-the-moment, hotly tipped Enei with his fantastic "Forgive Me" around the halfway point, it's immediately apparent why Kasra's label has garnered such respect from his peers. Lomax - one half of Loadstar - provides a deeper incarnation to his Ram bangers in "Innocent X" and elsewhere, Rockwell's "Underpass" makes a re-emergence as does ubiquitous anthem "Redlines" which closes this utterly superb compilation.

Review: Roni Size and Rockwell? Yes please! Two dons of their own respective games, both with very distinctive sounds; this really is a magic moment for Shogun Audio. It's one of those rare collaborations where you can hear both artists clearly with full complements to each other; Roni's off-beat bass funk, Rockwell's anarchy, both of their sense of pace and momentum. Slappy, steppy and shocky, this is a perfect example of how good collaborations can be.

Review: The ever-rising star of 2010/11 and master of experimental beats brings us the follow up EP to his superlative Noir EP which landed on Critical around this time last year. In the title track "Aria", Rockwell blends glitchy, cinematic rhythms with sonorous, blissed out vocals and cooling instrumentals. Next, "Live For The Moment" adds a dash of funk, whilst talented duo Ulterior Motive's remix of the aforementioned "Noir" is nothing short of superlative, as they toughen it up with a super dark b-line smashing breaks and that iconic Virus-meets-Subtitles tenacity. A collab with Hemlock owner Untold backs this up in "Rehekou Sunrise", adding a shimmy of samples and soulful bliss as we reach the end of the EP.

Review: Maximum Obsolete Medium: Rockwell returns to his burgeoning label with a bunch of pals and sacks full of fire. Antipodean arsonists The Upbeats join the fray first for the hair-scorching sizzler "Level". All rasping, high voltage sizzles and singes, if this doesn't have your dancefloor on their knees begging for mercy you're in the wrong line of work. Similar exclamations can be made about "Block" as Rockers heads to Germany for a grizzly, off-beat raffish tet-a-tet with Phace. Up another level...

Review: Well well well, what do we have here? A lesser spotted Rockwell album! The last time we spotted one of these was 2015, which is a whole lifetime ago considering how much has happened in the world. Sir Tommy Rockers remains consistent, though. Still right on the cutting edge of the D&B sound with that sound that's both experimental and crushes dancefloors, Low Art reflects where he's at during these turbulent times. Ranging from the hyper emotional drama of 'Estranged' with LaMeduza to the gritty, neuro influences of 'Pink Panther' (with Settle Down), this is a powerful and honest snapshot from one of drum & bass music's most consistent and authoritative producers. Artful.
