Review: Say 'Toolroom' to most people these days and they'll perhaps think first of peak-time tech-house stompers, but there's always been more to the label than that. Their 'Poolside' series, for instance, has been showcasing the more lounge-y, soulful and/or disco-infused side of house since 2014, and if you're a fan of such styles then this latest installment, packing cuts from the likes of Opolopo, Random Soul, Sebb Junior, Per QX, Saison and Ross Couch plus a host of up-and-comers, is unlikely to disappoint. The jazz-funk nouveau of Opolopo's 'Ginsu Knife' and Vertigini's garage-tinged 'Over You' are among the highlights of a collection with nary a Pavlovian snare roll or cheesy rave stab in sight.

Review: Two years after his inaugural Travelogue album, Ross delivers a long-awaited follow-up. Naturally, it's business as usual; Ross's ability to roll out pristine, groovy deep house needs no questioning. The entire set bumps and boogies with subtlety and sophistication, but highlights include the Farina-style jazz struts of "The Traveling Man", the twisty kick drums and minor-key softness of "Destination" and the Joey Negro-level soul vibes of the finale "Wide Open Spaces".

Restore My Soul EP
Restore My Soul - (4:02) Hot
Table For Two - (3:38)
Street Soldier - (4:09)
Played by: Ross Couch
Review: Largely famed for his deep house skills, Ross has made some rather successful departures into slo-mo pastures in the last year as proved by "Dusk Till Dawn", a cut that hogged the downtempo charts last year. "Restore My Soul" is a shimmering soul swooner oozing key and horn perfection. "Table For Two" takes us back to prohibition Chicago with decadent flare and party panache while "Street Soldier" trickles itself down a more emotional, sombre downtempo route. Think early Bonobo or Avalanches. Lovely. Feeling frazzled? Spend a bit of time on this Couch.
