Review: Masters of melodic, atmospheric and - whisper it quietly - progressive house music All Day I Dream can always be relied upon to deliver the goods, especially on their twice-yearly 'sampler' compilations. The imprint's latest volume, the fourth winter-themed set in total, is another expansive, action-packed affair featuring no less than 16 cuts capable of warming the cockles of your heart. After starting with an ear-pleasing chunk of bouncy, tuneful sonic bliss from Sebastien Leger and Tim Green, the set confidently rolls between richly percussive deep house warmth (LEGATO, Double Touch), hazy early morning wooziness (Zone+), glassy-eyed vocal loveliness (David Orin), fluid broken house (Padre) tech-tinged, dubbed-out hypnotism (Ramiro Drisdale).
Newman (I Love) - "Menina Que Passa" - (8:36) 120 BPM
Essay - "Archangel" - (9:23) 126 BPM
Modd - "Evening Fog" - (9:11) 122 BPM
Review: A sampler collection here from All Day I Dream, the label set up in 2011 by Lee Burridge and Matthew Dekay to explore "beautiful, emotional and melancholic shades of house and techno". What you get are 13 tracks coming from that part of the spectrum where deep house and ambient collide, with just a hint of prog and the very deepest trance in the mix too - tracks that will be equally at home in the warm-up, on weary 6am floors or chillin' on the sofa. Standouts include Fulltone's 'A Whole Lot Of Winters', one of collection's more overtly floor-friendly cuts, and Hermanez's deceptively funky 'Ensina'.
Review: Crosstown Rebels boss Damian Lazarus has described Spirits, the label's new annual compilation series, as "a fresh psychedelic journey into the mind". While that might be over-egging the (Christmas) pudding a bit, there's definitely a deep, humid and occasionally hallucinatory feel to many of the showcased tracks, which mostly sit somewhere between lucid deep house and skewed tech-house wonkiness. Wisely, Lazarus has chosen tracks from new and rising stars of his various labels, with highlights coming from the likes of Magit Cacoon (the bass-heavy, Innervisions-esque "Nonsense"), Raw District (the foreboding last night hypnotism of "Another Way", featuring folksy vocalist Alice Rose) and Nico Stajan and David Mayer, whose brilliant "Killing Your Lover" layers an eyes-closed Jan Blomqvist vocal over dense but groovy tribal drums.
