Review: Two of Spearhead's most consistent liquid beatmakers are back on the Norfollk-based label and they're doing so with their signature funky style in tow. Their sampling and ear for musicality are unrivalled, and this release seeks to channel the legacy of soul music through a format of drum & bass. The first track - 'Whisper - is firm in the percussion but frivolous in its sampling, with a stabby brass note interspersing its otherwise quite barebones approach, a less-is-more methodology that's replicated throughout, including the title track 'Clarksdale', which is just effortlessly smooth. 'Deliteful' amps up the funk, whilst SoulMotion jumps on the remix for track four and makes things super deep. Lovely stuff.

Review: Spearhead are coming out with a huge compilation that seeks to be a statement of intent for 2020, combining a load of new tracks with some of the choicest cuts from the Spearhead back catalogue. There is old school talent like Need For Mirrors, Bcee, Carlito & Addiction & Saikon, as well as recruits from the new school like Whiney, Black Barrel, Monrroe and Walk:r, all of whom have done a wicked job walking the Spearhead stylistic line between hard and soft. Need For Mirrors' 'Zxana' is the ideal example; it's stripped back and minimalist in its percussion but expansive in the low-frequencies, with a hypnotic feeling of movement and a seriously solid piece of sound design. The rest of the LP is typically epic as well, so shout out to the Norwich crew.
Review: Two of D&B's premium soul merchants are back, this time on the renowned Spearhead imprint. If you're a fan of Lenzman or similar artists, you'll love this. It's all about vibrancy, about reality and about the dulcet smoothness of sampling and instrumentation. There's no big, cheesy synths or tacky build ups, everything is pristine and the focus is on genuine soul, not manufactured hype. 'But I Found' is our favourite, a sublime jungle stepper with perfect double bass and oodles of atmosphere, brass sweeps abound and it's proper head nodding stuff. Absolutely beautiful.

Review: Total Science dust off the CIA Deepkut controls for their first outing of the year. It comes courtesy of Vienna's Roy Green & Protone and it's an all-out collabo doozy. Russia's Electrosoul System taps in for "Resting", a slice of high voltage soul, loaded with added frazzled, dizzying textures. French Mexican Joakuim enters the fray for the deliciously breezy "Neptune" while long-time collaborator Monologue joins the fun with the disarming mystic hurricane stepper "Prince Vlad". Finally respected Welsh soul soldier Pennygiles completes the set with some divine piano tickling, woozy hornage and restrained growls on "Suburbs". Four absolutely timeless pieces of work here... Not to be slept upon!

Review: A seriously stylish first track sees Cutworks break out the bass for an elegant start to this double-headed release. Bursting with whomping bassy fruitiness underneath gorgeous layers of rolling beats and intriguing vocals (cut and severely pitch-shifted from "Oops (Oh My)" by Tweet/Missy Elliott if we're not mistaken), it's the perfect tune to whip crowds into a hard-stomping frenzy. "Deep Inside" begins on beautiful form and continues into further depths of stunning double bass and live instrumentation all tied together by crisply captivating production. When Roygreen and Protone get together, it's magic. Don't miss out.

Review: Bryan Gee's bumper Club Sessions series continues like the drum & bass juggernaut it is with volume five. Since appearing on the scene back in 2005 with an album packed with exclusives from Roni Size, Fresh, Calibre and dBridge, the label have come back stronger than ever with their latest instalment. Featuring modern heroes Need For Mirrors, Peshay and Eveson alongside fresh talent from the likes of Pennygiles, Duoscience, Atlantic Connection and Flaco, each track is a reassurance that drum & bass from the Liquid V corner of the scene is still going strong. At 28 tracks plus two mixes featuring MCs Stamina and TRAC, how could you say no?

Review: Innerground continues its reign over the soulful and jazzy D&B world with a storming collection of shining new music from some of the scene's finest. Arguably the greatest liquid collab duo in history Marky & Makoto pair up for not one but two massive tracks, heading up the EP in 'we mean business' style. Also featuring their love for jazz funk are Austria's own RoyGreen & Protone, blasting that groove with a lush, retro feel, as does Brazilian newcomer Level 2. Liquid veteran Submorphics drops by to reveal a sweet summer anthem in "Hazel Street" and rounding off the comp is newcomer T>I with a hypnotic delve through nasty electronic percussion. A true indication of where DJ Marky's label is right now, if you're a fan of the genre you'd be foolish to miss out.
