Review: SlothBoogie's latest missive brings together two stalwarts of the Italian house scene, Ruff Stuff and Bress Underground, for the first time. The EP begins with two solo excursions from the former, with the warming, sub-bass-and-organ-heavy tactility of 'Foundations' being followed by the driving, spacey and gently acid-flecked throb of 'Sliding Sine', which sounds like an early morning anthem in the making. We're then treated to two top-notch collaborative cuts. 'The Community' is a rambunctious, energy-packed workout marked out by swinging, sweat-soaked house drums, sampled preacher-man vocals and drowsy deep house chords, while 'Something About It' is a fiendishly sub-heavy blend of Grant Nelson style speed garage and wide-eyed deep house.

Review: SlothBoogie's 'Dancing With Friends' series, a compilation strand showcasing cuts from both label artists and invited guests, has firmly established itself as 'one to watch'. Happily, the third volume in the series is as on-point as its predecessors. There's much to admire across the 16 tracks on show, with our picks of a very strong bunch including the sun-soaked deep house heat of Philippa's sample-heavy 'Chet's Vibe', the bumpin', post-hip-house hedonism of 'Take Back' by Sudden Moves, the dream house-goes-Detroit techno hypnotism of Ruff Stuff's 'Stab Culture', the deep acid house excellence of Baby Rollen's 'Study in Serenity' and the throbbing excellence of Donald Dust's 'Aftercare'. Throw in killer cuts from a couple of better-known artists - see the contributions from Demuir and the Revenge - and you've got another genuinely must-check release.

Review: Ruff Stuff - the recording alias of Berlin-based Italian Gianfranco "Nanni" Barnaba - has long been associated with weighty, energy-packed, sample-heavy workouts of the sort that work wonders during peak-time sets. There's plenty of this kind of techno-tempo, sample-house action on Barnaba's latest untitled EP (his seventh to date). There's a kind of bass-heavy deep house-meets-disco-house flex to opener 'High Club Alive', while 'Badass Groove' sees him reach for rubbery, New Jersey house bass, classic house organ sounds and seductive synth strings. The mid-90s US garage organ sounds return - this time accompanied by bubbly acid lines - on revivalist Italo-house number 'Growler', before a fine EP draws to a close via the hypnotic, all-action deep techno warmth of 'Solid Fragments'.

Review: Since debuting in 2014, Italian-in-Berlin Ruff Stuff has become a must-check name amongst those who like their house music bold, bumping, garage-influenced and shot through with nods to classic cuts of the 1990s. On 'Morale', his first outing for the This Is Not label, Ruff Stuff once again strides forward confidently, adding hands-aloft piano stabs, bubbly electronics and deliciously wayward motifs to an energetic, classic-sounding bassline and jackin', sweat-soaked house beats. Alfa Comae steps up to provide the first remix, delivering a take that's deeper and dreamier, but also tougher and more intense thanks to the presence of some seriously ragged TB-303 acid lines, before We.Amps ratchets up the jack factor whilst retaining many of Ruff Stuff's original elements.

Review: If, like this writer, you're most at home in that part of the musical spectrum where deep house and garage collide, then stop whatever you're doing and buy this EP immediately - trust me, you are NOT going to be disappointed! From the vocal cut-ups, chunky bass and Rhodes chords of Flaze's 'Resolve' to Toysin's dense, shufflin' 'You Don't Pass The Exam', via the deep, mellow Mr Fingers/Ron Trent-like vibes of Ruff Stuff's 'Gut Feel' and, best of all, the Marvin-noddin' UKG-ish bounce and roll of Bress Underground's 'I Bet You're Wondrin', if you're not feeling this, we have to ask - do you even house, bro?

Review: The joy of the digital download editions of the DJ Kicks series is not so much the included DJ mix - which, of course, is invariably excellent - but the accompanying full-length, DJ friendly tracks gathered by that edition's selector, in this case Elevate Berlin record store owner (and fine producer) Cinthie Christl. Her mostly club-friendly selections are little less than superb, moving from driving, organ-and-bass-rich U.S-style house (Terrence Parker, Niles Cooper, Sandil, her own exclusive 'Organ (DJ Kicks)') and life-affirming piano-house (Ruff Stuff), to deep two-step (Camion Bazar), slamming techno-funk (Anil Aras), dusty techno (Adriyano), deep breakbeat wooziness (Ben Hauke) and deep, dreamy acid jack ('Anna Wall'). In other words, it's a blindingly good selection - and Cinthie's DJ mix is wildly entertaining, too.

Review: One of London's most highly respected underground electronic music crews, SlothBoogie encompasses a DJ collective, radio show, a regular party series and of course a label. For their 12th edition they've got Southern Italian native and Berlin dweller Nanni Barnaba aka Ruff Stuff, who is a fine example of nominative determinism. With a penchant for tough 808 drum patterns, and arrangements which echo the spirit of 90's Chicago - he was the perfect choice. The Dubby Tales EP features the emotive "Still Warm" and it's melancholic Larry Heard/Alleviated vibe, more chunky Juno 106 basslines await on the acid inflected soul of "Agosto" and "Moto Continuo" channels the hi-tech soul of classic Detroit.

Review: To celebrate notching up ten years in the game, London blog and party-turned-record label SlothBoogie has decided to offer-up their most ambitious release to date: an epic collection of previously unheard cuts from a mixture of imprint regulars and like-minded friends. There's naturally plenty to set the pulse racing throughout, with highlights including the sparkling jazz-funk-meets-deep house sunshine of Levan's "U R Beautiful In The Face", the deep, breakbeat-driven dreaminess of Philippa's "That's What I Mean By Free", the piano solo-heavy disco-house bump of Leatherette's "Your Love", and the dub disco-meets-acid house heaviness of "Rewind Run" by Pablot. Throw in similarly impressive contributions from Kassian, Luvless, Casino Times and Soul Wun (the classic jazz-house of "Thank You, St Germain") and you have a must-have collection.
