SAMA also adds a hypnotic stream of consciousness vocal sample that sets "Distorted.." apart from typical club techno. This unusual approach comes into its own on the "Intro Tool" version; with the kick drums stripped away, it's all about the mysterious vocal sample and cacophony of dubbed out effects, which underlines the fact that this rising Dutch star isn't going to follow the conventional path.

Review: Monolith is Kraftek's annual state of the nation techno compilation and Volume 2 focuses on tough, trippy techno. Oscar Escapa's "Molecule" is a heavy, traced out affair, led by pounding kicks and psychedelic electronic surges, while on SAMA's "The Beholder" a throbbing groove underpins epic melodic flourishes that have echoes of 90s German trance. A similar, albeit somewhat darker aesthetic is audible on the buzz-saw bass and growling riffs of Joyhauser's "Galaxy Phase". However, this compilation isn't solely inspired by retro sources: The YellowHeads "8 Bits" is a powerful slice of rugged, bass-heavy techno and Martin Lacroix and Oscar Escapa's "Poison" bears the raw, hollowed out drums of bass artists like Martyn.
