Review: Local Talk has always been good at offering up themed compilations showcasing different aspects of the label's output. The latest, as the title suggests, offers up some seriously good nuggets - mostly made in recent times - that draw huge inspiration from house music of the 1990s. There's much to admire throughout the 12 tracks on show, from the undulating TB-303 bass, sparkling piano motifs and glassy-eyed pads of Deymare's '1990' and Gerd's terrific 'Deep Mix' of Mateo & Matos's Masters at Work tribute 'Maw Basics', to the organ-rich roll of Terrence Parker's 'Unconditional' and the breakbeat-driven deep house funkiness of Kiko Navarro's 'Dope High'. Kyodai's 'Breaking (90s Dub)', a mid-90s NYC meets New Jersey style gem, and S3A's breathless 'Sleepness 909', are also superb.

Review: While Local Talk has always tended towards the deeper and more soulful end of the house spectrum, there's no denying the jazz chops of label co-founder Mad Mats and the imprint's penchant for jazzier house workouts. It makes perfect sense, then, that the Swedish DJ/producer would want to showcase that side of Local Talk's output with this tidy trawl through the back catalogue. It naturally contains a wealth of jazz-flecked, floor-friendly gems, with the many highlights including Vick Lavender's near 20-minute, Latin jazz-influenced 'Time Traveller Mix' of his own 'Shifting Gears', a deliciously warm, woozy and sub-heavy tweak of Coflo's 'Lux' courtesy of Kaidi Tatham, Kai Alce's 'St Germain does Detroit deep house' re-vision ofMunk's 'Hot Medusa' and Ron Trent's luscious take on 'Rising' by Kyoto Jazz Sextet.

Walkin - (5:55) 125 BPM
Review: UK label Basic Fingers bring us a pleasingly varied EP from Berlin-based Mancunian producer Sameed Rezayan. The 1.5-minute interlude 'Quarterback' opens the EP in a laidback mood reminiscent of 60s/70s west coast pop, while 'Join The Party' operates in similar musical territory, but then throws us a curveball with a Levan-esque dubbed-out midsection. 'Hornz N That' then heats things up a bit - it's less lounge, more jazz-dance, absolutely dripping in funk and the standout for yours truly - before the EP's completed by 'Walkin', which sounds a bit like DJ Pierre making a house record out of the 'Thriller' bassline in 1987...

Replete - "Legislate" (feat Bini) - (6:42) 116 BPM
Sameed - "Someone Like U" - (6:39) 116 BPM Hot
Review: Sample-based, hip-hop influenced house label Ele returns with a second missive. This time round, there's a quartet of artists at the controls, namely Manchester man Contours, GAMM and Local Talk regular Sameed, and the previously unheard Replete. The latter's "Legislate", a loose, languid, jazz-flecked chunk of sunshine deep house warmth featuring the suave vocals of Bini, is arguably the EP's standout moment - though it is pushed all the way by the crunchy drums, meandering electric piano solos and head-in-the-clouds dustiness of Sameed's "Someone Like U". The breezy, synth-heavy Balearic house breeziness of Contours' "Night Shift" and the drowsy, cut-up house thrust of "Rush", created by a producer who wishes to remain nameless, complete a fine package.

Jonna - "You Make Me Do Things" (feat Lady Blacktronika) - (6:23) 125 BPM
Malouane - "Got Robbed In A Forrest" - (5:22) 119 BPM
Review: For their first foray into the world of the compilation style EP, Secret Crunch has gathered together an impressive cast of little known and fast-rising producers. Local Talk regular Sameed kicks things off with the warm, sugary and luscious, sample-heavy deep house bounce of "Pho", before Kian T impresses via the dreamy deep house grooves and lilting electrofunk synth solos of EP standout "As I". Lady Blaktronika provides some wonderfully evocative vocals on Jonna's rhythmically skewed but effortlessly groovy "You Make Me Do Things", while Malouane wraps ultra-deep chords and barely audible piano samples around a bouncy, jazz break-propelled deep house groove on the excellent "Got Robbed in a Forest".

Testify/Can't U
Jamie 326 & Masalo - "Testify" - (8:16) 122 BPM Hot
Sameed - "Can't U" - (4:42) 123 BPM
Sameed - "Dusty Jazz" - (5:53) 120 BPM
Review: Since first dropping on wax in the autumn, this multi-artist affair has gone on to be one of Local Talk's most popular releases in years. It's easy to see why. Jamie 326 and Masalo's "Testify" is a fabulously urgent concoction - a low-sling, disco-tinged deep house bomb built around a restless rhythm track, impassioned, gospel style vocal snippets, and killer Clavinet lines. Sameed's dustier, sweatier "Can't U" offers a different slant on the same idea, offering a basement-bothering stomper that utilizes many of the same samples. Finally, the same artist delivers something looser in the shape of deep jazz-house jam "Dusty Jazz".

Review: For those who lack the time and willpower to keep track of Local Talk's frenetic release schedule, the popular deep house label's Talking House series is something of a lifesaver. Like its' predecessors, this fourth installment was compiled by label bosses Mad Mats and Tooli, and gathers together 13 more highlights from their rapidly-expanding catalogue. Naturally, highlights come thick and fast, from the hip-hop meets classic deep house flex of Zoe Zoe's "Bust Them Wifes" and the classic Balearic house revivalism of Luke Solomon's "Lost Channels (Live Piano Version)", to the hustling percussion hits and constantly-rising electronics of Kyodai's "Konbanwa" and the delicious jazz-house bounce of Moodymanc's "Morning".

Review: By their standards, Tooli and Mad Mats' Local Talk label has been a bit quiet of late. This, from previously unheard producer Sameed, is something of a surging return to form. "Spend (Money)" kicks things off, lacing cut-up vocals, organs and keys over a booming, off-kilter rhythm that doesn't so much tease you on to the dancefloor as bellow in your face to join the party. The "Money Fo Dub" version of the same track offers an even more booming, fluid take that should be suited to afterhours dancefloors, while the murky, hip-hop influenced "Getyoself" brilliantly flits between sparse broken beat and low-sling tech house. Best of all, though, is "Still", a riotous acid rinse-out with hints of early '90s British techno, and in particular Yorkshire bleep and bass.
