Review: This year saw Berlin clubbing institution Watergate turn 20 years old. To celebrate the milestone, they took the experience outside the club for a full weekend rave, plus the release of this mammoth 20 track compilation of new and unreleased tracks. Highlights come from legendary artists such as the ever reliable Henrik Schwarz who appears with the highly engineered soul of "You Need Attitude", veteran of the scene Sasha gets a seriously heads-down groove happening on "Wolf Cider", Hamburg maximal heroes Extrawelt deliver as expected on the hypnotising "Rover" and former Mobilee co-head Anja Schneider gets the hands in the air on the uplifting house of "Can't You See Me No More?' plus many others.

Review: Sasha brings us collection of tracks that have featured in his Spotify playlist series of the same name, which is oriented towards midtempo, contemplative but still beats-driven cuts spanning breaks, ambient and leftfield electronica. While much is being made of this "new direction", a more cynical observer might say it's the first CD of 'Northern Exposure' plus drums; all the same, there's much to enjoy here if you're in a laidback kinda mood, with standouts including MJ Cole's haunting, fractured 'Maestro' and Cortese's 'Circles' with its air of restrained menace. The album also includes two fresh cuts from The Man Like himself, 'Corner Shop' and recent single 'HDNI'.

Artche - "Split Open" - (7:10) 126 BPM Hot
Sasha - "One Who Knows" - (6:27) 125 BPM
Review: Manchester producer and vocalist Artche makes his way to Sacha's Last Night On Earth label with two originals and the fresh "Siren Chords" collaboration. Next to some solid, rocksteady and trademark Sascha break beats, Laurie Anderson-esque "Oh Superman" vocal expressions add a backing track to the tremolo-effected chorus of Artche lyrics in "Siren Chords". With warping effects and reversed synths pitched alongside the melancholic twist of the track's heavy bassline and trance-centric nature, pure production bliss meets seething nostalgic heat. With booming 808s pumping at full tilt in "Split Open", Artche's vocal here are reminiscent of the aching expressions in Junior Boys hit "Work", while yearning bleeps are furthermore soothed by the crooning tones of Artche's delivery and articulation in "One Who Knows". Mancunian master at work.

Review: This second 20 Years Of Fabric compilation presents a new arranged selection of the defining network of artists that have come to call fabric home. Taking in deep and atmospheric loops from Groove Armada to the light and sprinkled chords of Call Super, the sound of the Farringdon trips through the live and acoustic percussions of Margaret Dygas, the devastating hardcore cuts of Special Request and pure strads of drum and bass by Source Direct and J Magick. More recent tracks include the epic classicalisms of B.Traits acid-flecked "Mameya" to the industrial and dubbed out techno from Marcel Dettmann and Imogen. And not to be overlooked of course are bonafide classics from Unkle, Shackleton, Cassy and Sascha with "Comet Chaser".

Review: Berlin institution Watergate Records celebrates its 10 year birthday, with this special 50 track anthology of their favourite records. Over the last decade, the imprint has set a standard for captivating electronic music from across the house and techno spectrum, successfully mirroring the club's booking policy. Now up to over 60 releases including a remix of the Josh Wink classic "Higher State Of Consciousness" by residents Adana Twins, and the 26th installment in their acclaimed mix series by Danish legends Whomadewho - this compilation presents some of its most memorable cuts since its inception in 2008. Highlights come from: label staple Mathias Meyer - the Hanseatic hero presenting several tracks including "Love Letters From Sicily" with Ryan Davis, local legends Tiefschwarz on "Fire It Out" feat. Ruede Hagelstein, resident La Fleur getting remixed by Detroit legend Kenny Larkin on "Nightflow" and rising duo Adriatique's 7am remix of "The Spirit" by the ever impressive Butch (featuring Hohberg) amony many others.

Ripcord
Ripcord - (8:16) 125 BPM
Review: Following on from his joint release with K?lsch earlier this year, Sasha now flies solo with "Ripcord" on his own label. As one might expect from the master of deep, progressive house, his latest release is a long, drawn-out affair, that starts with a moody, growling bass and stripped back beats. Gradually however, the storied DJ introduces frosty, tranced out synths, otherworldly blips - and what sounds like an airplane landing - all set to driving percussion. As one would expect from the master of seamless, long mixes, it's designed to be played at maximum volume in a dark, sweaty room.

The Lights
The Lights - (6:39) 127 BPM Hot
The Lights (dub) - (6:51) 127 BPM
Review: Following releases with Tiga and Michael Mayer, the latest collaborator with Kolsch on his IPSO label is Sasha, the legendary DJ. In its original format, "The Lights" is a hypnotic slice of tech-house that resounds to shiny synths and atmospheric melodies unfolding over a bouncy groove. It's exactly the type of melodic track that you'd expect to hear in one of the veteran DJ's own sets. There's also a dub version included, which sees the pair bring the solid bass to the fore, but those spine-tingling melodies, a seamless fusion of Germanic iciness and the tripped out aesthetic of UK tech-house, remain at the core of the arrangement.

Review: After almost eight years as a platform for label chief Sasha's own productions, as well as new and established artists: Last Night On Earth is a global success. LNOE 100 honours both the artists and the fans who have made the label an industry leader, with each featured artist selecting others to remix and inspiring new collaborations throughout the compilation. Highlights not limited to: head honcho Sasha's inaugural release "Cut Me Down" reworked by Rekids' Radio Slave into an ethereal epic, Brit electronica hero Max Cooper receives an awesome rendition by the Hotflush affiliated Locked Groove on "Careless" (feat Get People) while ascendant Bristolian Dubspeeka gives his signature moody treatment to Ejeca's "HiRollin". Finally, label newcomer Baile channels the the vibe of legends Boards Of Canada on his mesmerising rework of GHEIST'S "Somerset".

Review: Well isn't this quite the pairing - progressive house legend Sasha teams up with established Berlin DJ La Fleur (Watergate) for an awe-inspiring collaboration on the former's esteemed Last Night On Earth imprint. The result is "Forbindelse" a swing-fuelled and emotive expression in deep house that employs classic and timeless elements all the way for definite dancefloor euphoria. The Berlin based Swede La Fleur then flies solo on the terrific "Rooned" a woozy and hypnotic tech house cut that mixes elements both driving and ethereal to wonderful effect.

Smoke Monk (VONDA7 6am Flight remix) - (6:48) 127 BPM
Review: Last Night On Earth chief Sasha takes control on the label's 93rd edition and displays yet again his talent for atmospheric dance music that is balanced by ethereal tension and suspense on the sublime "Smoke Monk". On the remix is Berlin based up and comer Vonda7, who appeared on the label earlier in 2018 with the Together EP. The 6am Flight remix takes the track into hypnotic and tunnelling territory, fuelled by mentalist 303 acid lines and all-consuming layers of pads above its restrained groove. Following up some terrific releases in recent months by Christoph, Jody Barr and Baile - LNOE continues to deliver the goods.

Singularity (BAILE remix) - (8:53) 124 BPM
Review: It's been over a year since Sasha released new material on Last Night on Earth, so expectations are high for what he will deliver on "Singularity". On the title track, he strips back melodies and removes his love of textured breakdowns to deliver a driving, acid-tinged workout. It only starts to move into the storied UK DJ's epic sensibility after a good four minutes, but even then the break down is more frosty and menacing than usual. It sounds like Sasha has found a kindred spirit in the shape of Baile. The US artist is tasked with reworking "Singularity", and does a fine job, fusing melancholic guitar riffs with the seemingly disparate but in reality cohesive combination of menacing low end and warbling, high end melodies.

Xpander (live at The Barbican) - (10:56) 56 BPM
Review: Earlier this year, Sasha - arguably the original "superstar DJ" - made his live debut at the Barbican, delivering a set to an adoring crowd that blended his recent ambient and soundtrack-inspired work with new interpretations of classic, progressive house-era material. Refracted: Live documents that performance, offering a thoroughly atmospheric trip that gradually moves from chilly, synthesizer-heavy soundscapes and moody downtempo grooves to peak-time dancefloor debauchery. Along the way, there's plenty of impressive musicianship, a pleasing variety of synthesized drum patterns, spine-tingling moments aplenty and a healthy dose of soaring, progressive house style euphoria. Long-term fans will particularly relish the life-affirming re-makes of "Bellfunk" (his 1999 riff on Orbital's "Belfast"), 2002 single "Wavy Gravy" and all-time-classic "Xpander", which fittingly draws the album to a close.

Review: Having made his debut on Kompakt with "Out Of Time" earlier this year, the legendary Sasha now breaks the seal on another prominent German label: Watergate. Flexing his darker technoid muscles, both "Gameovr" and "Trigonometry" are proud late night stampers that twist, weave, spell-bind and hammer in equal measures. The latter is exceptionally spellbinding thanks to its epic 10+ minute weave. Remix-wise we're spoilt rotten as Cassy punctuates "Gameovr" with pile-driving beats and La Fleur refixes our focus on a warmer, housier side to "Trigonometry". Play again?

Review: Having reached its seventeenth volume, the Total series is making its transition from adolescence into adulthood, but it has lost none of its youthful charms. Like previous editions, it features highlights from the German label's recent releases - including anthems from Laurent Garnier and The Orb - alongside some new gems. The latter category sees Thomas/Mayer deliver the tripped out, acid playfulness of "25", while Kompakt regular Superpitcher chimes in with the angelic vocals and skipping groove of "In My Head". Speaking of otherworldly moments, Jurgen Paape's "Always Disko" is a spaced out disco track from another dimension. Trends and fads come and go, but Kompakt will forever remain a constant, defined by its Total series.

Review: More than a few eyebrows were raised when Sasha returned last year with an album of previously unheard ambient and IDM cuts recorded over the course of his lengthy career. Here, that set gets the remix treatment, with a mixture of scene stalwarts and rising stars behind the mixing desk. While there are some gentle dancefloor revisions - see Max Cooper's melodious and atmospheric tech-house interpretation of "Channel Deq" and Matthew Dear's hypnotic, late night take on "Pontiac" - many of the most rewarding and entertaining remixes are those that take a more horizontal approach. In this category, you'll find Sasha's own rising, near symphonic version of "Pontiac" and a stunning, standout mix of "Abacus" by Warp Records veterans Plaid.

Review: Progressive house don Sasha on Kompakt you say? You'd better believe it! The man known to his Mam as Christopher Coe serves up a deep and slinky tech house cut for the early evening or afterhours alike on "Out Of Time" featuring Minneapolis' Polica on vocals; providing the track with that bit more ethereal edge. There's a handy instrumental and radio edit, but lets not forget Amsterdam's Patrice Baumel on the remix which is geared for just as many, if not more life affirming moments on the dancefloor with his powerful and evocative rendition.

Scene Delete: Remixes #2
Channel Deq (Max Cooper remix) - (6:59) 122 BPM
Pontiac (Matthew Dear vs Audion remix) - (6:10) 126 BPM Hot
Review: Sasha went downbeat for his edition of the acclaimed chill out mix CD series Late Night Tales. Said to be influenced by the likes of Max Richter, Nils Frahm and Steve Reich, the release in its entirety was compiled with original recordings by Christopher Coe, said to be written as side projects to his em_fire and Last Night On Earth record labels where house and techno reign supreme. Two of the cuts appear here on Scene Delete Remixes 2, which follow up some great renditions by Kiasmos and Rival Consoles. Here the inimitable Max Cooper works his magic on "Channel Deq", creating a slow burning and brooding version with subtle dancefloor dynamics. On "Pontiac" it's over to the legendary Matthew Dear who faces off with his notorious Audion alias for a wonky and tripped out dancefloor menace that's just made for wiggin' out.

Review: Dance music legend extraordinaire Sasha returns on his own esteemed Last Night On Earth imprint with a hot new track entitled "Rivaldo", a slinky and hypnotic tech house journey with liquid elements and looped vocals supported by a subtle rhythm arrangement: it works really well! Who better to get a remix from than Lebanon's reigning queen of techno Nicole Moudaber, who delivers a whopper rendition that's tunnelling, hypnotic and noisy: perfect to get some hysterical moments on the main room dancefloor. Following up great releases by Marc Romboy and Rufus, this label is totally on fire at the moment!

Scene Delete: Remixes #1
Vapour Trails (Kiasmos remix) - (6:14) 61 BPM Hot
Cassette Sessions E (Rival Consoles remix) - (5:39) 61 BPM
Review: While some associate Sasha's work to the late 90s and mid-00s, the veteran UK producer has never left. He's always been right here, at the centre of Europe's house scene. His recent LP for Late Night Tales, the glorious Scene Delete, is now under a process of remixing, and this comes as no surprise; why not reshape those dance floor tracks into something different, even more visceral. "Vapour Trails" is versioned by Kiasmos, and the result is a deep, harmonic house tune with a vast landscape of sounds at its core; Rival Consoles reshapes "Cassette Session E" by stretching the arrangement out to its very limits, and what we're faced with is a long and subtly-developing progressive house monster with a minimal edge. Excellent.

Review: On Scene Delete, Sasha has decided to flip the script, jettisoning his usual progressive-leaning club fare in favour of original productions that wallow in their largely beatless, ambient nature. In some ways, it's a surprise move, but in others, it makes perfect sense; his DJ and production style has always emphasized atmosphere and texture, making it perfectly suited for the ambient genre. Musically, Scene Delete has some genuinely superb moments, with the obvious Eno, Yokota, Namlook and Reich influences joined by nods to obscure new age records, early synthesizer pioneers and, on a couple of occasions, the glitchy IDM of Autechre.

Ether (Intro mix) - (4:06) 125 BPM
Review: UK progressive house legend Sasha returns from the depths of the underground with a stunning new two-tracker for Last Night On Earth. The original mix of "Ether" is a classic Sasha head-spinner boasting a bumping bassline and some killer atmospherics for total dancefloor domination, while the intro mix deeper, more spaced-out and almost free of any kick. They're both prime and ready for any DJ set, on any floor. Warmly recommended.
