Review: Clearly inspired by US house and techno, Irish pair Schmutz drop a fine dance floor EP. "Leipzig Push", with its shuffling drums, booming bass and outer-spaces tones, sounds inspired by the like of Shake and Theo Parrish. On "Underwater Yoga", the bass is to the fore again, with a menacing low end supporting UR-style melodies and a series of epic break downs. Meanwhile, "Sweep" is more ominous as Schmutz combine a menacing low end with frosty synth shards. The label has tapped Bryan Kessler to remix "Yoga", and the German artist drops a stripped back, drum-heavy take that's tailored for long mixes.

Review: Despite having a Teutonic-sounding name, Schmutz is actually a production act from Belfast with releases on Dirt Crew and 4 Lux. No Reason is their third release and offers up more expertly executed house and techno jams. "Two Seconds" is a tough, rolling house groove, its drums robust and steely, but it never strays into a faceless linear cul de sac. "No Reason" is in a similar vein; the key difference this time is that the pair uses repetitive vocal samples and heavy filters. "Spides" is harder and faster and despite being underpinned by tough kicks, it does not lapse into banging senselessness.

Review: Hailing from Belfast, it sounds like Schmutz is a new production force to be reckoned with. Indeed, this release on Dirt Crew sees them take influence from a range of styles without sounding derivative. The title track is a drum-heavy techno workout, with waves of droning sound unfolding over relentless, pummelling drums. "The Charge" sees them take influence from Technasia and the leaner end of Steve Rachmad's catalogue as dramatic chords and strings surge over a driving rhythm. "Sherara" focuses on the same territory, albeit with an acid-tinged hue, while "DDLF" has an old school feeling, its rhythm peppered with rave-era vocal samples.

Review: Many happy returns to Germany's Dirt Crew Recordings imprint, which this year celebrates a decade of deep and tech-house releases. For this celebratory collection, they've decided to take a slightly different approach, eschewing label classics and forgotten gems in favour of new cuts from familiar and lesser-known artists. There's naturally much to admire, from the heavy, Soundstream-do-deep house loopiness of Yosa's "Love Me" and the surging deep house funk of Timothy Blake's "The Town is Quiet", to the woozy, Ame-ish rush of Matt Masters' "6&3 Twos". Tigerskin does his bit for the label's old guard with "Ad Lib Robot", a bouncy, soul-flecked acid jam that's one of the compilation's genuine highlights.

Review: Belfast's Kristian Conor may be a relative newcomer, but this debut EP for Gerd's 4Lux Black imprint bristles with confidence. His style - bold, bassy and jacking, with a decent amount of analogue dustiness to the production - is engaging and floor-friendly, with little kowtowing to contemporary trends. The three tracks here variously reference vintage dub house (the pleasingly becalmed and hypnotic "Shu"), early '90s bleep and Chicago jack tracks ("Lima"), and early Belgian techno and late night deep house (the heavyweight "Slaned"). All are excellent, and suggest that Conor could be a producer to watch in 2014.
