Review: Foliage Records presents the next version of their compilation series Deep Rooted via Bristol legend Sean McCabe! This eighth edition unearths some fresh gems from trusted stalwarts like Atjazz and Jimpster, with Sean McCabe himself throwing down twice with Karmasound in "A New Day" alongside others like Harold Mathew's Jr in a extended vocal mix of "This Place" to something else with Turbojazz and Monica Blaire in "Don't Look Down". Full of pure house vibes, McCabe takes on Taliwa in a remix of "Music For My Sun", while other stand out numbers include Blaze's deep and stuttering "Celestine Prophecy" and Black Sonix's percussive "Afrotone". Review: Local Talk's celebration of the '90s house-inspired corners of its now vast catalogue continues, with the much admired Swedish stable serving up 12 tidy tracks from a mixture of rising stars and scene stalwarts. Review: Madeeha Mubarak is a British Asian singer from Manchester who mostly performs devotional/sacred music in a healing and wellness context. 'Still Standing Here', though, was a vocal idea she sent one night as a phone message to Bristol D&B producer DJ Mixjah, who swiftly roped in one of the city's top soulful house specialists, Sean McCabe. The result is a track that's supplied in bruk beat Original and soulful/Afro house Sean McCabe Remix forms (both with matching instrumentals), and that has a beautifully fragile, haunting quality - largely thanks to the trio opting to ditch the resung "studio" version of the vocal and just use the original voice message instead.

Review: As the title suggests, this fantastic - and let's face it, pleasingly epic - compilation showcases some of the many disco-centric cuts in the Z Records vaults, throwing in a few exclusives (see Dave Lee's fantastic, hybrid disco-boogie rework of Firefly's 'Love is Gonna Be on Your Side') for good measure. Such is the high-quality threshold that picking stand outs is tough, but our picks of a very strong bunch include the slick, boogie-funk brilliance of Crackazat's 'Sensationalized', Larry Levan's vintage, delay-heavy synth dub of Johnny Dynell's 'Rhythm of Love', the stomping disco-house release of 'Gotta Thing (2021 Remaster)' by Foreal People, Taana Gardner and Dave Lee, and John Morales' epic rework of Sean McCabe's 'Love For Life'. As the old saying goes, this is all killer and no filler.

Review: Back in 2016, Crackazat launched the Period Works series as a vehicle for productions that explicitly paid tribute to his influences and inspirations, and in particular his love of glossy, musically rich 1990s US house and garage. Four years on, he's decided to gather together the tracks released so far in one place, adding a trio of previously unheard creations and a couple of bonus remixes to create Period Works - The Album. Highlights are plentiful, from the authentic 1970s disco rush of superb opener 'Waterfalls' and the classic Masters at Work shuffle of 'Fire Drift', to the 'Brazilian Rhyme'-goes-piano house rush of 'Fly Away' and the big room US garage bounce of 'I'll Be There'. The included squelchy, synth-laden rework of Sean McCabe's 'Holding On' is also superb.

Review: Remarkably, three decades have now passed since Dave Lee AKA Joey Nergo inaugurated his label, Z Records. To mark the occasion, Lee has compiled this suitably epic, 44-track retrospective. There are plenty of big tunes and underground anthems present- see Jakatta's "American Dream", Raven Maize's "The Real Life", The Sunburst Band's "Everyday" and Doug Willis's "Spread Love" - as well as some of the veteran DJ/producer's favourite catalogue cuts and some slept-on gems. Throw in a string of memorable remixes - think Ame's remix of Akabu's "Phuture Bound", Grant Nelson's vintage rub of Z Factor's "Gotta Keep Pushin" and Joey Negro's revision of Patrice Rushen disco classic "Haven't You Heard" - and you've got a brilliant retrospective of one of house and disco's most consistent labels. Review: Is there a more on-form label right now than Boogie Cafe The Bristol-based imprint is certainly in a rich vein of form, as this second compilation of previously unheard treats proves. In fact, it's such a fabulous collection of cuts that singling out just a few tracks for praise is particularly tough. Even so, our current favourites include the slinky, synth-laden deep house/jazz-funk fusion of BRS's "Get In There", the drowsy downtempo hip-hop beats of Chezz's "Yeah Baby", the late '80s New Jersey garage revivalism of Goshawk's "Got You All Night", the Seiji style broken beat business that is Lord Leopard's "Magic Hands" and the Latin-fired disco-house bump of J Morrison's "Mullet Frenzy".

Review: Should you happen to need a 27-minute snapshot of where house music is "at" in August 2019, this V/A offering from Jovonn's Body N Deep label would be a fine place to start. Franck Roger marries tuff, techy beats to soulful female vocal samples on 'Get Ready', Sean McCabe brings crisp beats, jazzy Hammonds and a killer 90s-style M1 line on the strutty 'Freak It', Delano Smith's 'Moon Dance' has a more traditional soulful house feel (and owes a big debt to Akabu classic 'Ride The Storm') and finally Monocue gets techy, tribal and a little bit Afro on 'Borrowed Days'. Classy stuff all round.

Review: Boogie Cafe is a joint venture between DJs and producers Jimmy The Twin and Alex. Here they present three cuts of lush house music from Bristol's own Sean McCabe. Originally from Scotland, he heads up the Good Vibrations imprint, so those that are in the know certainly can expect some deep, soulful and uplifting vibes from the man here. Opening cut "Way Back" channels a familiar spirit, whether it's that of legends of 2000 Black or NDATL it's good either way. It's life affirming house music we know that much. On to the flipside, where the emotive late night mood lighting of "Star Night" will captivate with with its soothing Mr Fingers style house organs and chill beats. Finally, there's some variety on "Rising High" again channelling the early noughties nu-jazz broken beat of Bugz In The Attic et al.

Review: Mad Mats and Tooli have decided to celebrate five and a half years of their much-loved Local Talk label by gathering together a swathe of fresh cuts that best represent the label's eclectic approach to house music. It's a fine set, moving from the electric bass driven jazz-house of Art Of Tones' "Violation" to the UK garage influenced deep house skip of Hugo LX, via the rich, soulful house warmth of Sean McCabe, the synth-laden Herbie Hancock-isms of DJ Spinna and the celebratory disco-house heaviness of S3A's "Bob Morton". Chuck in superb contributions from Bodhi Satva, Simbad (as SMBD) and newcomer Marcel Lune, and you have a near essential collection of feel-good house moments.

Review: Hailing from Wales, but Bristol-based and with his heart even further afield, Sean McCabe is a strong UK presence on the international soulful house circuit thanks to album, It's Time. "Everything's Alright" was on that LP and it now gets a variety of remix treatments; Art Of Tones opts for breezy, melodic production, complete with New York organ riffs and hints of gospel. Elsewhere McCabe delivers his own dub version which is much more clubbier and boasts a slight speed garage edge. Also included is the ponderous "Love For Life" which is presented in two deeper forms by John Morales.

Review: Six years on from launching the It's A Summer Groove series, Joey Negro returns with a fifth selection of sunshine-friendly tracks from the Z Records vaults. While much of the label's output - soulful, accessible, funky and heavily influenced by disco, funk and boogie - could be described as "summery", there's something particularly bright and breezy about the 21 tracks gathered together here. Highlights are naturally plentiful, from the smooth disco-soul goodness of the Reflex's recent remix of the Sunburst Band's "The Secret Life of Us", and the terrace-friendly piano house of Shur-I-Kan's rework of Zo & Erro & Phonte, to the vibraphone-laden boogie-house goodness of Rainbow Connection and Taka Boom's "Surrender".

Review: "Reach Out", a swinging, shuffling, bruk-influenced soulful house gem featuring the sumptuous vocals of Hannah Khemoh, is the latest single to be taken from Bristol-based Welshman Sean McCabe's excellent debut album, It's Time. Alongside McCabe's extended version, there's a headline rework from Atjazz and an all-new edit from the original producer. The Atjazz version will get most of the attention, featuring as it does the perfect blend of European style tech-house chords, insatiable vocal loops and percussion that's suitably sturdy whilst retaining an element of swing. McCabe's Paradise Edit is excellent, too, with key vocal phrases being paired with melodious keys, dreamy chords and beats that shuffle majestically.

Review: Two expert slabs of soulful house right here. They come courtesy of Bristol-based Sean McCabe, but by the sound of these you could swear he's NYC born and bred. "Something About You" oozes authenticity; the delicate organ-powered chord progression, the wriggling live bassline and Rogers-style guitar washes make the perfect framework for Wallace's stunning vocal presence. "Holding On" is a dubbier affair with a mammoth synth that laps and bobs with dynamism before we're dropped into a sumptuous bed of piano vibrancy. Perfect.
