Feel The Need
On The Way To Memphis - (3:55) 96 BPM
Review: Cal Gibson AKA Secret Soul Society returns to French label Citizens Of Vice with four new cuts that throw a proper melange of styles into the blender. 'On The Way To Memphis' is a squelchy, midtempo affair with a soul/blues-style vocal about "leaving Georgia" and being "halfway to Hollywood", yet curiously also has something of an 80s pop feel. 'Ruby Blues' is a dense, shuffling number that bites the vocal from Reuben Wilson's 'Got To Get Your Own' from 1975 and 'Feel The Need' is a sweeping, dramatic slab of synth-disco, while finally 'Whole Wide World' brings the full-on indie-pop vibes.

Who Is The Don - (4:18) 90 BPM Hot
Review: Cal Gibson, a Nottingham-raised veteran producer best-known for his role in early noughties outfit Neon Heights, has had a new lease of life since re-emerging as Secret Soul Society. He has a decidedly Balearic album on the way for Hell Yeah! Recordings, but first there's the matter of this four-tracker for Rayko's Rare Wiri imprint. Gibson begins in predictably loved-up mood via the wide-eyed, sample-heavy tactility of 'Its Magic', an acid-splashed cut of the sort that fellow Notts boy Naill used to offer up, before successfully cutting up and dubbing out some heady Philly Soul on the druggy flex of 'Mighty Fine'. 'Minding The Seasons' is an attractive Balearic nu-disco throb-job, while 'Who Is The Don' is a spaced-out slow jam that makes great use of samples from a swamp funk treat.

Secret Soul Society - "Draw Of The Cards" - (4:46) 93 BPM
Review: Born back in 2008, Rayko's Rare Wiri mark their 200th release with an album-length compilation featuring 12 brand new cuts from what the man himself describes simply as "some of my favourite artists out there". The album starts out in laidback, Balearic mode with Secret Soul Society's 'Draw Of The Cards' and ends up back there with Manolo's 'By The Moon', but in-between you'll find the looping, funked-up deep house of Fran Deeper's 'Lost Baby', the shape-throwing 80s Faltermeyer-isms of Kelton Prima's 'The Beggining', Ilya Santana's floor-friendly cover of Vangelis's 'Dervish D', the electro nouveau of From Beyond's 'Star Slip' and more besides. Here's to 200 more!

Oh Laura
Driftin - (4:38) 99 BPM Hot
Review: Citizens Of Vice bring us a new three-track, four-mix EP from Secret Soul Society, a loose collective headed up by deep house and Balearic stalwart Cal Gibson, AKA Neon Heights. The EP opens with the uber-drifty Original Mix of 'Take A Chance On Love', which is all slo-mo drums, layered atmospherics and haunting female vocal snip. That's followed (somethat ironically) by 'Driftin', a midtempo number with a soulful female vocal; then we get a more obvious call to dance in the form of the fat-bottomed, boogie-vocalled 'For You & Me', before the Italo-flavoured Popsneon Oh Laura Remix of 'Take A Chance...' completes the EP.

FF Edits - "Do For Love" - (5:34) 94 BPM
Review: A definite case of wearing your heart on your sleeve here, as Discoholics Anonymous serve up an eight-track collection of tracks built for when you and that special someone are (ahem) getting better acquainted. Some of the tracks here are straight-up re-edits - Gwen McCrae's "Let's Straighten It Out" becomes Lup Ino's "Tossing And Turning", while Billy Paul's "Let's Make A Baby" is reworked by The Found Sound Orchestra and FF Edits revisit a much-loved Bobby Caldwell classic. Others are seemingly original productions, while stylistically the album ranges from scratchy leftfield hip-hop to mellow Balearica to smooth soul... but as a set, it should serve its purpose perfectly.
